Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete is a vital component of almost every underground construction project. Because it significantly impacts both the durability and cost of a project, owners, designers, and contractors are constantly challenged with designing and placing the concrete to meet their quality standards in the most cost-effective way. Concrete for Underground Structures: Guidelines for Design and Construction can make that task a lot easier. Instead of searching pages of scattered reference materials when writing specifications, this book is a one-source guide to help you quickly find the answers you need. The first resource of its kind, this practical nuts-and-bolts handbook provides an industry voice as well as recommendations for areas of concrete application. You'll get valuable insights into current best practices for all aspects of the design and construction of underground structural concrete. Internationally respected authors examine three key applications: cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete segmental linings, and shotcrete. Each chapter addresses the differences between aboveground and underground use. The various types of concrete admixtures are also discussed, and sample specifications for each are included. Concrete for Underground Structures is an indispensable resource for industry veterans as well as an educational tool for those who are new to the profession.

Book Synopsis Practical Guide to Grouting of Underground Structures by : Raymond W. Henn
Download or read book Practical Guide to Grouting of Underground Structures written by Raymond W. Henn and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1996 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Guide to Grouting of Underground Structures presents a hands-on discussion of grouting fundamentals and provides a foundation for the development of practical specifications and field procedures. Employing a pragmatic approach to the subject of grouting, Raymond W. Henn concentrates on areas such as the types of drilling, mixing and pumping equipment, and their application. The book focuses on how cementitious grouting is used in conjunction with the excavation and lining of tunnels, shafts, and underground caverns in rock. Overviews of cementitious grouting in soils and chemical grouting are also provided. Topics covered range from record keeping to quality control and testing requirements, field operations, and production rates. Practical Guide to Grouting of Underground Structures is written as a useful handbook for engineers, construction supervisors, inspectors, and other professionals involved in the planning, design, and implementation of underground grouting programs.
Book Synopsis Underground Homes by : Louis Wampler
Download or read book Underground Homes written by Louis Wampler and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1999-03-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High energy costs have spurred the search for new and better ways to increase energy efficiency in family dwellings throughout America. One exciting solution is to reduce energy needs by building underground. Underground Homes offers the layman a complete and thoughtful approach to planning, building, and inhabiting an earth-sheltered home. Author Louis Wampler takes the reader step-by-step through a potential maze of construction problems. He uses simple language and numerous diagrams and illustrations to answer the questions people ask most often about underground homes. The book offers information and guidance on such key factors as Planning interior and exterior design Choosing the proper site Insulating for maximum energy savings Waterproofing the structure Deciding what roof will work best on the home Selecting appropriate heating and cooling systems Underground Homes also addresses specific problems associated with subterranean homesdetermining the local water table, reinforcing concretewith steel, using skylights and windowsand discusses the common psychological barriers to living underground, while presenting solutions and insights into all of these problems. Living in a house surrounded by soil, the author contends, achieves two important energy-related objectives: it moderates extreme temperature fluctuations of outside air, and it reduces temperature loss or gain. The higher energy bills rise, the more appealing energy-efficient underground dwellings are sure to become.

As such, all of the parties to a projectowners, designers, and contractorshave an interest in ensuring that concrete is designed and placed in the most cost-efficient way that ensures an appropriate level of quality in the end product. Concrete is a widely used construction material for bridges, buildings and platforms as well as for underground structures such as tunnels or reinforced concrete pipelines. In general, reinforced concrete is a very durable material capable of withstanding a large range of severe environments including marine, industrial and alpine conditions.
Book Synopsis Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock by : K. Fuenkajorn
Download or read book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock written by K. Fuenkajorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealing of boreholes and underground excavations has not received much engineering attention until fairly recently. The growing awareness of and sensitivity to environmental concerns of the technical community as well as of the public at large has resulted in an increasing recognition of the fact that these geological penetrations may have an environmental impact. The issue of possible contamination resulting from migration along boreholes, adits, shafts or tunnels unquestionably has been raised most forcefully with in the context of nuclear waste disposal. Several nuclear waste disposal programs, notably the Civilian and the Defence programs of the US De partment of Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Canadian and Swedish radioactive waste disposal programs have conducted major research efforts aimed at developing adequate seal designs for penet rations in host rock formations for high-level nuclear waste repositories. While a considerable data base has been gathered over the last two decades or so with regard to the performance of seals, most of the information is presented in research reports and widely scattered papers in journals and proceedings of conferences. Hence, the materials are not readily accessible to potential users such as designers, contractors or regulators who are not familiar with nuclear waste disposal programs.
