Book excerpt: This textbooks demonstrates the application of software tools in solving a series of problems from the field of designing power system structures and systems. It contains four chapters: The first chapter leads the reader through all the phases necessary in the procedures of computer aided modeling and simulation. It guides through the complex problems presenting on the basis of eleven original examples. The second chapter presents application of software tools in power system calculations of power systems equipment design. Several design example calculations are carried out using engineering standards like MATLAB, EMTP/ATP, Excel & Access, AutoCAD and Simulink. The third chapters focuses on the graphical documentation using a collection of software tools (AutoCAD, EPLAN, SIMARIS SIVACON, SIMARIS DESIGN) which enable the complete automation of the development of graphical documentation of a power systems. In the fourth chapter, the application of software tools in the project management in power systems is discussed. Here, the emphasis is put on the standard software MS Excel and MS Project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important environmental challenge today's society is facing is to reduce the effects of CO2 emissions and global warming. Such an ambitious challenge can only be achieved through a holistic approach, capable of tackling the problem from a multidisciplinary point of view. One of the core technologies called to play a critical role in this approach is the use of energy storage systems. These systems enable, among other things, the balancing of the stochastic behavior of Renewable Sources and Distributed Generation in modern Energy Systems; the efficient supply of industrial and consumer loads; the development of efficient and clean transport; and the development of Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) and intelligent cities. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) consist of two (or more) storage devices with complementary key characteristics, that are able to behave jointly with better performance than any of the technologies considered individually. Recent developments in storage device technologies, interface systems, control and monitoring techniques, or visualization and information technologies have driven the implementation of HESS in many industrial, commercial and domestic applications. This Special Issue focuses on the analysis, design and implementation of hybrid energy storage systems across a broad spectrum, encompassing different storage technologies (including electrochemical, capacitive, mechanical or mechanical storage devices), engineering branches (power electronics and control strategies; energy engineering; energy engineering; chemistry; modelling, simulation and emulation techniques; data analysis and algorithms; social and economic analysis; intelligent and Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems; and so on.), applications (energy systems, renewable energy generation, industrial applications, transportation, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and critical load supply, etc.) and evaluation and performance (size and weight benefits, efficiency and power loss, economic analysis, environmental costs, etc.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a growing interest in harnessing renewable energy resources particularly for electricity generation. Autonomous wind-solar power systems are being installed in areas which are far from the electric grid. In contrast to conventional systems, the control of input resources is impossible, therefore serving the load demand in a reliable manner would necessitate some back-up from diesel engines and storage batteries. The installation of an autonomous renewable energy system at a given site should be preceded by an assessment of the available resources that justifies the suitability of such a system. If the site turns out to be a good candidate, the proper size of system components should be determined. This depends on the load that ought to be met, the capacity of renewable resources, the available space for wind towers and solar panels, and the capital and running costs of system components. Once size optimization is achieved, the autonomous system must be controlled in order to correctly match load requirements with instantaneous variation of input energy. In this thesis, three aims are set forth. The first aim is to evaluate both wind and solar resources in Lebanon. The second is to lay down the basis for a computer aided design and analysis tool that employs linear programming techniques to optimize the size of system components. This should lead to the minimization of electricity production cost while supplying the load in a reliable way. Along with this line, this thesis addresses the situation where efficient utilization of available resources is of prime interest. In this case, the software helps identifying the load that matches the available resource while maintaining a low level of unmet energy. Finally, the software simulates the operation of a sophisticated controller that monitors the system. The controller interferes in each period of operation and determines the amount of energy drawn from each component to meet the load, the unmet and spilled energies, and the operational costs in that period. Although three different control strategies have been adopted in this work, the software is able to accommodate other policies.
