Book excerpt: Axisymmetric vortex breakdown was simulated numerically within an enclosed circular cylinder with: (1) fixed cylindrical wall-endwall and one rotating lid; and (2) rotating cylindrical wall-endwall with a differentially rotating lid. Variations of the two dynamical parameters permitted the calculation of cases in which incipient vortex breakdown was observed. A vortex breakdown criterion recently proposed by Brown & Lopez was tested against these numerical solutions.

Book excerpt: A modified vortex filament method is used to simulate the evolution of the transient formation of vortex breakdown. The method supports previous studies, illustrating that vortex breakdown. The method supports previous studies, illustrating that vortex breakdown is initiated by a negative vorticity gradient which triggers an inviscid self-induction feedback mechanism and when subsequently subjected to viscous effects, results in steady state vortex breakdown. The results of the method are first validated experimentally with numerous past dye flow visualization and particle image velocimetry investigations, and then used to qualitatively investigate the self-induction flow mechanisms during the formative stages of stages of transient breakdown. As a complement to the qualitative investigation, a quantitative analysis is performed, which yields a local and dynamical relationship relating the azimuthal vorticity gradient at a particular location to the curvature of the instantaneous streamline, projected onto the meridional plane, at the same location. This relationship further shows that once radial expansion commences in the region of negative azimuthal vorticity, it continues to expand such that the meridional streamline becomes more curved with time, supporting that the negative vorticity gradient not only initiates the radial expansion, but also, feeds its subsequent growth. On the contrary, in the region of a positive gradient, the streamline continues to flatten fostering radial contraction of the vortex tube, which provides a closure to expansion. In attempt to suppress breakdown in two preliminary control simulations, this positive azimuthal vorticity gradient is then introduced to the vortex flow just prior to breakdown. Results from these control simulations illustrated a temporal and spatial delay in breakdown as well as exhibiting flow behavior associated with complete elimination of breakdown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.
Book Synopsis Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation of Vortex Breakdown for a Delta Wing at High Angle of Attack by : Jacob A. Freeman

This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the commercially available FLUENT 3-D flow field solver, this research effort investigated vortex breakdown over a delta wing at high angle of attack (a) in preparation for investigation of active control of vortex breakdown using steady, along- core blowing A flat delta-shaped half-wing with sharp leading edge and sweep angle of 600 was modeled at a 180 in a wind tunnel at Mach 0,04 and Reynolds number of 3,4 x 10(sub 5). A hybrid (combination of structured and unstructured) numerical mesh was generated to accommodate blowing ports on the wing surface. Results for cases without and with along-core blowing included comparison of various turbulence models for predicting both flow field physics and quantitative flow characteristics, FLUENT turbulence models included Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), Renormalization Group k-e, Reynolds Stress (RSM), and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), as well as comparison with laminar and inviscid models. Mesh independence was also investigated, and solutions were compared with experimentally determined results and theoretical prediction, These research results show that, excepting the LES model for which the computational mesh was insufficiently refined and which was not extensively investigated, none of the turbulence models above, as implemented with the given numerical grid, generated a solution which was suitably comparable to the experimental data. Much more work is required to find a suitable combination of numerical grid and turbulence model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid Vortices is a comprehensive, up-to-date, research-level overview covering all salient flows in which fluid vortices play a significant role. The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive computational study of supersonic quasi-axisymmetric vortex breakdown in a configured circular duct is presented. The unsteady, compressible, full Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are used. The NS equations are solved for the quasi-axisymmetric flows using an implicit, upwind, flux difference splitting, finite volume scheme. The quasi-axisymmetric solutions are time accurate and are obtained by forcing the components of the flowfield vector to be equal on two axial planes, which are in close proximity of each other. The effect of Reynolds number, for laminar flows, on the evolution and persistence of vortex breakdown, is studied. Finally, the effect of swirl ration at the duct inlet is investigated. Book Synopsis Analysis and Control of Supersonic Vortex Breakdown Flows by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis and computation of steady, compressible, quasi-axisymmetric flow of an isolated, slender vortex are considered. The compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are reduced to a simpler set by using the slenderness and quasi-axisymmetry assumptions. The resulting set along with a compatibility equation are transformed from the diverging physical domain to a rectangular computational domain. Solving for a compatible set of initial profiles and specifying a compatible set of boundary conditions, the equations are solved using a type-differencing scheme. Vortex breakdown locations are detected by the failure of the scheme to converge. Computational examples include isolated vortex flows at different Mach numbers, external axial-pressure gradients and swirl ratios. Kandil, Osama A. Unspecified Center...
