Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial optimization is a multidisciplinary scientific area, lying in the interface of three major scientific domains: mathematics, theoretical computer science and management. The three volumes of the Combinatorial Optimization series aim to cover a wide range of topics in this area. These topics also deal with fundamental notions and approaches as with several classical applications of combinatorial optimization. Concepts of Combinatorial Optimization, is divided into three parts: - On the complexity of combinatorial optimization problems, presenting basics about worst-case and randomized complexity; - Classical solution methods, presenting the two most-known methods for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, that are Branch-and-Bound and Dynamic Programming; - Elements from mathematical programming, presenting fundamentals from mathematical programming based methods that are in the heart of Operations Research since the origins of this field.

Download or read book Phase Transitions in Combinatorial Optimization Problems written by Alexander K. Hartmann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-05-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise, comprehensive introduction to the topic of statistical physics of combinatorial optimization, bringing together theoretical concepts and algorithms from computer science with analytical methods from physics. The result bridges the gap between statistical physics and combinatorial optimization, investigating problems taken from theoretical computing, such as the vertex-cover problem, with the concepts and methods of theoretical physics. The authors cover rapid developments and analytical methods that are both extremely complex and spread by word-of-mouth, providing all the necessary basics in required detail. Throughout, the algorithms are shown with examples and calculations, while the proofs are given in a way suitable for graduate students, post-docs, and researchers. Ideal for newcomers to this young, multidisciplinary field.

This book covers this important topic as computational optimization has become increasingly popular as design optimization and its applications in engineering and industry have become ever more important due to more stringent design requirements in modern engineering practice. Presents a collection of the most up-to-date research, providing a complete overview of multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems and applications Introduces new approaches to handle different engineering and science problems, providing the field with a collection of related research not already covered in the primary literature Demonstrates the efficiency and power of the various algorithms, problems and solutions, including numerous examples that illustrate concepts and algorithms
Book Synopsis Combinatorial Optimization for Undergraduates by : L. R. Foulds
Download or read book Combinatorial Optimization for Undergraduates written by L. R. Foulds and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of this book is to introduce the main concepts of discrete optimization problems which have a finite number of feasible solutions. Following common practice, we term this topic combinatorial optimization. There are now a number of excellent graduate-level textbooks on combina torial optimization. However, there does not seem to exist an undergraduate text in this area. This book is designed to fill this need. The book is intended for undergraduates in mathematics, engineering, business, or the physical or social sciences. It may also be useful as a reference text for practising engineers and scientists. The writing of this book was inspired through the experience of the author in teaching the material to undergraduate students in operations research, engineering, business, and mathematics at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. This experience has confirmed the suspicion that it is often wise to adopt the following approach when teaching material of the nature contained in this book. When introducing a new topic, begin with a numerical problem which the students can readily understand; develop a solution technique by using it on this problem; then go on to general problems. This philosophy has been adopted throughout the book. The emphasis is on plausibility and clarity rather than rigor, although rigorous arguments have been used when they contribute to the understanding of the mechanics of an algorithm.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Robust Combinatorial Optimization by : Marc Goerigk
Download or read book An Introduction to Robust Combinatorial Optimization written by Marc Goerigk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-08-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a self-contained introduction to the world of robust combinatorial optimization. It explores decision-making using the min-max and min-max regret criteria, while also delving into the two-stage and recoverable robust optimization paradigms. It begins by introducing readers to general results for interval, discrete, and budgeted uncertainty sets, and subsequently provides a comprehensive examination of specific combinatorial problems, including the selection, shortest path, spanning tree, assignment, knapsack, and traveling salesperson problems. The book equips both students and newcomers to the field with a grasp of the fundamental questions and ongoing advancements in robust optimization. Based on the authors’ years of teaching and refining numerous courses, it not only offers essential tools but also highlights the open questions that define this subject area.

Book Synopsis Probability Theory and Combinatorial Optimization by : J. Michael Steele
Download or read book Probability Theory and Combinatorial Optimization written by J. Michael Steele and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an introduction to the state of the art of the probability theory that is most directly applicable to combinatorial optimization. The questions that receive the most attention are those that deal with discrete optimization problems for points in Euclidean space, such as the minimum spanning tree, the traveling-salesman tour, and minimal-length matchings. Still, there are several nongeometric optimization problems that receive full treatment, and these include the problems of the longest common subsequence and the longest increasing subsequence. The philosophy that guides the exposition is that analysis of concrete problems is the most effective way to explain even the most general methods or abstract principles. There are three fundamental probabilistic themes that are examined through our concrete investigations. First, there is a systematic exploitation of martingales. The second theme that is explored is the systematic use of subadditivity of several flavors, ranging from the naïve subadditivity of real sequences to the subtler subadditivity of stochastic processes. The third and deepest theme developed here concerns the application of Talagrand's isoperimetric theory of concentration inequalities.

Download or read book CATBox written by Winfried Hochstättler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph algorithms are easy to visualize and indeed there already exists a variety of packages to animate the dynamics when solving problems from graph theory. Still it can be difficult to understand the ideas behind the algorithm from the dynamic display alone. CATBox consists of a software system for animating graph algorithms and a course book which we developed simultaneously. The software system presents both the algorithm and the graph and puts the user always in control of the actual code that is executed. In the course book, intended for readers at advanced undergraduate or graduate level, computer exercises and examples replace the usual static pictures of algorithm dynamics. For this volume we have chosen solely algorithms for classical problems from combinatorial optimization, such as minimum spanning trees, shortest paths, maximum flows, minimum cost flows, weighted and unweighted matchings both for bipartite and non-bipartite graphs.
