Book excerpt: Co-authored by an international research group with a long-standing cooperation, this book focuses on engineering-oriented electromagnetic and thermal field modeling and application. It presents important contributions, including advanced and efficient finite element analysis used in the solution of electromagnetic and thermal field problems for large and multi-scale engineering applications involving application script development; magnetic measurement of both magnetic materials and components under various, even extreme conditions, based on well-established (standard and non-standard) experimental systems; and multi-level validation based on both industrial test systems and extended TEAM P21 benchmarking platform. Although these are challenging topics, they are useful for readers from both academia and industry.

Book excerpt: During the last decade a new generation of software tools has evolved in computational electromagnetics. Both analyti cal methods and particularly numerical techniques have improved considerably, leading to an extended range of capabilities and an increased applicability of both dedicated and general purpose computer codes. It is the intention of this volume to review the state of the art in electromagnetic analysis and design, and to describe the fundamentals and the advances in theoreti cal/numerical approaches coupled with practical solutions for static and time-dependent fields. In this context, the book illustrates the effectiveness of numerical techniques and associated computer codes in solving real electromagnetic field problems. In addition, it demonstrates the usefulness of modern codes for the analysis of many industrial practical cases. In particular, solutions of magnetostatic and magnetodynamic problems applied to electrical machines, induction heating, non destructive testing, fusion reactor technology and other industrial are presented and discussed. The present volume reflects and combines the lectures which are organized in the frame of the Eurocourse programme at JRC Ispra under the sponsorship of the Institute for Sys tems Engineering and Informatics (ISEI). It is hoped that in this context the Institute and particularly the Systems Engineering & Reliability (SER) Division can play a stimulating role in sponsoring and promoting the diffusion of knowledge in novel areas of computer and information science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Applications of BEM to electromagnetic problems are comparatively new although the method is ideally suited to solve these problems, which usually involve unbounded domains. The present volume comprises contributions by eminent researchers working on applications of boundary elements in electromagnetic problems. The volume deals with the solutions of Maxwell's equation for three-dimensional as well as two-dimensional cases. It also discusses combination of BEM with FEM particularly in the case of saturated media. Some chapters specifically deal with the design of electromagnetic devices. The book is essential reading to those engineers and scientists, who are interested in the state of the art for electrical and electromagnetic application of boundary elements. It is also an important reference for those engineers who are working on the design of electromagnetic components many of which can be advantageously carried out using BEM.

Book excerpt: For well over a decade, the numerical approach to field computation has been gaining progressively greater importance. Analytical methods offield compu tation are, at best, unable to accommodate the very wide variety of configura tions in which fields must be computed. On the other hand, numerical methods can accommodate many practical configurations that analytical methods cannot. With the advent of high-speed digital computers, numerical field computations have finally become practical. However, in order to implement numerical methods of field computation, we need algorithms, numerical methods, and mathematical tools that are largely quite different from those that have been traditionally used with analytical methods. Many of these algorithms have, in fact, been presented in the large number of papers that have been published on this subject in the last two decades. And to some of those who are already experienced in the art of numerical field computations, these papers, in addition to their own original work, are enough to give them the knowledge that they need to perform practical numerical field computations.

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Third International Conference and Exhibition on Engineering Software held at Imperial College, London during the period April 11th - 13th, 1983. I must thank again the authors who submitted the large numbers of papers which made selection a difficult task. The theme of the conference is the use and application of computers in engineering. Many abbreviations have been invented to describe the use of computers from CAD, CAM, CADMAT etc. but the term which best describes the scope of the conference is Computer Aided Engineering, CAE. The papers have been split into sections covering different application areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering. Other sections cover techniques such as Finite Elements, Boundary Elements and General Simu lation. An important session at the conference was the new field of engineering databases and as in past conferences the special sessions were devoted to microcomputers. R.A. Kovacic Institute of Structural and Earthquake Engineering Department of Civil Engineering University "Edvard Kardelj" of Ljubljana, Yugoslavia INTRODUCTION Although fortran Is losing competition with the new languages it Is still very used programming language, especially in the technical software production. Technical tasks are not to be described by a lot of data usually, as in business applications.

Book excerpt: This volume (Parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation held at the University of California - San Diego, La Jolla, CA, on August 1-5, 1988. The Review was organized by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory of the U. S. Department of Energy in cooperation with the Air Force Materials Laboratory, the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, the Office of Naval Research, the NASA-Langley Research Center, and The Metallurgical Society (TMS). Yith a total of over 450 participants from the US and nine foreign countries who presented a record 325 papers, this conference has grown into the largest, most significant gathering of NDE researchers and engineers anywhere in the Yest. The meeting was divided into 36 sessions with as many as four sessions running concurrently. All stages of NDE development from basic research investigations to early engineering applications and all methods of inspection science from ultrasonics to x-ray tomography were covered. Following a pattern now familiar to regular attendees of the Review and readers of the Proceedings, the editors have organized the papers in the Proceedings according to topical subject headings rather than the original order of presentation. This rearrangement yields a more user friendly reference work. Part A of the Proceedings treats NDE technique development whereas Part B is organized around the theme of materials.

Book excerpt: This book proposes systemic design methodologies applied to electrical energy systems, in particular integrated optimal design with modeling and optimization methods and tools. It is made up of six chapters dedicated to integrated optimal design. First, the signal processing of mission profiles and system environment variables are discussed. Then, optimization-oriented analytical models, methods and tools (design frameworks) are proposed. A “multi-level optimization” smartly coupling several optimization processes is the subject of one chapter. Finally, a technico-economic optimization especially dedicated to electrical grids completes the book. The aim of this book is to summarize design methodologies based in particular on a systemic viewpoint, by considering the system as a whole. These methods and tools are proposed by the most important French research laboratories, which have many scientific partnerships with other European and international research institutions. Scientists and engineers in the field of electrical engineering, especially teachers/researchers because of the focus on methodological issues, will find this book extremely useful, as will PhD and Masters students in this field.
