Their application areas are growing continuously. For their commercial application in electromobility and stationary storage, high energy density, high rate capability and long cycle life is required. This work demonstrates the improvement in energy density and rate capability of LiFePO4 composite positive electrodes by replacing conventional binders with conducting polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), poly-o-methoxy aniline (POMA), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Conducting polymers act in a dual role as binder and conducting additive in the positive composite electrode. The capacity and charging rate capability of the electrodes are improved by using PANI and POMA. However, due to their inherent lower conductivity in the emeraldine state, complete replacement of carbon additive is not possible. On the other hand in this work it is shown that PEDOT:PSS is stable and highly conducting in the working potential window of LiFePO4 electrodes (2.8-4 V). Hence composite electrodes free of any carbon additive are prepared with PEDOT:PSS and LiFePO4. In order to understand the flow behaviour of composite slurries with different solid content; rheological measurements is performed with rheometer. All slurries show solid-like behavior due to formation of a network structure of LiFePO4 bridged by PEDOT:PSS chains. However, the solid loading of the slurries influences the distribution of the agglomerates and the binder affecting also the thickness, the adhesion and the electrical conductivity of the coatings casted from the different slurries under the same conditions. The optimum electrochemical performance is achieved with slurries containing 40 % solid loading. The electrochemical performance and the cycling stability of the composite electrodes are compared to the behaviour of conventional positive electrodes with carbon additives and PVDF binder. With increasing PEDOT:PSS content a decrease in the overvoltage and correspondingly an improvement in the rate capability is observed. Composite electrodes containing 8% PEDOT:PSS show comparable electrode capacity and better cycling stability as compared to conventional PVDF based system. engl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes efforts to develop a new class of battery electrode matrices based on conducting polymers. In the introduction section, a summary of Li-ion battery architecture is briefly provided. Following that, some technical challenges for commercializing high-energy-density Li-ion batteries are highlighted to emphasize the necessity of designing better battery electrode architectures, where electrode matrices play a key role. Electrode matrices are typically composed of adhesive binders and conductive additives. Despite being used at a small quantity in battery electrodes (less than 20 wt%), electrode matrices act as both mechanical and electrical connection frameworks for functional Li-ion batteries. The inherent issues associated with the conventional electrode matrix, polyvinylidene fluoride/carbon black (PVDF/C), are then briefly described to signify the necessity of developing alternative electrode matrices. Subsequently, research objectives and methodologies are stated to draw a roadmap towards the development of new conducting polymer-based electrode matrices. The second chapter is a comprehensive literature review, reviewing how conducting polymers are integrated into different types of rechargeable batteries in the forms of binders and electrode matrices. The review chapter also reveals several research gaps in designing and understanding electrode binders/matrices derived from conducting polymers. The third chapter demonstrates an initial effort in developing inexpensive, self-conductive, water-processable conducting polymer-based electrode matrices from pyrrole and carboxymethyl cellulose. By performing in situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, composites of polypyrrole and carboxymethyl cellulose (PPy:CMC) are synthesized and then characterized. The study has proven that PPy:CMC composites are functional electrode matrices in terms of electrical conductivity and adhesion/cohesion efficiency. Without adding additional binders and conductive additives, LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes perform as good as LiCoO2/PVDF/C reference cathodes. Chapter 4 demonstrates the application of PPy:CMC composites as electrode matrices for LiNi1/3¬Mn1/3Co1/3O2, which is an industry-relevant cathode material. Chapter 5 is dedicated to investigating the degradation of LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes by means of electrochemical and post-mortem analyses. Several hypotheses on the degradation mechanism of LiCoO2/PPy:CMC cathodes are drawn and investigated. The last Chapter summarizes research outcomes and suggests potential research directions to expand the understanding and application of conducting polymer-based electrode matrices in Li-ion batteries and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing market for energy storage devices raises the demand for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with higher energy density and power density. Enhanced LIB performance requires the improvement of the electrode materials, so that the use of conductive polymer binders becomes an important option when the choice of active materials is limited. Compared to a traditional binder, such as PVDF, the advanced polymer binders exhibit not only electrochemical stability and adhesion strength, but also ionic/electronic conductivity for a thick electrode and/or a high-capacity electrode. Such considerations make the 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid family (ProDOT) and poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis (dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} family (P(NDI2OD-T2)) of polymers attractive candidates for the LIB binders.Various experiments were designed and conducted on the selected binder candidates in order to evaluate different aspects of polymer behavior. The material properties are investigated based on thin film three-electrode systems, while the half-cell and full-cell experiments represent how the binder influences the electrodes and practical batteries, respectively. According to those experiments, the Hexyl-ProDOT polymer shows excellent mixed ionic/electronic conductivity and surface-controlled electrochemical reaction mechanism, which significantly enhances the performance of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) electrode and improves the NCA-Nb2O5 battery. However, the effectiveness of P(NDI2OD-T2) is limited by its poor stability at low voltage.

Book excerpt: Electroactive polymers have been the object of increasing academic and industrial interest and in the past ten to fifteen years substantial progress has been achieved in the development and the characterization of this important new class of conducting materials. These materials are usually classified in two large groups, according to the mode of their electric transport. One group includes polymers having transport almost exclusively of the ionic type and they are often called 'polymer electrolytes' or, in a broader way, 'polymer ionics'. The other group includes polymeric materials where the transport mechanism is mainly electronic in nature and which are commonly termed 'conducting polymers'. Ionically conducting polymers or polymer ionics may be typically described as polar macromolecular solids in which one or more of a wide range of salts has been dissolved. The most classic example is the combina tion of poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, and lithium salts, LiX. These PEO-LiX polymer ionics were first described and proposed for applications just over ten years ago. The practical relevance of these new materials was im mediately recognized and in the course of a few years the field expanded tremendously with the involvement of many academic and industrial lab oratories. Following this diversified research activity, the ionic transport mechanism in polymer ionics was soon established and this has led to the development of new host polymers of various types, new salts and advanced polymer architectures which have enabled room temperature conductivity to be raised by several orders of magnitude.
