Magnus forces and moments are generated by the distorted boundary layer which results from a spinning body at angle yaw. The Ballistic Research laboratory is conducting and supporting theoretical and experimental Magnus research efforts. The theoretical effort involves: (1) numerical calculation of the fully three-dimensional boundary layer with the added complication of interaction between surface spin and cross flow velocity; (2) three-dimensional inviscid flow calculations over a body plus boundary layer displacement surface with no plane of symmetry. Several types of experimental data, such as surface pressures, Magnus forces, boundary layer surveys, flow visualization, and skin friction, were obtained to evaluate and provide guidance to the theoretical effort. Comparison of the theory to experimental data shows the agreement to be very good. (Author).

Book excerpt: A combined theoretical-experimental study of the Magnus effect on yawed, spinning projectiles was discussed. The overall objective of this effort is to develop a method for computing Magnus effects that could be used in the design of artillery projectiles. Numerical techniques have been developed for computing: (1) the three dimensional turbulent boundary layer development over a yawed, spinning body of revolution; (2) the three dimensional boundary-layer displacement surface for an arbitrary body of revolution; and (3) the three dimensional inviscid flow field over a yawed, pointed body of completely general configuration with no plane of symmetry. The computations have been compared to experimental measurements of Magnus force and turbulent boundary layer profile characteristics. It is further emphasized that effects due to nose bluntness and protuberances such as rotating bands must be examined before the computation capability can be considered to have the full capability desired to artillery projectile design studies.

The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.

The effects of surface spin, angle of attack and Mach number on boundary-layer transition have been studied using spark shadowgraphs of the flow. These shadowgraphs were taken while the model was mounted on offset struts to enable views to be obtained of the flow completely about the circumference of the model. The Magnus and normal forces were measured using the strain-gage balance technique for different boundary layer configurations. These measurements revealed a substantial sensitivity of Magnus force to the boundary layer configuration. A preliminary comparison of the Magnus measurements to the theory of Vaughn and Reis yielded poor agreement. The data have been tabulated to facilitate their use in the evaluation of proposed theoretical models of the Magnus effect.

The measurements were made using a flattened total head probe at one axial station near the base of the model for 10 azimuthal stations about the circumference. The test conditions were: M = 3, angle of attack = 4 deg, omega = 0 and 10,000 RPM. The trends observed in comparing measurements with and without the model spinning were: (1) the boundary layer is more thick and less full where surface spin opposes the crossflow velocity; and (2) the boundary layer is less thick and more full where surface spin is in the same direction as the crossflow velocity. The approach follows strictly the three-dimensional boundary layer theory, and the lack of initial profiles is readily resolved. The rule of the dependence zone is satisfied with the Krause scheme and complete numerical solutions are obtained for an ellipsoid of revolution at 6 deg incidences and two different spin rates. Spinning causes asymmetry which, in turn, introduces the Magnus force. The asymmetry is most pronounced in crossflow, but is also noticeable in the skin-friction and displacement thickness of the meridional flow. A variety of crossflow profiles are determined as are the streamline patterns in the cross- and meridional-planes which are especially useful in visualizing the flow structure. Detailed distribution of skin frictions, displacement thicknesses, and centrifugal pressure are presented. A new derivation of the total displacement thickness is given and a negative displacement thickness is found physically meaningful. The Magnus forces due to the crossflow skin friction and the centrifugal pressure are determined; these two forces partly compensate each other. At lower spin rate, the frictional force is larger, resulting in a positive Magnus force. At high spin rate, the opposite is obtained. At high incidence (30 deg), the leeside separated region associated with an open separation is found not amenable to a classical boundary layer treatment. The present boundary layer calculations could be carried out, in the longitudinal direction, only up to the beginning of an open separation. Since an open separation moves forward with increasing incidence, the calculable area, therefore, decreases. (Author).
