Bednarz At the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON Future radiation treatment technology will require new inverse planning solutions to account for an increasing number of physical and biological parameters used for advanced delivery modes. The difficult challenge of preserving dosimetric accuracy while finding an optimal treatment plan over a vast search space would greatly benefit from Monte Carlo based dose calculation methods, which can offer improvements in dosimetric accuracy of up to 20% compared to deterministic methods. However, the dosimetric accuracy afforded by conventional Monte Carlo treatment planning methods come at the cost of being computationally time-consuming and memory-intensive to implement. This has largely relegated Monte Carlo treatment planning to research endeavors, where the computational time and memory considerations are less important than the accuracy afforded by Monte Carlo. While advancements in computer hardware and software have greatly improved the speed of Monte Carlo dose calculation methods, the computational demands of newer radiation therapy optimization problems still outpace the scalability of the current optimization paradigm. Therefore, the overarching goal of this research is to develop a novel approach to fluence optimization that directly incorporates optimization into the Monte Carlo transport process itself, in a manner that reduces both the computational time and memory penalties of performing transport and optimization separately. Additionally, the Monte Carlo methods and optimization theory developed in this work was applied to the novel MRI guided radiation therapy delivery modality, an emerging subset of image guided radiation therapy for which Monte Carlo dose calculation methods will be essential in generating safe and robust treatment plans.

Book excerpt: An algorithm employing a modified sequential random perturbation, or creeping random search, was applied to the problem of optimizing the parameters of a high-energy beam transport system. The stochastic solution of the mathematical model for first-order magnetic-field expansion allows the inclusion of state-variable constraints, and the inclusion of parameter constraints allowed by the method of algorithm application eliminates the possibility of infeasible solutions. The mathematical model and the algorithm were programmed for a real-time simulation facility; thus, two important features are provided to the beam designer: (1) a strong degree of man-machine communication (even to the extent of bypassing the algorithm and applying analog-matching techniques), and (2) extensive graphics for displaying information concerning both algorithm operation and transport-system behavior. Chromatic aberration was also included in the mathematical model and in the optimization process. Results presented show this method as yielding better solutions (in terms of resolutions) to the particular problem than those of a standard analog program as well as demonstrating flexibility, in terms of elements, constraints, and chromatic aberration, allowed by user interaction with both the algorithm and the stochastic model. Example of slit usage and a limited comparison of predicted results and actual results obtained with a 600 MeV cyclotron are given.

When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.

It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
