Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Faith. Hope. and Charity and the greatest of these is Charity. " "Hardware. Software. and Lil'ell'are and the greatest of these is . . . " As information technology ceased to be the prerogative of computer scientists and electronics engineers, those of us from other disciplines had to contend with the jargon which was already in vogue. We learned to live with "hardware" and "software. " We were less enthusiastic about "Iiveware. " Polite and some impolite questioning revealed that "Iiveware" was a euphemism for "people. " We were not amused. As one spirited participant observed, "I refused to go home and tell my children that Almighty God had made liveware in His own image and likeness. " People are too important to be known as anything but people. Moreover, it is the importance of people that is the dominating and recurring theme of this book by Christopher Baldry. He deals with virtually every aspect of the problems concerning men and women and their recourse to the equipment. This could well become the definitive work in the field. In addition to the details of health hazards, industrial relations, new technology agreements and the like, Dr. Baldry grapples with two great underpinning issues.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 2.1, Trinity College Dublin - The University of Dublin, language: English, abstract: One of the primary fears in the current global community is the exponential growth and continued sophistication of artificial intelligence. Fundamental to this concern is the wide ranging impact that this growth will not only leave on the world as we currently know it, but on the place of humans in that world. This has become termed as ‘the singularity’—the point in time when machines will become self-learning, and more importantly, self-aware. It is at this point that machines and robotics will be elevated from the current monotonous job operations to more high skilled areas. This study looks into the drive towards advanced automation and the increased sophistication of artificial intelligence in conjunction with the cloud and how this growth will eventually lead to technological unemployment. Some economists are predicting up to a 50% job loss or more. Predicting the future typically means extrapolating the past. It often fails to anticipate breakthroughs. But it is precisely those unpredictable breakthroughs in computing that could have the biggest impact on the workforce. Education and up skilling current workers will be the only way to ensure continued relevance within an automated workforce. By focusing on education it will ensure people are best placed to take advantage of this new age of advanced automation. This dissertation concludes that innovation through creativity will ensure employment opportunities continue to present themselves to those best prepared for such changes.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, grade: A-, Mount Kenya University, language: English, abstract: Computer of data communication remains to be a fundamental part of both the modern systems as well as retrieval systems of their online access. The current information system has been noted to operate in an online interactive mode whereby the user has the opportunity of interacting with the host from a diverse remote location by using a communication link, unlike the conventional systems. Telecommuting or telecommunication can be categorized as an alternative type of work arrangement, whereby responsibilities or duties are carried out at an off-site location, not to mention that the employees utilize telecommunications technology to connect to the workplace. Scholars have demonstrated diverse factors behind the emergence and development of telecommuting. One of the factors is that several firms are downsizing their operations with the aim of lowering costs through reduction of the office space. Another factor is that the elevated competition from the United States and even the international scope has forced many organizations to adopt extended workdays together with flexible schedules of work so as to respond better to the needs of their customers. Furthermore, this concept has emerged due to the fact that there is an elevating affordable and cost effective development of computer and telecommunication technologies. Thus, teleworking has tremendously developed from its diffident beginnings in the early 1970s to achieve unparalleled level today and it is expected to continue expanding in the years to come. The objective of this essay is to discuss the nature of telecommuting, its impact on the individual and the organizations for which the teleworkers work along with its future development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing returns to schooling and rising inequality are well documented for industrial countries and for some developing countries. The growing demand for skills is associated with recent technological developments. The authors argue that computers in the workplace represent one manifestation of these changes. Research in the United States and industrial countries documents a premium for computer use. But there is recent evidence suggesting that computer skills by themselves do not command a wage premium. The authors review the literature and use data from a survey of higher education graduates in Vietnam. The results support the unobserved heterogeneity explanation for computer wage premiums. They suggest that computers may make the productive workers even more productive. However, given the scarcity of computers in low-income countries, an operational strategy of increasing computer availability and skills would seem to offer considerable hope for increasing the incomes of the poor.