Book excerpt: This workshop covered various techniques in nuclear many-body problems as well as various theoretical techniques, ranging through the coupled cluster method, variational Jastrow-like approaches, parquet theory etc. Particular emphasis was placed on the technique of density functional theory (plus a little on density matrices), a wide range of applications including atomic cluster theory, inhomogeneous liquids and especially He(4), simple metals and metal surfaces. In this context, there was a special session, with two papers related to the density-functional technique; one on time-dependent theory and the other on the many-body construction of density functionals with illustrative applications. Other especially notable contributions applied information turning from (mainly) techniques to physical areas in condensed matter, there was considerable emphasis on the quantal liquid He(4), with discussion not only of bulk properties but of wetting, surface tension and H(3) and He(4) mixtures. Contact with new neutron scattering experiments was highlighted in connection with bulk He(4). Some papers on high Tc materials, plus a discussion of recent progress, both experiment and theory, on electron solids, reflected important growth areas in condensed matter. In the latter area, the equilibrium between Laughlin electron liquid and electron solid was considered, the electron liquid being treated in a number of papers, including a study by quantal hypernetted chain methods. The Workshop started in 1977 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as the 1st Pan American Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories, with the purpose of bringing together scientists from the Western countries, working in many different topics of Condensed Matter Theories, to facilitate exchanges of ideas and technologies from different areas as well as collaborations among the scientists. The next five Workshops were held at Trieste, Italy (1978), in Buenos Aires, Argentina ( 1979), in Caracas, Venezuela (1980), in Mexico City, Mexico (1981) and in St. Louis, Missouri, U. S. A. (1982). Given the international dimension reached by the Workshop, it was decided to extend it into an International Workshop, which was held for the first time in Altenberg, Germany (1983). The next editions took place in Granada, Spain (1984), San Francisco, California, U. S. A. (1985), Argonne, Illinois, U. S. A. (1986), Oulu, Finland (1987), Taxco, Mexico (1988) and Campos do Jordao, Brasil (1989). Many scientists have contributed to the development of the various editions of the Work shop. However, a particular mention has to be made to Profs. Manuel de Llano and Angel Plastino who initially proposed the Workshop and carried it forward, and to Prof. J . W. Clark, whose efforts have been of immense help to its recent developments.

It was attended by about 80 scientists from allover the world. The Workshop was started in 1977 by V. C. Aguilera-Navarro, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as the Panamerican Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories, to promote the exchange of ideas and techniques of groups that normally do not interact, such as people working in the areas of Nuclear Physics and Solid state Physics, Many Body Theory, or Quantum Fluids, and Classical Statistical Mechanics, and so on. It had also the purpose of bringing together people from different regions of the globe. The next CMT Workshop was held in 1978 in Trieste, Italy, outside of America. But the next four met in the American continent: Buenos Aires, Argentina (1979), Caracas, Venezuela (1980), Mexico City, Mexico (1981), and St. Louis, Missouri (1982). At this time the scope and the participation had increased, and the name was changed to the "International" Workshop in CMT. The 1983 edition took place in Altenberg, Germany. The following CMT workshops took place in Granada, Spain (1984), San Francisco, California (1985), Argonne, Illinois (1986), Oulu, Finland (1987), Taxco, Mexico (1988), Campos do Jordao, Brazil (1989), Elba Island, Italy (1990), and Mar del Plata, Argentina (1991). There were 48 invited talks in this Workshop.
