Book excerpt: Information technology (IT) is widely understood to be the enabling technology of the 21st century. IT has transformed, and continues to transform, all aspects of our lives: commerce and finance, education, energy, health care, manufacturing, government, national security, transportation, communications, entertainment, science, and engineering. IT and its impact on the U.S. economyâ€"both directly (the IT sector itself) and indirectly (other sectors that are powered by advances in IT)â€"continue to grow in size and importance. IT’s impacts on the U.S. economyâ€"both directly (the IT sector itself) and indirectly (other sectors that are powered by advances in IT)â€"continue to grow. IT enabled innovation and advances in IT products and services draw on a deep tradition of research and rely on sustained investment and a uniquely strong partnership in the United States among government, industry, and universities. Past returns on federal investments in IT research have been extraordinary for both U.S. society and the U.S. economy. This IT innovation ecosystem fuels a virtuous cycle of innovation with growing economic impact. Building on previous National Academies work, this report describes key features of the IT research ecosystem that fuel IT innovation and foster widespread and longstanding impact across the U.S. economy. In addition to presenting established computing research areas and industry sectors, it also considers emerging candidates in both categories.

Book excerpt: Developing a knowledge model helps to formalize the difficult task of analyzing crime incidents in addition to preserving and presenting the digital evidence for legal processing. The use of data analytics techniques to collect evidence assists forensic investigators in following the standard set of forensic procedures, techniques, and methods used for evidence collection and extraction. Varieties of data sources and information can be uniquely identified, physically isolated from the crime scene, protected, stored, and transmitted for investigation using AI techniques. With such large volumes of forensic data being processed, different deep learning techniques may be employed. Confluence of AI, Machine, and Deep Learning in Cyber Forensics contains cutting-edge research on the latest AI techniques being used to design and build solutions that address prevailing issues in cyber forensics and that will support efficient and effective investigations. This book seeks to understand the value of the deep learning algorithm to handle evidence data as well as the usage of neural networks to analyze investigation data. Other themes that are explored include machine learning algorithms that allow machines to interact with the evidence, deep learning algorithms that can handle evidence acquisition and preservation, and techniques in both fields that allow for the analysis of huge amounts of data collected during a forensic investigation. This book is ideally intended for forensics experts, forensic investigators, cyber forensic practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in cyber forensics, computer science and engineering, information technology, and electronics and communication.

Book excerpt: Application of Machine Learning in Smart Agriculture is the first book to present a multidisciplinary look at how technology can not only improve agricultural output, but the economic efficiency of that output as well. Through a global lens, the book approaches the subject from a technical perspective, providing important knowledge and insights for effective and efficient implementation and utilization of machine learning. As artificial intelligence techniques are being used to increase yield through optimal planting, fertilizing, irrigation, and harvesting, these are only part of the complex picture which must also take into account the economic investment and its optimized return. The performance of machine learning models improves over time as the various mathematical and statistical models are proven. Presented in three parts, Application of Machine Learning in Smart Agriculture looks at the fundamentals of smart agriculture; the economics of the technology in the agricultural marketplace; and a diverse representation of the tools and techniques currently available, and in development. This book is an important resource for advanced level students and professionals working with artificial intelligence, internet of things, technology and agricultural economics. Addresses the technology of smart agriculture from a technical perspective Reveals opportunities for technology to improve and enhance not only yield and quality, but the economic value of a food crop Discusses physical instruments, simulations, sensors, and markets for machine learning in agriculture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) has grown rapidly in the last few decades, allowing the development of faster and more reliable assistive technologies based on direct links between the brain and an external device. Novel applications of BCIs have also been proposed, especially in the area of human augmentation, i.e., enabling people to go beyond human limitations in sensory, cognitive and motor tasks. Brain-imaging techniques, such as electroencephalography, have been used to extract neural correlates of various brain processes and transform them, via machine learning, into commands for external devices. Brain stimulation technology has allowed to trigger the activation of specific brain areas to enhance the cognitive processes associated to the task at hand, hence improving performance. BCIs have therefore extended their scope from assistive technologies for people with disabilities to neuro-tools for human enhancement. This Special Issue aims at showing the recent advances in BCIs for human augmentation, highlighting new results on both traditional and novel applications. These include, but are not limited to, control of external devices, communication, cognitive enhancement, decision making and entertainment.
