Book excerpt: In October 1978, a group of 41 scientists from 14 countries met in Erice, Sicily to attend the Second Course of the Interna tional School of Radiation Damage and Protection "Ettore Majorana", the proceedings of which are contained in this book. The countries represented at the School were: Brazil, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was officially sponsored by the Italian Health Physics Association, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research, and the Sicilian Regional Government. In addition, administrative and tech nical support was received from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and from CERN. The past 15 or so years have witnessed a significant develop ment of computer methods in the science of radiation protection. The radiation transport codes associated with hadronic and electro magnetic cascades, reactor shielding, unfolding techniques, and gamma ray spectrum analysis have reached the state-of-the-art level, and the Erice Course aimed at presenting as comprehensive an over view of these programs as was possible within the allotted time span.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the most widely used computational methods and techniques for calculating shielding parameters that are required for radiation-shielding investigations of dosimetric materials. The theoretical, experimental, and simulation methods and their applications are described. The book is divided into thirteen chapters that are arranged in a systematic order and written by experienced scientists and academicians worldwide. The gamma-ray shielding parameter calculations with the Monte Carlo simulation techniques viz. MCNP, GEANT4, FLUKA, and EGS5 codes are illustrated. Descriptions of various software such as XCOM, WinXCom, FLUKA, Phy-X, BMIX, ASFIT, and ANSI are provided. A review of fundamental quantities for calculation of ambient dose, i.e., photon and neutron buildup factors, is presented. A phantom-based computation model has been included to indicate the applications of radiation dosimetry in medical diagnostics. The chapters on computed-tomography (CT) have been included to provide insight into the radiations' diagnostic capabilities and applications. The shielding effectiveness of some materials such as ignimbrite rocks, amorphous metals, marbles, dosimetric materials, and novel shielding materials have been investigated. The most recent concept of multi-layered shielding and related buildup factors' influence on the shielding effectiveness is described with a computer program, the RIMP-TOOLKIT. This book is the result of the authors' hard-work and determination during the worldwide lockdown period caused by the spread of COVID-19. The conclusions presented in this book will be useful in nuclear radiation shielding and for dosimetric purposes. Additionally, this book will be helpful for postgraduate students of physics and chemistry.

Book excerpt: Thoroughly updated throughout, this second edition of Monte Carlo Techniques in Radiation Therapy: Applications to Dosimetry, Imaging, and Preclinical Radiotherapy, edited by Joao Seco and Frank Verhaegen, explores the use of Monte Carlo methods for modelling various features of internal and external radiation sources. Monte Carlo methods have been heavily used in the field of radiation therapy in applications such as dosimetry, imaging, radiation chemistry, modelling of small animal irradiation units, etc. The aim of this book is to provide a compendium of the Monte Carlo methods that are commonly used in radiation therapy applications, which will allow students, postdoctoral fellows, and university professors to learn and teach Monte Carlo techniques. This book provides concise but detailed information about many Monte Carlo applications that cannot be found in any other didactic or scientific book. This second edition contains many new chapters on topics such as: Monte Carlo studies of prompt gamma emission Developments in proton imaging Monte Carlo for cone beam CT imaging Monte Carlo modelling of proton beams for small animal irradiation Monte Carlo studies of microbeam radiation therapy Monte Carlo in micro- and nano-dosimetry GPU-based fast Monte Carlo simulations for radiotherapy This book is primarily aimed at students and scientists wishing to learn and improve their knowledge of Monte Carlo methods in radiation therapy.

Since the first edition, many new developments have been made in the basic methods for dosimetry, i.e. ionization chambers, TLD, chemical dosimeters, and photographic films. Radiation Dosimetry: Instrumentation and Methods, Second Edition brings to the reader these latest developments. Written at a high level for medical physicists, engineers, and advanced dosimetrists, it concentrates only on evolvement during the last decade, relying on the first edition to provide the basics.
