Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maj. William Macnaughton of the Canadian army and Maj. John Bowles of O.S.S. lead a team into occupied Yugoslavia. Captured on Christmas 1944, the team's enlisted men are mercilessly beheaded while Bowles and Macnaughton are held as bargaining chips in case Germany loses the war. Tortured by the SS, and then liberated at the end of the war--Bowles and Macnaughton hunt for their captors across four continents to bring them to justice. The book delves into how the United States actually helped some Nazi war criminals escape, including the Nazi who helped put Neil Armstrong on the moon even though he had killed a bunch of GIs in an underground V-2 factory because one of them allegedly stole a loaf of bread. Other points of historical interest is the story of the attempt by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis., to get all of the killers reponsible for the Malmdy Massacre off the hook. McCarthy claimed the U.S. Army obtained confessions by torturing the SS men by attacking their genitals. That charge turns out to be a lie. Bowles an all-American from Ohio and Macnaughton who becomes the last Canadian to be knighted organize a team to capture the perpetrators in a story of revenge in the page-turner thriller "Comrades, Avenge us." Reviews: by Edward J.Trout, a schoolteacher from Bristol, Pa. I read Stephen's Book in record time. Kudos to Mr. Esrati for a "great" read. It was one of those "rare books" that one wants to slow down when one nears the end. Well all readers of this genre know why. There are few authors who can carry the reader and accurate history in their narrative. Stephen's technique of having his characters narrate "mini-history lessons" on such a complex topic was a "sui-generis" stylistic accomplishment. Review: by Kevin Begin, a musician from Dayton, Ohio Stephen Esrati wrote a book that kept my interest from start to finish. I thought I was reading a non-fiction novel until I read the acknowledgements at the end. The story moves quickly starting at the planning stage of a military intelligence operation during WWII and finally focusing on the search for Nazi war criminals. The book has no slow sections, and as such, I was always engrossed with the material. What makes the book read like non-fiction must be the result of Mr. Esrati's dilegent research into the people and places that comprise this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves adventure and the pursuit of justice.

Book excerpt: The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the schematics for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners—but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth Prayer tells the story of Israel in its early days. The book follows half a dozen people from the 1930s through 1960 and focuses on one theme: "Who is a Jew?" That question, which has divided Israel since independence, is raised by a character saying "I want to be a Jew, a Jewish Jew from Palestine." It is raised again by a follower of the Irgun Zvai Leumi who uses "Hebrew" as a nationality. And it is raised again when a whole village of Italian Catholics converts to Judaism during the war and must fight for acceptance as Jews. Finally, it is raised in the death of a baby of an Israeli Jew and an American Baptist, a baby that cannot be buried under Israeli law. Also touched on are civil rights, freedom of the press, the Law of Return, the Eichmann case, and the little Eichmann case (a Zionist leader accused of helping the Germans), which leads to unpunished murder. The novel brings the story only to 1960, but it portrays the new country without the adulation of previous English-language fiction, as might be imagined since the main character is the woman who broadcast as the Voice of Fighting Zion, broadcasting station of the Irgun. Other characters include a kibbutz woman who must leave her settlement because her husband voted for the wrong party, an assimilated American Jew who was active in Peter Bergsons American League for a Free Palestine. One character spends time in a Lebanese concentration camp where this author was the first American hostage in Lebanon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid and its resistance come to life in this memoir making it a vital historical document of its time and for our own. In 1969, while a student in South Africa, John Schlapobersky was arrested for opposing apartheid and tortured, detained and eventually deported. Interrogated through sleep deprivation, he later wrote secretly in solitary confinement about the struggle for survival. Those writings inform this exquisitely written book in which the author reflects on the singing of the condemned prisoners, the poetry, songs and texts that saw him through his ordeal, and its impact. This sense of hope through which he transformed his life guides his continuing work as a psychotherapist and his focus on the rehabilitation of others. “[T]hetale of an ordinary young man swept one day from his life into hell, testimony to the wickedness a political system let loose in its agents and, above all, an intimate account of how a man became a healer.”—Jonny Steinberg, Oxford University From the introduction: I was supposed to be a man by the time I turned 21, by anyone’s reckoning. By the apartheid regime’s reckoning, I was also old enough to be tortured. Looking back, I can recognize the boy I was. The eldest of my grandchildren is now approaching this age, and I would never want to see her or the others – or indeed anyone else – having to face any such ordeal. At the time my home was in Johannesburg, only some thirty miles from Pretoria, where I was thrown into a world that few would believe existed, populated by creatures from the darkest places, creatures of the night, some in uniform. I was there for fifty-five days, and never went home again.

Book excerpt: In October 1934, the Chinese Communist Army found itself facing annihilation, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Nationalist soldiers. Rather than surrender, 86,000 Communists embarked on an epic flight to safety. Only thirty were women. Their trek would eventually cover 4,000 miles over 370 days. Under enemy fire they crossed highland awamps, climbed Tibetan peaks, scrambled over chain bridges, and trudged through the sands of the western deserts. Fewer than 10,000 of them would survive, but remarkably all of the women would live to tell the tale. Unbound is an amazing story of love, friendship, and survival written by a new master of adventure narrative.

Words that come from the heart enter the heart.” Many of these wills come from plain ordinary fathers and mothers, yet they touch the hearts of all who read them. And so I suggest that you read these wills, and then that you try your hand at writing one of your own. If you do, you will leave a gift to the future, and the not-yet-born children of your children’s children will thank you and bless you for it. from the Introduction Ethical wills are precious spiritual documents, windows into the souls of those who write them. Those who write ethical wills—often parents writing letters to their children or grandparents to their grandchildren—try to sum up what they have learned in life, and what they want most for, and from, their loved ones. In this unique combination of “What Is” and “How To,” Riemer and Stampfer show how to prepare an ethical will and provide as guides examples of ethical wills written by almost 100 famous and ordinary people. This wide range of contemporary ethical wills reveals the ongoing relevance of ethical wills for people of all faiths, all backgrounds.
