The conference on Computer Applications in Biotechnology is organized every three years and aims to stimulate contacts between specialists active in academic research and industrial development in all major areas of biotechnology where computers are used to aid bioprocess design, supervision, diagnosis, operation, optimization and control. Essential bioprocess systems engineering aspects ranging from metabolic engineering to the control of bio-production plants are covered. CAB8 was supported by IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) and EFB (European Federation of Biotechnology). This conference series results from the merger of EFB (European Federation of Biotechnology), ICCAFT (International Conference on Computer Applications in Fermentation Technology) and IFAC Modelling and Control of Biotechnical Processes Symposia. The scientific program was arranged in several sessions as listed in this volume. Two poster sessions were held in which excellent papers were presented. In addition, three plenary lectures given by Prof. George Bastin (UCL, Belgium), Prof. Douglas Kilburn (UBC, Canada), and Prof. Benhard O. Palsson (UCSD, USA) reviewed the state of art in metabolic engineering modelling, interaction between molecular biology and bioprocess engineering, and influence of bioinformatics on metabolic engineering. In total, 79 papers of very high quality were presented with 76 papers appearing in this Proceedings volume.

Due to its role in biological sciences and biotechnology, new name is given to this apllication as biocomputers. This application of computers in biotechnology as computational biology and bioinformatics is the phenomenonal and inevitable. This applied science is a excellent fusion of life sciences and computers. Hence, this application of computers is very helpul to solve some untold facts in biotechnology as in the field of forensic sciences, genetics, evolutionary biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etiopathogenesis of epidemics & genetic disorders, cell & molecular biology. I also express my profound sense of gratitude and sincere thanks to Mrs. Bhawna sharma(B.Sc. and M.C.A.[Master of Computer Application] from Maharashi Dayanand University, Rohtak, INDIA)for her encouragement and support during the writing of this book. She is also insipiration for me to complete the project of this book. Last but least, my indebted thanks to All Mighty and my loving parents, My Father,"Late Mr. Ram Kumar Sharma & my mother,"Mrs. Sushila Sharma.

Book excerpt: Agricultural engineering, developed as an engineering discipline underpinned by physics, applies scientific principles, knowledge, and technological innovations in the agricultural and food industries. During the last century, there was exponential growth in engineering developments, which has improved human wellbeing and radically changed how humans interact with each other and our planet. Among these, “Agricultural Mechanization” is ranked among the top 10 in a list of 20 Top Engineering Achievements of the last century that have had the greatest impact on the quality of life. While many success stories abound, the problems of low appeal among students, identity crises, and limited job opportunities in many climes continue to trouble the discipline’s future in many parts of the world. Yet agriculture and agricultural engineering remain fundamental to assuring food and nutrition security for a growing global population. Agricultural, Biosystems, and Biological Engineering Education provides the first comprehensive global review and synthesis of different agricultural, biosystems, and biological engineering education approaches, including a detailed exposition of current practices from different regions. Key Features: Describes novel approaches to curriculum design and reform Outlines current and emerging epistemology and pedagogies in ABBE education Provides a framework to grow agricultural engineering in Africa and other developing regions Highlights the role of ABBE education in the context of the SDGs Presented in 3 parts and containing 42 chapters, this book covers the historical evolution of agricultural engineering education and discusses the emergence of biological and biosystems engineering education. It will appeal to engineers and other professionals, education planners and administrators, and policy makers in agriculture and other biological industries.
