Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century, Conestoga wagons were seen on many major roads, such as the National Road, hauling freight to and from cities. Many of the eighteenth century wagons were even used to haul freight to George Washington's troops at Valley Forge. These heavy two ton wagons were pulled by six "Conestoga" draft horses and driven by teamsters. Teamsters were usually farmers who were hired to deliver and transport goods, such as tobacco, plows, tools, and dry goods. These men were very skilled at driving their horses. By using a jerk line, they were able to control their six horses with only one line and one "jerk" on the lead horse's bit. Conestoga wagons were made by three craftsmen, which consisted of the blacksmith, the wainwright, and the wheelwright. The blacksmith made the iron work, the wainwright made the wagon bed, and the wheelwright made the wheels. Throughout America's history, the Conestoga wagon was one of the most necessary modes of transportation for goods and freight.

Book excerpt: The Conestoga wagon was instrumental in the transportation of goods and people for both consumer and military purposes. Originating in England, early Pennsylvania craftsmen perfected the vehicle's design for use in the colonies, especially the roads of Pennsylvania. German craftsmen in Lancaster and Berks Counties were best known for their wagons, and soon they were traversing the Keystone State, hauling farm goods and supplies between towns and markets. Of course, these wagons then play a key role in the westward migration.