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: A, University of Kent, course: BSC, language: English, abstract: Information is necessary for many businesses whether small, medium, or large, and the necessity of the information depends on a variety of uses. For example, in the case of proper planning in the business, senior managers will require information to facilitate this planning. However, middle-level management relies on detailed systems of information in order to properly control and monitor various activities in the business. At the same time, various employees who have operational roles also tend to rely on information systems in order to efficiently carry out their duties in the business. Due to all these necessities, many businesses tend to develop information systems that operate at the same time. The Microsoft Company applies Management Information Systems (MIS) in dealing with internal affairs of the company. An Office Automation System (OAS) improves the productivity of employees who need to process data and information (Bill 2006). The Microsoft Company deals with several software systems and the use of OAS becomes handy since it enhances employees’ productivity. Employees have the ability to work from their own homes, as well as other areas at their convenience. Apart from these two systems of information, the other systems of information applicable by the Microsoft Company is the use of Decision Support Systems commonly known as DSS. A decision support system enables the management to make decisions in situations surrounded by uncertainty (Bill 2006). A lot of uncertainty occasionally arises from these big companies such as Microsoft and in such times, the use of DSS becomes handy. This method consists of techniques and tools capable of collecting relevant information and providing analysis of all the relevant information gathered. In the process of analysis provisions, the method also provides alternatives used in case of absence of relevant information. Apart from the provisions of alternatives, this method also involves the use of complex spreadsheets and various databases used to develop several “what-if” models.

Book excerpt: Computer scientists are working on reproducing all human skills using artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. Unsurprisingly then, many people worry that these advances will dramatically change work skills in the years ahead and perhaps leave many workers unemployable. This report develops a new approach to understanding these computer capabilities by using a test based on the OECD's Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC) to compare computers with human workers. The test assesses three skills that are widely used at work and are an important focus of education: literacy, numeracy and problem solving with computers. Most workers in OECD countries use the three skills every day. However, computers are close to reproducing these skills at the proficiency level of most adults in the workforce. Only 13% of workers now use these skills on a daily basis with a proficiency that is clearly higher than computers. The findings raise troubling questions about whether most workers will be able to acquire the skills they need as these new computer capabilities are increasingly used over the next few decades. To answer those questions, the report's approach could be extended across the full range of work skills. We need to know how computers and people compare across all skills to develop successful policies for work and education for the future.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: A, Kenyatta University, language: English, abstract: Technology assists us in to accomplish many tasks at work more efficiently thus allowing employees to work smarter rather than harder. However, digital tools can either increase or decrease the quality of work and productivity depending on the user (Green & Singleton, 2013). In addition, digital tools are helping to improve learning through better communication and innovative instruction strategies. However, some aspects of digital technology such as social media and mobile applications can acts as a distraction at work or at school (Lee, 2001). In this regard, this essay evaluates whether digital technology will make us more productive at work or school in general.

This book was released on 2005-12-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One outcome of recent progress in educational technology is strong interest in providing effective support for learning in complex and ill-structured domains. We know how to use technology to promote understanding in simpler domains (e.g., orientation information, procedures with minimal-branching, etc.), but we are less sure how to use technology to support understanding in more complex domains (e.g., managing limited resources, understanding environmental impacts, etc.). Such domains are increasingly significant for society. Technology (e.g., collaborative tele-learning, digital repositories, interactive simulations, etc.) can provide conceptually and functionally rich domains for learning. However, this introduces the problem of determining what works in which circumstances and why. Research and development on these matters is reflected in this collection of papers. This research suggests a need to rethink foundational issues in educational philosophy and learning technology. One major theme connecting these papers is the need to address learning in the large - from a more holistic perspective. A second theme concerns the need to take learners where and as they are, integrating technology into effective learning places. Significant and systematic progress in learning support for complex domains demands further attention to these important issues.
