Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mississippi joined South Carolina in rebellion when it voted to secede on January 9, 1861, making it the second state to leave the Union. The state provided numerous political and military leaders to the Confederacy, including President Jefferson Davis and Generals Earl Van Dorn, James Ronald Chalmers, Wirt Adams, Robert Lowery, S. G. French, and Benjamin Grubb Humphreys among others. Forty-nine infantry regiments, seven cavalry regiments, and twenty batteries of artillery saw service in all theaters of the war. Its geography, especially Vicksburg and Port Gibson, helped maintain contact with the Confederate Trans-Mississippi and prevented the Union from controlling the length of the Mississippi River until the middle of 1863. Several major battles and campaigns were fought in Mississippi, including Corinth, Iuka, Tupelo, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, and Vicksburg. The author, Charles E. Hooker, began the war as a lieutenant in the artillery and rose to the rank of Colonel. Individual chapters cover the state's secession and organization of troops; early duty outside the state, primarily at Pensacola and First Manassas; battles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri; the blockade of the Mississippi River; the battles of Iuka, Chickasaw Bluffs, and Van Dorn's operations; the Vicksburg siege; the battles of Knoxville, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and Missionary Ridge; the Meridian Expedition, the destruction of Meridian, and the Battle of Tishomingo Creek; and the surrender of Mississippi troops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first Union attack on Vicksburg in the spring of 1862 through Benjamin Grierson's last raid through Mississippi in late 1864 and early 1865, this book traces the campaigns, fighting, and causes and effects of armed conflict in central and North Mississippi, where major campaigns were waged and fighting occurred. The Civil War in Mississippi: Major Campaigns and Battles will be a must-read for any Mississippian or Civil War buff who wants the complete story of the Civil War in Mississippi. It discusses the key military engagements in chronological order. It begins with a prologue covering mobilization and other events leading up to the first military action within the state's borders. The book then covers all of the major military operations, including the campaign for and siege of Vicksburg, and battles at Iuka and Corinth, Meridian, Brice's Crossroads, and Tupelo. The colorful cast of characters includes such household names as Sherman, Grant, Pemberton, and Forrest, as well as a host of other commanders and soldiers. Author Michael B. Ballard discusses at length minority troops and others glossed over or lost in studies of the Mississippi military during the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one volume in a library of Confederate States history, in twelve volumes, written by distinguished men of the South, and edited by Gen. Clement A. Evans of Georgia. A generation after the Civil War, the Southern protagonists wanted to tell their story, and in 1899 these twelve volumes appeared under the imprint of the Confederate Publishing Company. The first and last volumes comprise such subjects as the justification of the Southern States in seceding from the Union and the honorable conduct of the war by the Confederate States government; the history of the actions and concessions of the South in the formation of the Union and its policy in securing the territorial dominion of the United States; the civil history of the Confederate States; Confederate naval history; the morale of the armies; the South since the war, and a connected outline of events from the beginning of the struggle to its close. The other ten volumes each treat a separate State with details concerning its peculiar story, its own devotion, its heroes, and its battlefields. Volume 7 is Alabama and Mississippi.

Book excerpt: This work spanning twelve extensive volumes is the result of contributions by many Southern men to the literature of the United States that treats of the eventful years in which occurred the momentous struggle called by Mr. A. H. Stephens "the war between the States." These contributions were made on a well-considered plan, to be wrought out by able writers of unquestionable Confederate record who were thoroughly united in general sentiment and whose generous labors upon separate topics would, when combined, constitute a library of Confederate military history and biography. According to the great principle in the government of the United States that one may result from and be composed of many — the doctrine of E pluribus unum--it was considered that intelligent men from all parts of the South would so write upon the subjects committed to them as to produce a harmonious work which would truly portray the times and issues of the Confederacy and by illustration in various forms describe the soldiery which fought its battles. Upon this plan two volumes — the first and the last-comprise such subjects as the justification of the Southern States in seceding from the Union and the honorable conduct of the war by the Confederate States government; the history of the actions and concessions of the South in the formation of the Union and its policy in securing the existing magnificent territorial dominion of the United States; the civil history of the Confederate States, supplemented with sketches of the President, Vice-President, cabinet officers and other officials of the government; Confederate naval history; the morale of the armies; the South since the war, and a connected outline of events from the beginning of the struggle to its close. The two volumes containing these general subjects are sustained by the other volumes of Confederate military history of the States of the South involved in the war. Each State being treated in separate history permits of details concerning its peculiar story, its own devotion, its heroes and its battlefields. The authors of the State histories, like those of the volumes of general topics, are men of unchallenged devotion to the Confederate cause and of recognized fitness to perform the task assigned them. It is just to say that this work has been done in hours taken from busy professional life, and it should be further commemorated that devotion to the South and its heroic memories has been their chief incentive. This is volume eleven out of twelve, covering the Civil War in Missouri.
