Take the 40 day challenge and develop your ability to make choices that will change the course of your life forever. Confessions for the Narrow Road is a 40 day devotional focusing on the power of the choices we make, set against the backdrop of nature photography taken by the author, Loretta Fralin-Rapp. The book includes a study guide to give you a deeper look at yourself and your choices. This 3D devotional includes a link to video journals recorded by the author where she talks about how these confessions have impacted her own life. You can find the videos on YouTube under Loretta Fralin-Rapp. Confessions for the Narrow Road was birthed out of a very challenging and dark time in Loretta's life. Suffering from bipolar disorder, she had a manic episode while she was with her daughter and put her in danger. It was at that point that she lost custody of her daughter. While she entered an empty place, she met God through reading the Bible and learned how to make confessions based on what she was reading. It is from this place that she wrote Confessions for the Narrow Road. It is her hope that it challenges how you approach the Bible and think about your own choices. You can learn more about offerings by Loretta Fralin-Rapp at https://www.confessionsandbeyond.com/ including a free, live, online book study, which will start on August 8th at 9 am

Book excerpt: A powerful novel about trauma and forgiveness Winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction Finalist for the PEN Translation Prize Finalist for the USA Translation Award During the violence and chaos of the Lebanese Civil War, a car pulls up to a roadblock on a narrow side street in Beirut. After a brief and confused exchange, several rounds of bullets are fired into the car, killing everyone inside except for a small boy of four or five. The boy is taken to the hospital, adopted by one of the assassins, and raised in a new family. “My father used to kidnap and kill people …” begins this haunting tale of a child who was raised by the murderer of his real family. The narrator of Confessions doesn’t shy away from the horrible truth of his murderous father—instead he confronts his troubled upbringing and seeks to understand the distortions and complexities of his memories, his war-torn country, and the quiet war that rages inside of him.

Book excerpt: Andrew Farley's experience as a Christian was first characterized by self-effort as he tried to please God at any cost. His ruthless religion resulted in spiritual burnout and disillusionment with church. Only then did he discover what relaxing in Jesus means and how enjoying God's intimate presence can transform everyday life. Using a unique story-driven format, God without Religion dismantles common religious misconceptions, revealing the true meaning of being filled with the Spirit the facts about judgment, rewards, and God's discipline the simple truth behind predestination and the divisions it causes the problem with the popular challenge to "live radical" Pulling no punches, Farley shows how the truth about these controversial issues can liberate and unify believers as we discover how to rest in the unconditional love of God.

In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Roger de la Burde was an unusual and charming man—a wealthy scientist and art collector, he claimed to be a Polish Count, wore ascots, and always bowed to women. But after he was found dead in the library of his Virginia estate, police discovered that de la Burde was not the man he had pretended to be. In fact, he was such a womanizing swindler that they had no difficulty compiling a list of suspects, including the tobacco company he was suing, his disgruntled business associates, his longtime girlfriend, his pregnant mistress, and her husband. The woman they ultimately charged with the crime seemed the least likely of them all to commit murder; Beverly Monroe was an educated and unfailingly genteel Southern mother of three who had never had so much as parking ticket. But she had been de la Burde’s lover for twelve years (despite his frequent affairs) and she made a bizarre confession under intense police questioning. Was she really guilty, or was she manipulated by the police? With unimpeachable research, Taylor reveals the multiple layers of this fascinating case and leaves readers with troubling doubts about de la Burde, about Monroe, and about the justice system in America.

Book excerpt: Fourteen Presbyterian scholars enter into conversations with the confessions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and examine the major theological themes that make the confessions such foundational commitments of faith. This collection of insightful essays provides readers with a clear understanding of the confessions from different periods of the church's life. These conversations with the confessions found in the PC(USA)'s Book of Confessions include some illuminating commentary on why they were written and demonstrate how they can be used to address major theological issues. This important work will help scholars, pastors, and church leaders interested in studying the Reformed tradition appreciate the role of the confessions in shaping Christian life and faith today.

Book excerpt: A monk’s journey of amends leads to murder in this “thoroughly entertaining medieval mystery” in the Silver Dagger Award–winning series (Publishers Weekly). Winter arrived early in 1142, bringing with it a heavy snowfall. The safety of the guest-hall roof at the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul comes into jeopardy, and the brothers are called upon to effect repairs. But the icy and treacherous conditions are to prove near fatal for Brother Haluin. He slips from the roof and crashes to the ground, sustaining terrible injuries—grave enough for him to want to make his deathbed confession. The confession is heard by the abbot and Brother Cadfael; a wicked story, of trespasses hard for God or man to forgive. But Haluin does not die. On his recovery, he determines to make a journey of expiation, with Cadfael as his sole companion. It is an arduous journey, physically and emotionally, and one that leads to some shocking discoveries.

Book excerpt: In 'The Spiritual Works of Leo Tolstoy', readers are invited to explore the profound insights of one of the greatest Russian writers and thinkers of all time. This collection includes 'A Confession', 'The Kingdom of God is Within You', 'What I Believe', 'Christianity and Patriotism', 'Reason and Religion', and 'The Gospel in Brief', among others. Tolstoy's literary style is characterized by a sincere and contemplative approach to spiritual and philosophical questions, making this compilation a rich and thought-provoking read. The timeless themes of morality, faith, and the search for meaning in life are central to Tolstoy's writings, providing readers with a window into the author's innermost thoughts and beliefs. Leo Tolstoy, a prominent figure in Russian literature, was deeply influenced by his own spiritual journey and philosophical inquiries. His works often reflect his personal struggles with faith and his evolving views on religion, morality, and society. Tolstoy's commitment to social justice and his critique of institutionalized religion are evident throughout this collection, showcasing his reputation as a moral and intellectual leader of his time. I recommend 'The Spiritual Works of Leo Tolstoy' to readers interested in exploring the intersection of literature, philosophy, and spirituality. This compilation offers a unique opportunity to engage with Tolstoy's profound reflections on life's fundamental questions, making it a valuable addition to any scholar's library.
