Book excerpt: As a result of preliminary observations of word processing in elementary level language the seven case studies presented in this report reveal the effectiveness of current word processing (WP) activities within their respective instructional contexts. Each study is presented separately, detailing the classroom context, tasks and outcomes, program effectiveness, and results. Observations common to all of the studies are discussed under the following categories: (1) common features, such as the limitations created by the physical set-up of the labs and teachers' general satisfaction with the software; (2) younger versus older students, with younger students exhibiting the least facility with the keyboard and various machine functions while older students are able to take advantage of more of the functions offered by word processing; (3) regular classrooms versus labs, where computers in the regular classroom may create a physically congested environment and require a longer initial start-up time than would a lab situation; and (4) special education, specifically how WP can benefit students in this setting. Generally, the studies indicated that the type and/or degree of success students attain using WP is governed by the context in which it is used. Most of the studies showed that students wrote more and wrote better with word processors than they did with traditional tools. They improved their spelling, punctuation, organization, word choice, and ideas. Computer use also had a positive effect on the writing of children with special needs (e.g., English as a second language) and with learning disabilities. While further study is needed to confirm this, it appears that there is a transfer of the skills acquired through word processing to writing with traditional tools. Primary-age students seem to adapt more readily to the computer than do older elementary school students. Research also seems to indicate a relationship between reading and writing skills.

Book excerpt: This study examined the creative uses of computers in elementary schools and their impact on student's confidence and self-esteem, student-student interaction, student-teacher interaction, male and female students, classroom management, the role of the teacher, special education, teacher training, teachers not involved in the study, and curricular areas such as computer literacy, learning Logo as a programming language, problem-solving and problem-creation, mathematics, oral communication, reading and writing, the arts, and values and the individual and society. Findings are based on intensive examinations of real classrooms over a 2-year period. A total of 433 students in 18 classrooms that involved 13 different teachers were studied; of these, 5 teachers and 40 students were involved in the study for 2 years. Classrooms had 1 to 5 computers over the entire school year, or students had access to a computer laboratory. Logo and word processing were studied extensively; the use of a graphics tablet and Musicland were explored for short periods. Findings indicate that the creative use of computers fosters the development of independent and original thinking and that an environment that encourages exploration leads to extensive social interaction among students; in addition, students become more willing to express, refine, or revise their ideas. A significantly greater proportion of students experienced an increase in their confidence and self-esteem if their teacher was able to give them autonomy over their learning. The impact on students' attention span and cognitive development in the special education classes was also significant. Appendices and selected references are provided. (Author/JB)
