Corrosion prediction techniques are currently inadequate to quarantee the canister performance over this length of time. We are attempting to better predict the corrosion process with the help of computer modeling. We developed a program to calculate anodic and cathodic polarization curves using Tafel slopes, equilibrium exchange current densities, and other electrochemical parameters obtained from the experimental corrosion literature. The model generates and displays polarization curves for different values of environmetal parameters such as temperature, pH, and concentrations of pertinent species in the vicinity of the canister material. For the case of uniform corrosion in acidic media, our model predicts corrosion rates in fair agreement with literature values.

Book excerpt: A key component of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) being designed for containment of spent-fuel and high-level waste at the proposed geological respository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada is a two-layer canister. In this particular design, the inner barrier is made of a corrosion resistant material (CRM) such as Alloy 825, 625 or C-22, while the outer barrier is made of a corrosion-allowance material (CAM) such as A516 or Monel 400. At the present time, Alloy C-22 and A516 are favored. This publication addresses the development of models to account for corrosion of Alloy C-22 surfaces exposed directly to the Near Field Environmental (NFE), as well as to the exacerbated conditions in the CAM-CRM crevice.

Book excerpt: Corrosion in nuclear power plants cause reductions in efficiency and increases in deposit build-up on plant surfaces, making for expensive maintentance and potential radiological health hazards. This book guides studies to predict and minimize corrosion, thus making nuclear power safer and more cost effective. Too often, reliance on empirical models and on-site testing of existing plants makes study and prediction of corrosive effects in nuclear reactors into a pricey and lengthy process. Introducing the experimental procedures, set up, sample preparation and computer modeling suggested in this book will save precious time and resources in a field where the significant time and expense to get and keep plants on-line are two of the chief concerns preventing broader commerical viability. * The only book to focus exclusively on preventing nuclear corrosion * Uses computer modelling to tie together chemical engineering, civil engineering, corrosion science, and nuclear engineering into a cohesive solution to a vexing nucelar problem * Includes all fundamental equations, example data sets and experimental techniques

Book excerpt: The safety assessment models for the deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel require a fundamental understanding of the corrosion of spent fuel in a failed waste container. The overall research goal of this project is to investigate the corrosion of simulated spent fuel under permanent disposal conditions, using both model simulations and experimental investigations. A model for fuel corrosion has been expanded to determine the relative importance of radiolytic hydrogen and hydrogen from corrosion of the steel vessel in suppressing fuel corrosion. It was shown that, for CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) fuel with moderate in-reactor burnup, only micromolar concentrations of hydrogen from steel corrosion are required to completely suppress fuel corrosion. In a partially closed system (i.e., within cracks in the fuel) radiolytic hydrogen alone can suppress corrosion to a negligible level. The model was validated by comparing the calculated corrosion rates with published measurements. Agreement between calculated and measured rates indicated that corrosion is controlled by the rate of radiolytic production of oxidants, in particular hydrogen peroxide, irrespective of the reactivity of the fuel. Experimentally, the influence of rare earth doping on the reactivity of UO2 was investigated. For REIII-doped UO2, the onset of matrix dissolution was accompanied by the enhanced oxidation of the matrix to UIV1{u2212}2xUV2xO2+x. This can be attributed to the onset of tetragonal lattice distortions as oxidation proceeds which leads to the clustering of defects, enhanced diffusion of OI (interstitial oxygen)to deeper locations and destabilization of the fluorite lattice. A further investigation of the doping effect was performed on a series of (U1{u2212}yGdy)O2 materials (y = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.10). Overall the increase in doping up to 10% does not exert a major influence on reactivity possibly due to the competition between an increase in the number of (Ov)s (oxygen vacancy) and a contraction in the lattice constant.

