Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the European Symposium on Programming (ESOP) held jointly with the seventeeth Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) in Rennes, France, February 26-28, 1992 (the proceedings of CAAP appear in LNCS 581). The previous symposiawere held in France, Germany, and Denmark. Every even year, as in 1992, CAAPis held jointly with ESOP. ESOP addresses fundamental issues and important developments in the specification and implementation of programming languages and systems. It continues lines begun in France and Germany under the names "Colloque sur la Programmation" and the GI workshop on "Programmiersprachen und Programmentwicklung". The programme committee received 71 submissions, from which 28 have been selected for inclusion in this volume.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the ?nal proceedings of the MetaInformatics Symposium 2003 (MIS 2003). The event was held September 17–20 on the campus of the Graz University of Technology in Graz, Austria. As with previous events in the MIS series, MIS 2003 brought together - searchers and practitioners from a wide variety of ?elds to discuss a broad range of topics and ideas related to the ?eld of computer science. The contributions that were accepted to and presented at the symposium are of a wide variety. Theyrangefromtheoreticalconsiderationsofimportantmetainformatics-related questions and issues to practical descriptions of approaches and systems that - fer assistance in their resolution. I hope you will ?nd the papers contained in this volume as interesting as the other members of the program committee and Ihave. These proceedings would not have been possible without the help and ass- tance of many people. In particular I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Springer-Verlag in Heidelberg, Germany, especially Anna Kramer, the computer science editor, and Alfred Hofmann, the executive editor for the LNCS series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the third International Workshop on Static Analysis (WSA`93), held in Padova, Italy, in September 1993. The objective of the international workshop series WSA is to serve as a forum for the discussion of the various aspects of static analysis in different programming paradigms. The clearly increasing mumbers of submitted papers and workshop participants point out the growing importance of static analysis techniques for logical, functional, concurrent and parallel languages as well as for parallel term rewriting systems. This proceedings contains, besides the abstracts or full papers of the invited talks given by Pascal Van Hentenryck, Peter van Roy, and Paul Hudak, full versions of the 20 contributed papers selected from a total of 68 submissions by an international program committee consisting of many renown researchers in the field. The volume is organized in sections on fixpoint computation, concurrency, parallelism, transformation, logic programs, term rewriting systems, strictness, reasoning about programs, and types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Semantics has become a popular tool among programming language researchers for specifying many aspects of programming languages. However, due to the lack of practical tools for implementation, the natural semantics formalism has so far largely been limited to theoretical applications. This book introduces the rational meta-language RML as a practical language for natural semantics specifications. The main part of the work is devoted to the problem of compiling natural semantics, actually RML, into highly efficient code. For this purpose, an effective compilation strategy for RML is developed and implemented in the rml2c compiler. This compiler ultimately produces low-level C code. Benchmarking results show that rml2c-produced code is much faster than code resulting from compilers based on alternative implementation approaches.

Book excerpt: LPAR is an international conference series aimed at bringing together researchers interested in logic programming and automated reasoning. The research in logic programming grew out of the research in automated reasoning in the early 1970s. Later, the implementation techniques known from logic programming were used in implementing theorem proving systems. Results from both fields applied to deductive databases. This volume contains the proceedings of LPAR '93, which was organized by the Russian Association for Logic Programming. The volume contains 35 contributed papers selected from 84 submissions, together with an invited paper by Peter Wegner entitled "Reasoning versus modeling in computer science".

Book excerpt: Software Process Improvement (SPI) efforts are being undertaken by organizations of all types and sizes as they attempt to deal with the challenges of quality, complexity and competitiveness. Software process improvement efforts rely on the successful integration of many technical, organizational and methodological issues. SPI has provided a rich field for both conceptual and practical research in industry and academia. Software Process Improvement: Concepts and Practices provides the opportunity for rich socio-technical and interdisciplinary studies in addition to those studies that primarily focus on process and/or enabling technology issues. This book addresses numerous aspects of SPI program development, implementation, trends, opportunities and future challenges in organizations.

At the same time the field of formal methods is blossoming and has proven its importance in industrial and government applications. The FAABS (Formal Approaches to Agent-Based Systems) workshops, merging the concerns of the two fields, provided a timely and compelling platform on which the growing concerns and requirement of agent-based systems users that systems should be accompanied by behavioral assurances, could be discussed. This book has arisen from the overwhelming response to FAABS ’00, ’02 & ’04 and all chapters are updated or represent new research, and are designed to provide a more in-depth treatment of the topic. Examples of how others have applied formal methods to agent-based systems are included, plus formal method tools & techniques that readers can apply to their own systems. Agent Technology from a Formal Perspective provides an invaluable in-depth view of the key issues related to agent technology from a formal perspective, for both researchers and practitioners. This is a relatively new interdisciplinary field, and there is enormous room for further growth The book not only creates an initial foundation, but points to the gaps; indicating open problems to be addressed by future researchers, students & practitioners.

Book excerpt: The 18 revised full papers presented in this book together with an introductory survey were carefully reviewed and constitute the documentation of the Second International Workshop on Self-adaptive Software, IWSAS 2001, held in Balatonfüred, Hungary in May 2001. Self-adaptive software evaluates its own behavior and changes it when the evaluation indicates that the software does not accomplish what it is intended to do or when better functionality or better performance is possible. The self-adaptive approach in software engineering builds on well known dynamic features familiar to Lisp or Java programmes and aims at improving the robustness of software systems by gradually adding new features of self-adaption or autonomy.
