Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised edition of this book offers an expanded overview of the reliability design of mechanical systems and describes the reliability methodology, including a parametric accelerated life test (ALT) plan, a load analysis, a tailored series of parametric ALTs with action plans, and an evaluation of the final designs to ensure the design requirements are satisfied. It covers both the quantitative and qualitative approaches of the reliability design forming in the development process of mechanical products, with a focus on parametric ALT and illustrated via case studies. This new reliability methodology – parametric ALT should help mechanical and civil engineers to uncover design parameters improving product design and avoiding recalls. Updated chapters cover product recalls and assessment of their significance, modern definitions in reliability engineering, parametric accelerated life testing in mechanical systems, and extended case studies. For this revised edition, one new chapter has been introduced to reflect recent developments in analysis of fluid motion and mechanical vibration. Other chapters are expanded and updated to improve the explanation of topics including structures and load analysis, failure mechanics, design and reliability testing, and mechanical system failure. The broad scope gives the reader an overview of the state-of-the-art in the reliability design of mechanical systems and an indication of future directions and applications. It will serve as a solid introduction to the field for advanced students, and a valuable reference for those working in the development of mechanical systems and related areas.

Book excerpt: This research aims at developing an unique knowledge-based system methodology and associated techniques to tackle the problems occurring in the early design stages of mechanical systems. Domain knowledge transformation (DKT) methodology unveils our vision of the early stages in engineering design process and the applicability of knowledge-based design systems. As the cornerstone of computerizing the abstract design knowledge, our method of the symbolic representation of design knowledge, namely, conceptual graphs (CG) paired with AI language PROLOG, exhibits its expressive power and flexibility. To elaborate the design specifications, we offer a new scheme that incorporates the techniques of domain knowledge guided structured interview (DKGSI), question and answer (Q & A) interface and dynamic knowledge base, etc. Then we demonstrate a new systematic approach of using case-based reasoning (CBR) to generate design solution concepts. A novel architecture of DKT knowledge-based design system, called DKT-PS Designer, is proposed in the light of the conceptual design of the positioning systems. The real life design cases run through all the discussions for illustrative purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes basic reliability concepts – parametric ALT plan, failure mechanism and design, and reliability testing with acceleration factor and sample size equation. A generalized life-stress failure model with a new effort concept has been derived and recommended to calculate the acceleration factor of the mechanical system. The new sample size equation with the acceleration factor has also been derived to carry out the parametric ALT. This new parametric ALT should help a mechanical/civil engineer to uncover the design parameters affecting reliability during the design process of the mechanical system. Consequently, it should help companies to improve product reliability and avoid recalls due to the product/structure failures in the field. As the improper or missing design parameters in the design phase are experimentally identified by this new reliability design method - parametric ALT, the mechanical/civil engineering system might improve in reliability by the increase in lifetime and the reduction in failure rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book: The commonly referred to 'mechanical systems' today do not comprise only of mechanisms and mechanical components but often are results of multidisciplinary synthesis of mechanical, electronic, computer and information system based elements. Representative examples are a robot, a washing machine and a computer printer. To be able to evolve such products and work in multidisciplinary teams, a very clear understanding of flow of material, energy and information is needed; points of observation and places of interfaces to outside systems need to be specified. As compared to well-established products, these new products require to be evolved from the concept to function to design to prototyping and testing stages. Due to increasing short life of product designs, these proceses have to be carried out in ever decreasing time spans. This can be achieved often by resorting to model-based computer simulation, virtual prototyping and rapid prototyping techniques. Computer simulation requires mathematical model of the system to be built with all the interacting components and it leads to design development and optimization; virtual prototyping helps in designing real world interfaces and spatial description. Rapid prototyping helps in actual testing of the product. A systems-based approach to mechanical design helps in carrying out all these activities. Finally, an application of "A Case Study" method is followed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aIm of the first two German editions of our book Kon struktionslehre (Engineering Design) was to present a comprehensive, consistent and clear approach to systematic engineering design. The book has been translated into five languages, making it a standard international reference of equal importance for improving the design methods of practising designers in industry and for educating students of mechanical engineering design. Although the third German edition conveys essentially the same message, it contains additional knowledge based on further findings from design research and from the application of systematic design methods in practice. The latest references have also been included. With these additions the book achieves all our aims and represents the state of the art. Substantial sections remain identical to the previous editions. The main extensions include: - a discussion of cognitive psychology, which enhances the creativity of design work; - enhanced methods for product planning; - principles of design for recycling; - examples of well-known machine elements*; - special methods for quality assurance; and - an up-to-date treatment of CAD*.