Book excerpt: The corrosion of titanium alloy canisters in a plutonic rock repository, as envisaged in the AECL/Ontario Hydro HLNW disposal concept, has been explored using four deterministic models. A Mixed Potential Model (MPM) was used to calculate the corrosion potential of the canister as a function of time after resaturation, and it is predicted that the corrosion potential will shift in the negative direction as the ambient oxygen is consumed coupled with a much smaller positive shift due to the decay in temperature. Maximum general corrosion rates have been estimated using the Maximum Rate Model (MRM) and the Radiolytic Maximum Rate Model (RMRM), both of which equate thecorrosion rate to the maximum possible flux of oxygen (MRM) and oxygen plus oxidizing radiolysis products (RMRM) to the canister surface. These calculations suggest that the radiolysis of water is not of major significance in establishing the general corrosion rate. Furthermore, general corrosion is predicted not to be a threat to the integrity of a thin wall (6.35mm) titanium container within the 500 year design life. Finally, corrosion rates have also been estimated using the WAPPA code and the container is predicted to withstand crevice corrosion for up to 1200 years and to be unbreached by general corrosion for 2000-2500 years after resaturation.

Book excerpt: Corrosion of steel canisters, stored in a repository for spent fuel and high-level nuclear wastes, leads to the generation and accumulation of hydrogen gas in the backfilled emplacement tunnels, which may significantly affect long-term repository safety. Previous studies used H2 generation rates based on the volume of the waste or canister material and the stoichiometry of the corrosion reaction. However, iron corrosion and H2 generation rates vary with time, depending on factors such as amount of iron, water availability, water contact area, and aqueous and solid chemistry. To account for these factors and feedback mechanisms, we developed a chemistry model related to iron corrosion, coupled with two-phase (liquid and gas) flow phenomena that are driven by gas-pressure buildup associated with H2 generation and water consumption. Results indicate that by dynamically calculating H2 generation rates based on a simple model of corrosion chemistry, and by coupling this corrosion reaction with two-phase flow processes, the degree and extent of gas pressure buildup could be much smaller compared to a model that neglects the coupling between flow and reactive transport mechanisms. By considering the feedback of corrosion chemistry, the gas pressure increases initially at the canister, but later decreases and eventually returns to a stabilized pressure that is slightly higher than the background pressure. The current study focuses on corrosion under anaerobic conditions for which the coupled hydrogeochemical model was used to examine the role of selected physical parameters on the H2 gas generation and corresponding pressure buildup in a nuclear waste repository. The developed model can be applied to evaluate the effect of water and mineral chemistry of the buffer and host rock on the corrosion reaction for future site-specific studies.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disposal of radioactive waste of all types and levels is of great concern today. Radioactive waste disposal itself is not new—procedures for its handling, safeguards, regulation, and implementation from the creation of waste to its final disposition continue to develop. Technologies spanning the last six decades enable the storage of hazardous materials over the long-term. Long-term disposal in the United States however, only applies to Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW). Currently, legislation does not permit the final disposal of any other types of waste. Because LLRW is the only form of radioactive waste that is disposed of today, the precautions and conditions for setting it to its “final resting place” are important matters. At the Federal Waste Disposal Facility located in Andrews, Texas, LLRW is stored in what are called Reinforced Modular Concrete Containers (RMCCs) and are intended for final disposal deep underground. These RMCCs are initially checked for structural integrity to handle significant loading. While these RMCCs are designed to remain structurally sound under these loads, these concrete structures are susceptible to corrosion because of its steel reinforcement. When corrosion at the steel occurs, the RMCC will inevitably fail. The service life of the RMCC studied is calculated to be at least 300 years under ideal conditions. However, the design does not inherently consider the effects of corrosive elements that may be present in LLRW. This thesis provides a predictive model of the service life of the RMCC under the failure mechanism of steel corrosion by chlorides. Chloride concentrations in the LLRW will eventually make contact with the RMCC’s walls and will diffuse through concrete’s relatively porous network. Varying the mix designs between different cementitious materials, its water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, temperatures, and chloride exposure are critical to maintaining the RMCC’s service life. It shows that less supplementary cementitious materials, a higher w/c ratio, higher temperatures, and higher chloride concentrations lower the container’s time to failure. This information is critical to subcontractor construction of the RMCCs and confirms its suitability for long-term disposal of LLRW.
