Book excerpt: We present a brief survey of the current state of the art in network reliability. We survey only exact methods; Monte Carlo methods are not surveyed. Most network reliability problems are, in the worst case, NP-hard and are, in a sense, more difficult than many standard combinatorial optimization problems. Although the above sounds very discouraging, there are in fact linear and polynomial time algorithms for network reliability problems of special structure. We review general methods for network reliability computation and discuss the central role played by domination theory in network reliability computational complexity. We also point out the connection with the more general problem of computing the reliability of coherent structure. The class of coherent structures contains both directed and undirected networks as well as logic (or fault) tress without not gates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a probabilistic model, a rare event is an event with a very small probability of occurrence. The forecasting of rare events is a formidable task but is important in many areas. For instance a catastrophic failure in a transport system or in a nuclear power plant, the failure of an information processing system in a bank, or in the communication network of a group of banks, leading to financial losses. Being able to evaluate the probability of rare events is therefore a critical issue. Monte Carlo Methods, the simulation of corresponding models, are used to analyze rare events. This book sets out to present the mathematical tools available for the efficient simulation of rare events. Importance sampling and splitting are presented along with an exposition of how to apply these tools to a variety of fields ranging from performance and dependability evaluation of complex systems, typically in computer science or in telecommunications, to chemical reaction analysis in biology or particle transport in physics. Graduate students, researchers and practitioners who wish to learn and apply rare event simulation techniques will find this book beneficial.

Book excerpt: Network Reliability: Experiments with a Symbolic Algebra Environment examines two intertwined topics: computational methods for computing bounds on three measures of network reliability, and a symbolic algebra system to support these computations. It describes, in algorithmic outlines, efficient techniques for reliability bounds and discusses the implementation of the techniques. It explores all-terminal reliability, two-terminal reliability, and reliability of interconnection networks. Consistent with real-world experience, the computational environment and results are strongly supported by sound theoretical development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping in view the growth of the technological frontiers, there is always a need for the development of reliable, fault tolerant and cost- effective interconnection networks (INs) which are the critical metrics to achieve the goal of parallelism. The main objective of this book is to design new fault tolerant interconnection network layouts capable of path redundancy among dynamic failures. New INs designs are proposed and their observed results are found promising when compared with some of the earlier networks. The book also covers the reliability evaluation of various industrial network topologies considering multiple reliability performance parameters (2-TR, broadcast and ATR). Finally, the book also focuses on reliability evaluation and comparison of various topologies considering connectivity among multiple sources and multiple destinations (MSMT) nodes.

Book excerpt: Advanced Computing, Networking and Informatics are three distinct and mutually exclusive disciplines of knowledge with no apparent sharing/overlap among them. However, their convergence is observed in many real world applications, including cyber-security, internet banking, healthcare, sensor networks, cognitive radio, pervasive computing amidst many others. This two volume proceedings explore the combined use of Advanced Computing and Informatics in the next generation wireless networks and security, signal and image processing, ontology and human-computer interfaces (HCI). The two volumes together include 132 scholarly articles, which have been accepted for presentation from over 550 submissions in the Third International Conference on Advanced Computing, Networking and Informatics, 2015, held in Bhubaneswar, India during June 23–25, 2015.

Book excerpt: Monte Carlo simulation is one of the best tools for performing realistic analysis of complex systems as it allows most of the limiting assumptions on system behavior to be relaxed. The Monte Carlo Simulation Method for System Reliability and Risk Analysis comprehensively illustrates the Monte Carlo simulation method and its application to reliability and system engineering. Readers are given a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Monte Carlo sampling and simulation and its application for realistic system modeling. Whilst many of the topics rely on a high-level understanding of calculus, probability and statistics, simple academic examples will be provided in support to the explanation of the theoretical foundations to facilitate comprehension of the subject matter. Case studies will be introduced to provide the practical value of the most advanced techniques. This detailed approach makes The Monte Carlo Simulation Method for System Reliability and Risk Analysis a key reference for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers and practitioners. It provides a powerful tool for all those involved in system analysis for reliability, maintenance and risk evaluations.

Book excerpt: This introductory book equips the reader to apply the core concepts and methods of network reliability analysis to real-life problems. It explains the modeling and critical analysis of systems and probabilistic networks, and requires only a minimal background in probability theory and computer programming. Based on the lecture notes of eight courses taught by the authors, the book is also self-contained, with no theory needed beyond the lectures. The primary focus is on essential “modus operandi,” which are illustrated in numerous examples and presented separately from the more difficult theoretical material.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Monte Carlo Methods held at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, 1998). The workshop brought together researchers in physics, statistics, and probability. The papers in this volume - of the invited speakers and contributors to the poster session - represent the interdisciplinary emphasis of the conference. Monte Carlo methods have been used intensively in many branches of scientific inquiry. Markov chain methods have been at the forefront of much of this work, serving as the basis of many numerical studies in statistical physics and related areas since the Metropolis algorithm was introduced in 1953. Statisticians and theoretical computer scientists have used these methods in recent years, working on different fundamental research questions, yet using similar Monte Carlo methodology. This volume focuses on Monte Carlo methods that appear to have wide applicability and emphasizes new methods, practical applications and theoretical analysis. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students who study and/or use Monte Carlo methods in areas of probability, statistics, theoretical physics, or computer science.
