The concordance makes it easy to look up verses that deal with specific ideas. Over 700 footnotes give citations to how different translators have handled words and phrases that are either ambiguous or simply difficult to render into English. Who's Who and Epithets The Bhagavadgita is presented as a dialog between Krishna, who is an incarnation of God, and Arjuna, a great leader and warrior. Their conversation is being reported by Sajaya to King Dhrtarastra. In addition to those four primary dramatis person, brief backgrounds are provided for over 50 others who are mentioned in passing or connected to the story in some way. The Bhagavadgita makes frequent use of epithets or "nicknames" that are shorthand references that can be understood in context as referring to a specific person. Over 70 of these ephithets are explained and indexed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhagavad Gita is the single greatest theological and philosophical text to come out of ancient India. It addresses life's most difficult dilemmas, such as how to deal with adversity and how to find peace of mind while living in a tumultuous world. This brand new translation into English is unique in that it complements the text's ancient wisdom with inspirational illustrations. Translator Ranchor Prime has transformed an often obscure original text into language that retains the Bhagavad Gita's poetry, yet is clear and easy to understand for today's readers. His commentaries explain concepts of Hindu philosophy, for instance, karma and reincarnation, which are fundamental to the reader's overall understanding. The Bhagavad Gita is arranged as a conversation consisting of questions and answers between God--or Krishna--and the human soul, represented by Arjuna. This translation presents all 700 verses of the original text, divided into 18 chapters, and taking the form of 140 daily meditations. The book also includes a glossary of Hindu terms and an index. Approximately 120 beautiful color illustrations capture the spirit of this holy text.

Book excerpt: Gita teaches man the essentials of living in this world and beyond: Your soul is eternal and indestructible; the body beautiful is only a garment; beings and universe arose from an act of sacrifice by God; the burden of samsara (cycle of births and rebirths) can be shed by devotion to God; man by his conduct creates his own dharma and karma, which control the present and the future; plants, animals and men have souls, some sentient and some insentient; our roots are in heaven; doing one's dharma(duty)by itself is yoga; liberation is the only goal of man; there are many ways and means to attain God and nobody is excluded.

Book excerpt: A fresh, strikingly immediate and elegant verse translation of the classic, with an introduction and helpful guides to each section, by the rising American poet. Born in the United States into a secularized Hindu family, Amit Majmudar puzzled over the many religious traditions on offer, and found that the Bhagavad Gita had much to teach him with its "song of multiplicities." Chief among them is that "its own assertions aren't as important as the relationships between its characters . . . The Gita imagined a relationship in which the soul and God are equals"; it is, he believes, "the greatest poem of friendship . . . in any language." His verse translation captures the many tones and strategies Krishna uses with Arjuna--strict and berating, detached and philosophical, tender and personable. "Listening guides" to each section follow the main text, and expand in accessible terms on the text and what is happening between the lines. Godsong is an instant classic in the field, from a poet of skill, fine intellect, and--perhaps most important--devotion.
