This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory and self-contained book gathers as much explicit mathematical results on the linear-elastic and heat-conduction solutions in the neighborhood of singular points in two-dimensional domains, and singular edges and vertices in three-dimensional domains. These are presented in an engineering terminology for practical usage. The author treats the mathematical formulations from an engineering viewpoint and presents high-order finite-element methods for the computation of singular solutions in isotropic and anisotropic materials, and multi-material interfaces. The proper interpretation of the results in engineering practice is advocated, so that the computed data can be correlated to experimental observations. The book is divided into fourteen chapters, each containing several sections. Most of it (the first nine Chapters) addresses two-dimensional domains, where only singular points exist. The solution in a vicinity of these points admits an asymptotic expansion composed of eigenpairs and associated generalized flux/stress intensity factors (GFIFs/GSIFs), which are being computed analytically when possible or by finite element methods otherwise. Singular points associated with weakly coupled thermoelasticity in the vicinity of singularities are also addressed and thermal GSIFs are computed. The computed data is important in engineering practice for predicting failure initiation in brittle material on a daily basis. Several failure laws for two-dimensional domains with V-notches are presented and their validity is examined by comparison to experimental observations. A sufficient simple and reliable condition for predicting failure initiation (crack formation) in micron level electronic devices, involving singular points, is still a topic of active research and interest, and is addressed herein. Explicit singular solutions in the vicinity of vertices and edges in three-dimensional domains are provided in the remaining five chapters. New methods for the computation of generalized edge flux/stress intensity functions along singular edges are presented and demonstrated by several example problems from the field of fracture mechanics; including anisotropic domains and bimaterial interfaces. Circular edges are also presented and the author concludes with some remarks on open questions. This well illustrated book will appeal to both applied mathematicians and engineers working in the field of fracture mechanics and singularities.

Book excerpt: This book develops a class of graded finite element methods to solve singular elliptic boundary value problems in two- and three-dimensional domains. It provides an approachable and self-contained presentation of the topic, including both the mathematical theory and numerical tools necessary to address the major challenges imposed by the singular solution. Moreover, by focusing upon second-order equations with constant coefficients, it manages to derive explicit results that are accessible to the broader computation community. Although written with mathematics graduate students and researchers in mind, this book is also relevant to applied and computational mathematicians, scientists, and engineers in numerical methods who may encounter singular problems.

Particular attention is given to error estimators and indicators for structural analysis. The accent is on the concept of error in constitutive relation. An important part of the work is also devoted to the utilization of the error estimators involved in a calculation, beginning with the parameters related to the mesh. Many of the topics are taken from the most recent research by the authors: local error estimators, extention of the concept of error in constitutive relation to nonlinear evolution problems and dynamic problems, adaptive improvement of calculations in nonlinear mechanics. This work is intended for all those interested in mechanics: students, researchers and engineers concerned with the construction of models as well as their simulation for industrial purposes.

The book collects, for the first time, selected articles from the 21st and most recent IFIP TC 7 conference in Sophia Antipolis, France. Applied mathematicians and computer scientists can attest to the ever-growing influence of these two subjects. The practical applications of system modeling and optimization can be seen in a number of fields: environmental science, transport and telecommunications, image analysis, free boundary problems, bioscience, and non-cylindrical evolution control, to name just a few. New developments in each of these fields have contributed to a more complex understanding of both system modeling and optimization. Editors John Cagnol and Jean-Paul Zolésio, chairs of the conference, have assembled System Modeling and Optimization to present the most up-to-date developments to professionals and academics alike.

Book excerpt: The analysis and simulation of multifield problems have recently become one of the most actual and vivid areas of research. Although the individual subproblems of complex technical and physical phenomena often are understood separately, their interaction and coupling create not only new difficulties but also a complete new level and quality of interacting coupled field problems. Presented by leading experts this book includes recent results in these fields from the International Conference on Multifield Problems, April 8-10, 2002 at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in the series "Mathematics in Industrial Prob lems." The motivation for these volumes is to foster interaction between Industry and Mathematics at the "grass roots"; that is, at the level of spe cific problems. These problems come from Industry: they arise from models developed by the industrial scientists in ventures directed at the manufac ture of new or improved products. At the same time, these problems have the potential for mathematical challenge and novelty. To identify such problems, I have visited industries and had discussions with their scientists. Some of the scientists have subsequently presented their problems in the IMA seminar on Industrial Problems. The book is based on questions raised in the seminar and subsequent discussions. Each chapter is devoted to one of the talks and is self-contained. The chap ters usually provide references to the mathematical literature and a list of open problems which are of interest to the industrial scientists. For some problems partial solution is indicated briefly. The last chapter of the book contains a short description of solutions to some of the problems raised in the second volume, as well as references to papers in which such solutions have been published.

Book excerpt: This book contains some of the results presented at the mini-symposium titled Emerging Problems in the Homogenization of Partial Differential Equations, held during the ICIAM2019 conference in Valencia in July 2019. The papers cover a large range of topics, problems with weak regularity data involving renormalized solutions, eigenvalue problems for complicated shapes of the domain, homogenization of partial differential problems with strongly alternating boundary conditions of Robin type with large parameters, multiscale analysis of the potential action along a neuron with a myelinated axon, and multi-scale model of magnetorheological suspensions. The volume is addressed to scientists who deal with complex systems that presents several elements (characteristics, constituents...) of very different scales, very heterogeneous, and search for homogenized models providing an effective (macroscopic) description of their behaviors.
