Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, New Orleans thrived as the epicenter of classical music in America, outshining New York, Boston, and San Francisco before the Civil War and rivaling them thereafter. While other cities offered few if any operatic productions, New Orleans gained renown for its glorious opera seasons. Resident composers, performers, publishers, teachers, instrument makers, and dealers fed the public's voracious cultural appetite. Tourists came from across the United States to experience the city's thriving musical scene. Until now, no study has offered a thorough history of this exciting and momentous era in American musical performance history. John H. Baron's Concert Life in Nineteenth-Century New Orleans impressively fills that gap. Baron's exhaustively researched work details all aspects of New Orleans's nineteenth-century musical renditions, including the development of orchestras; the surrounding social, political, and economic conditions; and the individuals who collectively made the city a premier destination for world-class musicians. Baron includes a wide-ranging chronological discussion of nearly every documented concert that took place in the Crescent City in the 1800s, establishing Concert Life in Nineteenth-Century New Orleans as an indispensable reference volume.

I had been in Vietnam for the past nine months and I received a much deserved R&R. One week later I flew to Bangkok, Thailand where I met with an old friend who is working there and knew where to eat and drink. At the end of the visit the friend told me that I needed to return that coming Christmas to have a real holiday experience. Because this visit was so thrilling I was certain that Christmas was going to be the greatest time of my life. As I left Bangkok to return to Vietnam I promised myself that I was going to return to Bangkok by Christmas. Returning to Vietnam I was greeted by the Vietcong Tet offensive and the road back to Bangkok evolved into a journey of danger, excitement, love, suspense and drama. Arriving back in Bangkok by Christmas happened unexpectedly.

Yet many of its most important historical, cultural, and political events and aspects are largely unknown beyond the island. The Jamaica Reader presents a panoramic history of the country, from its precontact indigenous origins to the present. Combining more than one hundred classic and lesser-known texts that include journalism, lyrics, memoir, and poetry, the Reader showcases myriad voices from over the centuries: the earliest published black writer in the English-speaking world; contemporary dancehall artists; Marcus Garvey; and anonymous migrant workers. It illuminates the complexities of Jamaica's past, addressing topics such as resistance to slavery, the modern tourist industry, the realities of urban life, and the struggle to find a national identity following independence in 1962. Throughout, it sketches how its residents and visitors have experienced and shaped its place in the world. Providing an unparalleled look at Jamaica's history, culture, and politics, this volume is an ideal companion for anyone interested in learning about this magnetic and dynamic nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, suburban growth and the decline of industry have left cities throughout Europe and America searching for creative and effective ways to revitalize blighted areas and reclaim underused land. In Grounds for Review, Andrew Theokas examines one particularly exciting tool for reinvigorating urban areas: the garden festival. These festivals, which began in post-war Europe, have been popular throughout the Continent for decades but are just beginning to gain currency in the United States. A garden festival temporarily transforms a previously derelict area, such as an abandoned factory lot, into a festival of horticulture, combining luxurious landscapes with exhibits and carnival rides. Most garden festivals last about six months--during which time they draw millions of visitors--but the success of the fair itself is only the initial step in a detailed plan for urban improvement. At the conclusion of the festival, funds from its operation are used to transform the grounds once again, this time with an eye toward the long-term use of the land. The enduring result of a successful garden festival is thus the transformation of derelict land into a community asset, such as a new urban park or an affordable housing project. Theokas considers here fifteen garden festivals--in Europe, England, and the United States--in all their dimensions. He examines the role they play in stimulating urban redevelopment, their effects on the practice of landscape architecture, and the contentious debates over their financing, purposes, and future prospects. This highly illustrated volume will serve as a useful introduction to garden festivals for all those interested in urban planning, horticulture, and the future of cities.
