This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-life transportation systems are subject to numerous uncertainties in their operation. Researchers have suggested various reliability measures to characterize their network-level performances. One of these measures is given by travel time reliability, defined as the probability that travel times remain below certain (acceptable) levels. Existing reliability assessment (and optimization) techniques tend to be computationally intensive. In this dissertation we develop computationally efficient alternatives. In particular, we make the following three contributions. In the first contribution, we present a novel reliability assessment methodology when the source of uncertainty is given by road capacities. More specifically, we present a method based on the theory of Fourier transforms to numerically approximate the probability density function of the (system-wide) travel time. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the established computational efficiency of the fast Fourier transform. In the second contribution, we relax the common assumption that probability distributions of the sources of uncertainties are known explicitly. In reality, this distribution may be unavailable (or inaccurate) as we may have no (or insufficient) data to calibrate the distributions. We present a new method to assess travel time reliability that is distribution-free in the sense that the methodology only requires that the first N moments (where N is any positive integer) of the travel time to be known and that the travel times reside in a set of known and bounded intervals. Instead of deriving exact probabilities on travel times exceeding certain thresholds via computationally intensive methods, we develop analytical probability inequalities to quickly obtain upper bounds on the desired probability. Because of the computationally intensive nature of (virtually all) existing reliability assessment techniques, the optimization of the reliability of transportation systems has generally been computationally prohibitive. The third and final contribution of this dissertation is the introduction of a new transportation network design model in which the objective is to minimize the unreliability of travel time. The computational requirements are shown to be much lower due to the assessment techniques developed in this dissertation. Moreover, numerical results suggest that it has the potential to form a computationally efficient proxy for current simulation-based network design models.

Book excerpt: As with other transportation methods, safety issues in aircraft can result in a total loss of life. Recently, the air transport industry has come under immense scrutiny after several deaths occurred due to aircraft design and airlines that allowed improperly inspected aircraft to fly. Spacecraft too have found errors in system software that could lead to catastrophic failure. It is imperative that the aviation and aerospace industries continue to revise and refine safety protocols from the construction and design of aircraft, to secure and improve aviation systems, and to test and inspect aircraft. The Research Anthology on Reliability and Safety in Aviation Systems, Spacecraft, and Air Transport is a vital reference source that examines the latest scholarly material on the use of adaptive and assistive technologies in aviation to establish clear guidelines for the design and implementation of such technologies to better serve the needs of both military and civilian pilots. It also covers new information technology use in aviation systems to streamline the cybersecurity, decision making, planning, and design processes within the aviation industry. Highlighting a range of topics such as air navigation systems, computer simulation, and airline operations, this multi-volume book is ideally designed for pilots, scientists, engineers, aviation operators, air traffic controllers, air crash investigators, teachers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. This is achieved by (1) developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions that distort the network structure and (2) planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. In this monograph, we propose a framework, develop mathematical models and provide examples of fail-safe supply network design. We show that, contrary to current thinking as embodied in the supply network literature, disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are not independent from variation management decisions made at the operational level. Accordingly, we suggest that it is beneficial to manage disruptions and variations concurrently in supply networks. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by the following elements: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework presented in this monograph to manage variations and disruptions. Managers can select the best operational management strategies for their supply networks considering variations in supply and demand, and identify the best network restoration strategies including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework is generalizable to other complex engineered networks.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the probabilistic description of the behavior of a network in the process of random removal of its components (links, nodes) appearing as a result of technical failures, natural disasters or intentional attacks. It is focused on a practical approach to network reliability and resilience evaluation, based on applications of Monte Carlo methodology to numerical approximation of network combinatorial invariants, including so-called multidimensional destruction spectra. This allows to develop a probabilistic follow-up analysis of the network in the process of its gradual destruction, to identify most important network components and to develop efficient heuristic algorithms for network optimal design. Our methodology works with satisfactory accuracy and efficiency for most applications of reliability theory to real –life problems in networks.

Book excerpt: The final report of the National Research Council's (NRC) Panel on Statistical Methods for Testing and Evaluating Defense Systems (National Research Council, 1998) was intended to provide broad advice to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) on current statistical methods and principles that could be applied to the developmental and operational testing and evaluation of defense systems. To that end, the report contained chapters on the use of testing as a tool of system development; current methods of experimental design; evaluation methods; methods for testing and assessing reliability, availability, and maintainability; software development and testing; and validation of modeling and simulation for use in operational test and evaluation. While the examination of such a wide variety of topics was useful in helping DoD understand the breadth of problems for which statistical methods could be applied and providing direction as to how the methods currently used could be improved, there was, quite naturally, a lack of detail in each area. To address the need for further detail, two DoD agencies-the Office of the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics-asked the NRC's Committee on National Statistics to initiate a series of workshops on statistical issues relevant to defense acquisition. The aim of each workshop is to inform DoD about the methods that represent the statistical state of the art and, through interactions of the statistical and defense communities, explore their relevance for DoD application.
