Book excerpt: Weld Quality: The Role of Computers documents the proceedings of the International Conference on Improved Weldment Control with Special Reference to Computer Technology, held in Vienna, Austria, 4-5 July 1988, under the auspices of the International Institute of Welding. The topics of the four sessions are: (I) Design, Calculation and Prediction Models For Metallurgical Processes/Conception; (II) Inspection and In-Service Monitoring; (III) Fabrication, Quality Assurance; and (IV) Expert Systems, Data Banks and Future Possibilities. Session I includes papers on the use of computer technology to establish the quality of the welded joints; computer-aided design system for design of fillet welds with optimum shape; and the use of numerical simulation software for predetermination and optimization of the mechanical resistance of brazed joints. The papers in Session II cover topics such as acoustic emission testing; eddy current inspection system for weld testing; and holographic imaging of weld cracks. Session III includes papers on a computer controlled friction welding system and a CAQ-system for welding workshops. The presentations in Session IV include an approach for writing conventional software and expert systems for welding engineers and an expert system for robotic welding.

Book excerpt: Bipolar complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (BiCMOS) processes can be considered as the most general solution for RF products, as they combine the mature manufacturing tools of CMOS with the speed and drive capabilities of silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). HBTs in turn are major contenders for partially filling the terahertz gap, which describes the range in which the frequencies generated by transistors and lasers do not overlap (approximately 0.3 THz to 30 THz). To evaluate the capabilities of such future devices, a reliable prediction methodology is desirable. Using a heterogeneous set of simulation tools and approaches allows to achieve this goal successively and is beneficial for troubleshooting. Various scientific fields are combined, such as technology computer-aided design (TCAD), compact modeling and parameter extraction. To create a foundation for the simulation environment and to ensure reproducibility, the used material models of the hydrodynamic and drift-diffusion approaches are introduced in the beginning of this thesis. The physical models are mainly based on literature data of Monte Carlo (MC) or deterministic simulations of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). However, the TCAD deck must be calibrated on measurement data too for a reliable performance prediction of HBTs. The corresponding calibration approach is based on measurements of an advanced SiGe HBT technology for which a technology-specific parameter set of the HICUM/L2 compact model is extracted for the high-speed, medium-voltage and high-voltage transistor versions. With the help of the results, one-dimensional transistor characteristics are generated that serve as reference for the doping profile and model calibration. By performing elaborate comparisons between measurement-based reference data and simulations, the thesis advances the state-of-the-art of TCAD-based predictions and proofs the feasibility of the approach. Finally, the performance of a future technology in 28 nm is predicted by applying the heterogeneous methodology. On the basis of the TCAD results, bottlenecks of the technology are identified.

Advances in technology have made it commercially feasible to place a powerful engineering workstation on every designer's desk. A major selling point for these workstations is the computer aided design software they provide, rather than the actual hardware. The trade magazines are full of advertisements promising full menu design systems, complete with an integrated database (preferably "relational"). What does it all mean? This book focuses on the critical issues of managing the information about a large design project. While undeniably one of the most important areas of CAD, it is also one of the least understood. Merely glueing a database system to a set of existing tools is not a solution. Several additional system components must be built to create a true design management system. These are described in this book. The book has been written from the viewpoint of how and when to apply database technology to the problems encountered by builders of computer-aided design systems. Design systems provide an excellent environment for discovering how far we can generalize the existing database concepts for non-commercial applications. This has emerged as a major new challenge for database system research. We have attem pted to avoid a "database egocentric" view by pointing out where existing database technology is inappropriate for design systems, at least given the current state of the database art. Acknowledgements.

Book excerpt: In this ESPRIT research report of a group of engineers in the CAD*I project the possibility of using a database management system (DBMS) for computer aided design (CAD) purposes is analyzed and conditions are derived that enable CAD systems to manage CAD models containing increasing amounts of data and more and more intelligent relations. Today CAD models constitute isolated islands of data stored in independent files, and to create and maintain relations between pieces of information stored in several models (files) in a multi-user environment is a complex task. At a conceptual level, a relational DBMS associated with the language SQL (ISO standard) is the ideal tool to create and maintain such relations. At the implementation level, it is of the highest importance to define the optimum granularity of information to be stored in the database in order to get a good response time from such a system.
