Book Synopsis Animal Tales from the Caribbean by : George List
Download or read book Animal Tales from the Caribbean written by George List and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional stories from the northern Colombian coast, in both English and Spanish. These twenty-one animal tales from the Colombian Caribbean coast represent a sampling of the traditional stories that are told during all-night funerary wakes. The tales are told in the semi-sacred space of the patio (backyard) of homes as part of the funerary ritual that includes other aesthetic and expressive practices such as jokes, song games, board games, and prayer. In this volume these stories are situated within their performance contexts and represent a highly ritualized corpus of oral knowledge that for centuries has been preserved and cultivated by African-descendant populations in the Americas. Ethnomusicologist George List collected these tales throughout his decades-long fieldwork among the rural costeños, a chiefly African-descendent population, in the mid-twentieth century and, with the help of a research team, transcribed and translated them into English before his death in 2008. In this volume, John Holmes McDowell and Juan Sebastián Rojas E. have worked to bring this previously unpublished manuscript to light, providing commentary on the transcriptions and translations, additional cultural context through a new introduction, and further typological and cultural analysis by Hasan M. El-Shamy. Supplementing the transcribed and translated texts are links to the original Spanish recordings of the stories, allowing readers to follow along and experience the traditional telling of the tales for themselves.

Book Synopsis Orchids of Venezuela by : Karen Sturges-Vera
Download or read book Orchids of Venezuela written by Karen Sturges-Vera and published by Virtualbookworm Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 27, 1992, Tamara Mata is jolted awake to the news that rebel forces are attacking the president of Venezuela and bombing the airport in the second coup attempt of the year. Recoiling from the turmoil facing her country, she seeks reassurance and stability in her past. In her thoughts, she retraces her life, from her childhood in Merida to her youth in Caracas, her university years in Dallas, Texas, and her return to Caracas as an adult. Tamara relives the emotions that filled her when she became a wife and later a mother. Over the years, she has witnessed both dictatorship and democracy in Venezuela and she has experienced both disillusionment and hope. Her memories reveal her changing relationships with her family, her friends, her society, and ultimately with herself. These reflections highlight two different ways to view an orchid: as a seemingly delicate yet resilient flower, and as a beautiful yet parasitic plant.

Download or read book The Tar Baby written by Bryan Wagner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the best-known version of the tar baby story was published in 1880 by Joel Chandler Harris in Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, and popularized in Song of the South, the 1946 Disney movie. Other versions of the story, however, have surfaced in many other places throughout the world, including Nigeria, Brazil, Corsica, Jamaica, India, and the Philippines. The Tar Baby offers a fresh analysis of this deceptively simple story about a fox, a rabbit, and a doll made of tar and turpentine, tracing its history and its connections to slavery, colonialism, and global trade.

Download or read book Crude Nation written by Raul Gallegos and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath Venezuelan soil lies an ocean of crude--the world's largest reserves--an oil patch that shaped the nature of the global energy business. Unfortunately, a dysfunctional anti-American, leftist government controls this vast resource and has used its wealth to foster voter support, ultimately wreaking economic havoc. Crude Nation reveals the ways in which this mismanagement has led to Venezuela's economic ruin and turned the country into a cautionary tale for the world. Raúl Gallegos, a former Caracas-based oil correspondent, paints a picture both vivid and analytical of the country's economic decline, the government's foolhardy economic policies, and the wrecked lives of Venezuelans. Without transparency, the Venezuelan government uses oil money to subsidize life for its citizens in myriad unsustainable ways, while regulating nearly every aspect of day-to-day existence in Venezuela. This has created a paradox in which citizens can fill up the tanks of their SUVs for less than one American dollar while simultaneously enduring nationwide shortages of staples such as milk, sugar, and toilet paper. Gallegos's insightful analysis shows how mismanagement has ruined Venezuela again and again over the past century and lays out how Venezuelans can begin to fix their country, a nation that can play an important role in the global energy industry.
