Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compotus Rolls of the Priory of Worcester of the Xivth and Xvth Centuries Canon Wilson, Chapter of Worcester owes the arrangement, one might say the rehabilitation, of its long neglected archives, has already printed two series of the Compotus or Account Rolls of the officials of Worcester Cathedral Priory, belonging respectively to the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, together with a few Cellarers Rolls of the fourteenth. The present volume contains similar accounts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In selecting them, my object has been to exhibit at least one specimen of a Roll of every one of the Obedientiaries of the Priory, at dates ranging from 1326 to 1493; in some cases two or more of the same official are given. The Priors Rolls I have not touched: they seem to me, as far as I can judge from the perusal of the earliest of them, that of Prior John de Evesham (1341), and a less careful examination of some others, to be of quite a different character from the rest. Prior Mildenham (1499 1506)decreed that the Priors Roll should contain in a compendious form not only his own accounts, but those of all the officials besides: and the result of his decree we see in the Roll of Prior More printed by Canon Wilson in 1907. That is the type of all the Priors Rolls from Mildenham stime onwards: they exhibit a conspectus of the finances of the whole Community. Evesham sRoll on the other hand seems rather to be his bill against the Convent for expenditure which he considers ought to be repaid him; and the Rolls of the later Priors, down to Mildenham, appear to be concerned only with extraordinary expenses, on such occasions as their own installation, or a royal or episcopal visit. These would doubtless be of great interest, but seem to require separate treatment. In transcribing I have followed the spelling of the Mss., but I have expressed all numbers in Arabic numerals. It is said of Lord Burghley that throughout his life he found it easier to read such a sum as Miiijciij vij. xvjy. d.ob. q., so written, than if it were expressed as 1, 467 i6s. zd. To us the notation which he preferred seems to reduce all calculation to mental arithmetic; but it must be remembered that it is the notation used throughout these accounts, as in all accounts of the same period. Perhaps this fact may excuse the numerous errors in addition which may be found in the rolls, to some of which I have called attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examinations of the culture - artistic, material, musical - of English monasteries in the six centuries between the Conquest and the Dissolution. The cultural remains of England's abbeys and priories have always attracted scholarly attention but too often they have been studied in isolation, appreciated only for their artistic, codicological or intellectual features and notfor the insights they offer into the patterns of life and thought - the underlying norms, values and mentalité - of the communities of men and women which made them. Indeed, the distinguished monastic historian David Knowles doubted there would ever be sufficient evidence to recover "the mentality of the ordinary cloister monk". These twelve essays challenge this view. They exploit newly catalogued and newly discovered evidence - manuscript books, wall paintings, and even the traces of original monastic music - to recover the cultural dynamics of a cross-section of male and female communities. It is often claimed that over time the cultural traditions of the monasteries were suffocated by secular trends but here it is suggested that many houses remained a major cultural force even on the verge of the Reformation. James G. Clark is Professor of History at the University of Exeter. Contributors: DAVID BELL, ROGER BOWERS, JAMES CLARK, BARRIE COLLETT, MARY ERLER, G. R. EVANS, MIRIAM GILL, JOAN GREATREX, JULIAN HASELDINE, J. D. NORTH, ALAN PIPER, AND R. M. THOMSON.

Book excerpt: Between 1200 and 1520 medieval English society went through a series of upheavals: this was an age of war, pestilence and rebellion. This book explores the realities of life of the people who lived through those stirring times. It looks in turn at aristocrats, peasants, townsmen, wage-earners and paupers, and examines how they obtained their incomes and how they spent them. This revised edition (1998) includes a substantial new concluding chapter and an updated bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Monastic Renaissance at St Albans is a study of intellectual life at the abbey of St Albans - one of Britain's greatest Benedictine monasteries - during the lifetime of Thomas Walsingham (c.1340-1422), one of the most prolific scholars of the later middle ages. It has always been assumed that the monasteries fell into decline long before the dissolution and that cultural and intellectual activities were largely abandoned as the monks surrendered themselves to high living and low morals. This study challenges this view. Drawing on a wide variety of manuscript sources, it shows that education, independent study, and even the co-ordinated copying of books continued to flourish at St Albans (and its affiliate houses) for much of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In fact the abbey emerged as one of the country's most influential centres of learning, a clearing-house for books and ideas in Ricardian and Lancastrian England. Thomas Walsingham himself played a key part in this renaissance in monastic studies; his works were copied and circulated throughout the St Albans network and his influence acted upon the next generation of monastic readers and writers. Walsingham was not only a compiler of contemporary chronicles but also a Classical scholar of extraordinary originality. His commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses, his re-working of the histories of Alexander of Macedon and the Trojan War, and his Genealogia deorum gentilium, are discussed in detail here for the first time. Walsingham's interest in the Classics was shared by many of his St Albans colleagues, and they in turn were members of a wider circle of literary scholars, which included the London schoolmaster, John Seward. The work of these scholars, monastic and secular, points towards a revival of Classical and literary scholarship in England long before Italian humanism and other traces of the continental Renaissance first found their way into the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history and underlying ideology of pilgrimage examined, from prehistory to the middle ages. The enduring importance of pilgrimage as an expression of human longing is explored in this volume through three major themes: the antiquity of pilgrimage in what became the Christian world; the mechanisms of Christian pilgrimage(particularly in relation to the practicalities of the journey and the workings of the shrine); and the fluidity and adaptability of pilgrimage ideology. In their examination of pilgrimage as part of western culture from neolithictimes onwards, the authors make use of a range of approaches, often combining evidence from a number of sources, including anthropology, archaeology, history, folklore, margin illustrations and wall paintings; they suggest that it is the fluidity of pilgrimage ideology, combined with an adherence to supposedly traditional physical observances, which has succeeded in maintaining its relevance and retaining its identity. They also look at the ways in whichpilgrimage spilled into, or rather was part of, secular life in the middle ages. Dr JENNIE STOPFORD teaches in the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of York. Contributors: RICHARD BRADLEY, E.D. HUNT, JULIEANN SMITH, SIMON BARTON, WENDY R. CHILDS, BEN NILSON, KATHERINE J. LEWIS, DEBRA J. BIRCH, SIMON COLEMAN, JOHN ELSNER, A. M. KOLDEWEIJ.
