This book was released on 1999-07-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compound semiconductors, such as GaAs and InP, typically have relatively high surface recombination velocities compared to silicon, and are subject to disruption of the surface during device processing. These two themes formed the basis for the April 1999 symposium. The 34 papers are divided into five broad topics areas: fundamentals of surfaces and their passivation, novel approaches for surface passivation and device processing, the structural, transport and optical properties of oxides, compound semiconductor surface passivation and novel device processing, and electronic devices and processing. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of activity in the field of passivation and control of compound semiconductor surfaces and associated novel processing techniques for electronic and photonic devices. The markets for GaAs and InP-based electronics cover wireless communication, mobile phones, defense applications where radiation-hardness is critical, automobile collision avoidance radar and satellites. On the photonics side, displays, communications systems, infrared and UV detectors and lighting applications are prime markets. In all of these devices there is a critical need for control of the surface properties and for reliable long-term encapsulation/passivation of the surface. Compound semiconductors typically have relatively high surface recombination velocities and novel processing methods which minimize surface damage are, therefore, extremely important. Surface passivation and novel device processing form the basis for the book. Topics include: fundamentals of surfaces and their passivation; novel approaches for surface passivation and device processing; oxides - structural, transport and optical properties; compound semiconductor surface passivation and novel device processing and electronic devices and processing.

Book Synopsis Multicomponent Oxide Films for Electronics: Volume 574 by : Marilyn Hawley
Download or read book Multicomponent Oxide Films for Electronics: Volume 574 written by Marilyn Hawley and published by . This book was released on 1999-10-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exceptional properties of multicomponent oxides, combined with the inability of simpler materials to meet the increasing demands of the electronics industry, have motivated tremendous interest and activity in utilizing multicomponent oxides for electronic applications. For these applications, it is often desirable to integrate complex oxides in thin-film form with other materials. This book focuses on common materials issues involved in the processing and characterization of multicomponent oxides and how these issues relate to device applications. Papers range from theoretical explanations of the magnetic and electronic properties of transition metal oxides, to integration with silicon technology. Noteworthy is the progress being made in the deposition and characterization of these complex materials, as well as their applicability in ferroelectric memories, MOSFETs, optical devices, infrared imaging arrays, etc. Topics include: epitaxial multicomponent oxide film growth; properties, characterization and modeling; properties of multicomponent oxides; and multicomponent oxide devices.

Book Synopsis GaN and Related Alloys - 1999: Volume 595 by : Thomas H. Myers
Download or read book GaN and Related Alloys - 1999: Volume 595 written by Thomas H. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2000-05-05 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on gallium nitride (GaN) and associated materials focuses on advances in basic science, as well as the rapidly maturing technologies involving blue/green light emitters, detectors and high-power electronics. A highlight is a report on wide-bandgap semiconductor research done in Europe. Also reported is the commercialization of a laser operating at 405nm wavelength with a 4000-hour device lifetime. At 450nm emission wavelength, significant reductions in lifetime were found, and are believed to arise from nonideal properties of the InGaN alloy used in the active layer of the device. Additional topics include: the significant success of transistors for microwave applications; improvements in the epitaxy of GaN, using both selective area growth techniques (lateral epitaxy overgrowth) and introducing low-temperature intralayers in the films; advances in both molecular beam epitaxy and metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, including several studies of quantum dot formation in strained alloys and improvements in hydride vapor phase epitaxy, particularly for providing very thick films.
Book Synopsis Luminescent Materials: Volume 560 by : Joanna McKittrick
Download or read book Luminescent Materials: Volume 560 written by Joanna McKittrick and published by . This book was released on 1999-09-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luminescent materials are of interest to members of the spectroscopic, basic science, engineering and display communities. This book presents a wide range of topics from basic research of fluorescence to applications-driven research on phosphors and scintillators. Papers on various luminescent, fluorescent or phosphorescent mechanisms arising in inorganic crystalline and noncrystalline materials, as well as in organic materials, are featured. The use of fluorescence as a sensing technique has emerged as a sensitive and noninvasive way to probe biological activity or measure physical phenomena. To that end, progress in understanding fluorescence, the development of novel applications of fluorescence, and novel material structures are addressed. Phosphors for the emerging flat-panel-display industry are also highlighted. Topics include: inorganic phosphors; thin-film phosphors; synthesis, processing and characterization; mechanisms and defects; organic luminescence and theory and luminescence sensors.
Book Synopsis Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices: Volume 559 by : Timothy J. Bunning
Download or read book Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices: Volume 559 written by Timothy J. Bunning and published by . This book was released on 1999-08-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal (LC) materials and devices play a central role in numerous established and emerging technologies. This book focuses on several large areas of research including polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology and twisted smectic materials and applications, as well as nontraditional LC materials and applications. Various aspects of liquid crystal composite technology are featured. Of note is the work concentrating on the use of holography to imprint information into thin films of these systems. Three different approaches for employing holography with liquid crystal materials are discussed. In the ferroelectric liquid crystal arena, the intricacies of different chiral smectic-C architectures are described using detailed X-ray structural experiments on freestanding films. The differences between a molecule and a phase are explored. A number of nondisplay applications using this class of materials are presented and include topics such as adaptive optics, real-time holography and fiber-to-fiber interconnects. Also discussed are glass-forming liquid crystalline films and their ability to polarize photoluminescent emission, their utility in the fabrication of mid-wavelength infrared polarizers, and their utility in the fabrication of bistable electro-optical elements and broadband reflectors.

First came the development of the chemical vapor deposition of diamond, followed by the discovery of a new class of molecules - the fullerenes. Carbon nanotubes were discovered and techniques were developed to deposit new phases of amorphous carbon containing mainly sp3 bonding. This book brings together scientists and engineers from all areas of carbon research, both sp2 and sp3 bonded, from the fully amorphous to nanostructured carbon, to the highly ordered nanotubes. It covers a range of subjects including the synthesis and properties of nanotubes, as well as diamond-like carbon deposition and properties. Applications range from nanotubes for hydrogen storage, to electrochemical double-layer capacitors (supercapacitors), field emission displays, hard coatings, and carbon coatings for magnetic storage technology. The book deals with the growth, characterization, properties and applications of nanotubes and field emission from all varieties of carbon, amorphous and diamond-like carbon- growth, properties and applications. It also contains papers on diamond, silicon carbide, carbon nitride and beryllium films.
