Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gower Selections From the Confessio Amantis In the present editor's complete edition of the Confessio Amantis some modifications have been admitted for the convenience of modern readers, but in the present text the student will find some five or six thousand lines of this very excellent manuscript exactly reproduced, and the editor hopes that this may be regarded as a matter of some general interest. The text of this book, it may be added, is the result of a quite independent collation of the manuscript, and a few very trifling errors (chiefly cases of 'y' for 'i'), which had escaped notice in the larger edition, have been discovered and corrected here. In the Introduction some account is given of the author and of his literary work, and a short summary of the Confessio Amantis is added. The account of the language and metre is founded upon that which is given in the larger edition, but with much abridgement. The Notes of this book, on the other hand, are considerably more extensive than those of the complete edition, being intended for younger students. The Glossary, it is hoped, will supply all that is necessary in addition for the full understanding of the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing the Confessio Amantis, John Gower pioneered the use of English as a literary language. Commissioned by King Richard II, it is a compendium of stories held together by a frame narrative in which they serve as examples given to a lover by his confessor. In this volume, which is based on Pauli's 1857 edition, H. S. Bennett has selected some of the most enjoyable passages from the Confessio Amantis. They serve together as an illuminating sample of one of the earliest and most important books in the canon of English literature.

Download or read book The French Balades written by John Gower and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gower's imaginative French poetry is now available in a new edition with facing page translation, annotations, and introduction. Gower's Traitie employs the French poetic form of balade, typically used for courtly verses, to avow instead the virtues of loving marriage, characteristic of Gower's signature moralizing. His Cinkante Balades confront the tradition of the French Livre de Cent Balades, by describing the feelings of a young man towards his lady, but eventually offering a praise of love insofar as it is subject to reason and morality. Together the two works offer an excellent introduction to the Anglo-Norman works of Gower and are perfect for classroom use.

Book Synopsis English Poets in the Late Middle Ages by : John A. Burrow
Download or read book English Poets in the Late Middle Ages written by John A. Burrow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of lectures and essays in which J.A. Burrow discusses the work of English poets of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries: Chaucer, Gower, Langland, and Hoccleve, as well as the anonymous authors of Pearl, Saint Erkenwald, and a pair of metrical romances. Six of the pieces address general issues, with some reference to French and Italian writings ('Autobiographical Poetry in the Middle Ages', for example, or 'The Poet and the Book'); but most of them concentrate on particular English poems, such as Chaucer's Envoy to Scogan, Gower's Confessio Amantis, Langland's Piers Plowman, and Hoccleve's Series. Although some of the essays take account of the poet's life and times ('Chaucer as Petitioner', 'Hoccleve and the 'Court''), most are mainly concerned with the meaning and structure of the poems. What, for example, does the hero of Ipomadon hope to achieve by fighting, as he always does, incognito? Why do the stories in Piers Plowman all peter out so inconclusively? And how can it be that the narrator in Chaucer's Book of the Duchess so persistently fails to understand what he is told?
Book Synopsis The Siege of Thebes by : John Lydgate
Download or read book The Siege of Thebes written by John Lydgate and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lydgate's The Siege of Thebes, written c. 1421-22, is the only Middle English poetic text that recounts the fratricidal struggle between Oedipus's sons Eteocles and Polynices as they contend for the lordship of Thebes. The text reflects the problem of poetic authority and the political and ethical themes of Lydgate's poetic career in the 1420s, when he was writing as a Lancastrian propagandist and as unofficial royal poet.
