Book Synopsis Telling Tales and Crafting Books by : Dorsey Armstrong
Download or read book Telling Tales and Crafting Books written by Dorsey Armstrong and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great corpus that is medieval literature contains, at its very center, the tale. These verse and prose fictional narratives, as well as stories that are grounded in some degree of historical truth, are the foundation of what readers, scholars, and enthusiasts often point to as signifiers of the medieval age. These tales - from the skillfully crafted to the more rudimentary and plain - often make familiar to modern readers what seems so distant and foreign about the Middle Ages. This volume of essays focuses on the tale and its ability to create "mirth," what modern audiences would often define as "happiness" or "joy," and the significance that the book has had on the transference of this mirth to audiences. This volume also celebrates the scholarship of Thomas H. Ohlgren, a medievalist whose work encompasses a number of different areas, but at its center lives the power of the tale and its ability to create a lasting impression on readers, both medieval and modern.

Book Synopsis Toward Descriptive Standards by : Bureau of Canadian Archivists. Working Group on Archival Descriptive Standards
Download or read book Toward Descriptive Standards written by Bureau of Canadian Archivists. Working Group on Archival Descriptive Standards and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon recent efforts of Canadian archivists to improve the development and application of technology in order to achieve more effective control of and access to their holdings, this report contains the deliberations and recommendations of the Canadian Working Group on Archival Descriptive Standards, which held seven meetings between April 1984 and March 1985. The report begins with a brief history of attempts to establish standards as a means of demonstrating what progress has been made and what remains to be done. The first of four chapters then discusses--on a theoretical level--issues related to description and the standards needed to establish a conceptual framework within which to analyze the current situation and to present recommendations for future development of standards. The second chapter explores the variety of standards available, with particular emphasis on those most relevant to archival needs. The third chapter describes a survey conducted by the group, who sent a questionnaire to 361 Canadian repository libraries (response rate = 56%) to obtain information about the current construction of archival finding aids. The data are analyzed and the findings discussed. The fourth chapter presents the 35 recommendations made by the group together with a brief discussion of each recommendation. A concluding statement encourages Canadian archivists to take advantage of automation and launch the development of descriptive standards. Four appendixes are provided: a list of the respondents; the survey questionnaire; an outline of the data fields in an archival database; and a 267-item annotated bibliography. (CGD)
Book Synopsis Introduction to Object ID by : Robin Thornes
Download or read book Introduction to Object ID written by Robin Thornes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The illicit trade in art and other cultural objects now constitutes one of the most prevalent categories of international crime. Law-enforcement agencies have long recognized that documentation is critical to the protection and recovery of these objects. Standards were needed that would make it possible for information on stolen objects to move easily across electronic networks and, at the same time, that would be intelligible to law enforcement and art communities alike. Developed through the collaboration of museums, police and customs agencies, the art trade, the insurance industry, and appraisers of art and antiques, Object ID is an international standard that defines the minimal information needed to identify art, antiques, and antiquities. Introduction to Object ID summarizes the evolution of Object ID, explains its nine categories, and offers guidelines for using them. The book provides suggestions for writing descriptions of objects and includes a brief discussion of five additional categories that some institutions opt to employ. The second part of the book sets out guidelines for choosing viewpoints, selecting backgrounds, and positioning lighting when documenting cultural objects with photography. The Introduction to series acquaints professionals and students with the complex issues and technologies in the production, management, and dissemination of cultural heritage information resources.
