It discusses three aspects: (i) Preparing, enhancing and evaluating one of the cuckoo search algorithms (CSA); (ii) Describing the problem: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) is used for non-invasive investigations of anatomical connectivity in the human brain, while Q-ball imaging (QBI) is a diffusion MRI reconstruction technique based on the orientation distribution function (ODF), which detects the dominant fiber orientations; however, ODF lacks local estimation accuracy along the path. (iii) Evaluating the performance of the CSA versions in solving the ODF problem using synthetic and real-world data. This book appeals to both postgraduates and researchers who are interested in the fields of medicine and computer science.

Book excerpt: Diffusion MRI remains the most comprehensive reference for understanding this rapidly evolving and powerful technology and is an essential handbook for designing, analyzing, and interpreting diffusion MR experiments. Diffusion imaging provides a unique window on human brain anatomy. This non-invasive technique continues to grow in popularity as a way to study brain pathways that could never before be investigated in vivo. This book covers the fundamental theory of diffusion imaging, discusses its most promising applications to basic and clinical neuroscience, and introduces cutting-edge methodological developments that will shape the field in coming years. Written by leading experts in the field, it places the exciting new results emerging from diffusion imaging in the context of classical anatomical techniques to show where diffusion studies might offer unique insights and where potential limitations lie. Fully revised and updated edition of the first comprehensive reference on a powerful technique in brain imaging Covers all aspects of a diffusion MRI study from acquisition through analysis to interpretation, and from fundamental theory to cutting-edge developments New chapters covering connectomics, advanced diffusion acquisition, artifact removal, and applications to the neonatal brain Provides practical advice on running an experiment Includes discussion of applications in psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, and basic neuroscience Full color throughout

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] Connectomics is a relatively new field which aims at mapping the whole brain connectivity network. The brain function comprehension is one of the main interests of neuroscience researchers in this century, as it remains unknown. The advantages of knowing the exact function of the brain and the mapping of all brain connections would be of immeasurable value. Connectomics aims at constructing the human brain network, analysing the connections between different areas of the brain, at a region level or at a neuron level. It is based on the acquisition of brain images with neuroimaging techniques and the processing of the data until the construction of brain connectivity maps. The complexity of the whole process, from the acquisition of images to the connectivity map construction, and the sensitivity to noise and errors in each step of the process causes a level of uncertainty in the results, as it is unclear how much accurate and precise they are. Tractography computation consists in the estimation of brain connectivity tracts. Brain tracts are the connections between different regions of the brain, and form the white matter tissue in the brain. The uncertainty in the tractography calculation is really high, and it causes a lack of reliability in the brain connectivity results. After analysing the uncertainty of different tractography results and observe the poor uniformity of results, we develop an expert system to achieve an automated selection of local trajectories. The expert system is created by applying a progressive perturbation of our acquired brain data, and analysing its effects on the tractography results. This analysis is performed locally, and consists in the extraction of some features. Afterwards, a decision model is trained with the extracted features to decide the optimal tractography algorithm in every part of the white matter tissue in the brain. The results, with a 77% of correlation with the evaluation criteria, provide a proof of concept that an automated system can be trained and developed to obtain an optimal local set of trajectories, highly correlated to human decisions.
