What he feels he makes known; as soon as he can talk, he tells all he knows. If he is happy, he laughs; if he is sad, he cries. Only older folks learn to inhibit their thoughts and to conceal what goes on in the heart and brain. In other words; man is a reacting organism, and ex pression is the reactive phase of mental life. It is the only evidence we have that there is mental life, and is the sole measure of a man's power and useful ness in the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition in Elementary Schools A boy learns to plow by plowing; he learns to write by writing. Instead of having him memorize rules and definitions with regard to writing we should let him learn their application by practice. The one aim of the teacher should be the rousing of the pupil's interest. This can be done only by finding some means of appealing to his personal experience. The first means to be employed in the teaching of composition should be conversations with the children about things which they have seen or about incidents which they have experienced. The children should be encouraged to engage freely in these conversations - to tell about things they have seen, and to tell their experiences. The next step might be the telling and reading of stories. These stories should be made topics of conversations, and the pupils required to reproduce them in their own words as fully as possible. The stories may be taken from history, travels and biography; but fables and fairy stories should not be neglected; they are, in most instances, the best of all. The active imaginations of the children demand them. In addition to these fables and stories the beautiful myths of olden times can be made both profitable and interesting. While these various stories, fables and myths are being used as means for teaching the first steps in composition, selections from our best authors can be made to subserve the same purpose. There are scores and scores of little verses that could be used as memory gems and topics of conversation in the composition work of the lower grades. Take, for example, the poem beginning with, "What does little birdie say In her nest at break of day?" by Alfred Tennyson About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This difference of level is Of itself sufficient explanation of the repetitions, but there remains another reason - the positive need of doing the same thing again and again in order to fix it in the pupil's intelligence and to make it automatic in his use of language. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Outlines for Composition The purpose of this book is to provide, for the use of teachers in elementary schools, a fund of materials for composition, to supplement those in the authorized text-books. The author has tried to write the stories, many of which will be recognized as old and familiar friends, in a form that will be suitable to the capacity of the pupils for whom they are designed. The picture stories are developed from pictures that are familiar and easily obtainable, many of them appearing in text-books in Composition in use in the schools. The outlines, which appear in the latter part of the book, are based upon topics which will be easily adjusted to the interests of the pupils. A few of these outlines are derived from well-known stories and poems, which frequently appear in school Readers, and which, in any event, are easily accessible to teachers. It is hoped that the brief suggestions as to method will be found useful in the presentation of the materials to pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standards in English a Course of Study in Oral and Written Composition for Elementary Schools The beginning of this investigation (to discover a standard for the elementary schools) was made from a negative viewpoint. Following a conference with the teachers of freshman English, in which the purpose of the investigation was talked over at length, a questionnaire was sent to them. They were asked to state very concretely the important weaknesses found most conspicuously on freshman papers. They understood that they were to set down those weaknesses which, by their very nature, branded an English paper as unsatisfactory from the point of view of a teacher of freshman English. Conversely, of course, it followed that the absence of the weaknesses set down would mean work satisfactory from the same viewpoint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital English First Book Elementary Composition The authors have chosen the title Vital English advisedly. The primary aim has been to make the work alive - close to the real needs of the youth of the present day. Added to this constant appeal to the interests of the children is the method of presentation. A clear, logical development of units of thought, with an abundance of illustrative and drill exercises, makes the progress steady and the knowledge thus acquired usable and cumulative. Only the most important and absolutely essential units of thought have been selected for study. Some of the newer phases of thought which are more and more coming to be recognized as having a place in the study of English have been used in the series of lessons on "Community Helpers" and "Dramatizing." A helpful correlation with history, geography, science, and other related school subjects is shown in the lessons on "How Books Came to Be" and "Lessons from Nature." In brief, we aim 1. To appeal to the vital, essential interests of children. 2. To develop units of thought in clear, logical order. 3. To provide ample material for study or for written exercises. Download or read book Elementary English Composition (Classic Reprint) written by Fred Newton Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary English Composition The indifference of younger classes in the secondary schools to their English composition is due to a variety of causes, of which three are worthy of special considera tion. In_ the first place, there is a lack of novelty in present methods of teaching the subject. The kind of work that is usually prescribed for such classes seems to the pupils to be a mere repetition of what they have tried over and over again in the lower grades. The grammar review, for instance, which confronts them on the threshold of the secondary course, is usually nothing more than a re-view, affording them no new view of their English, and calling for the exercise of no new form of ingenuity that might enlist their interest. In the second place, one side of the pupil's training in English, and a most important side, is at this stage of his progress almost entirely neglected. The forces which urge young persons to express themselves with tongue or pen are partly individual, partly social, partly impulses from within, partly solicitations from without. Pupils com pose most naturally and most successfully when the two forces are in equilibration. But at the beginning of secondary instruction it is not uncommon for the teacher to rely upon the inward stimulus alone. He does not lead his pupils to think of the other man for whom they are writing or speaking. He leaves them in the attitude, and the spirits, of soldiers who are firing their ammunition into the void. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition in the School-Room While the need of practical instruction in every other department of education has been felt, ability to write good English has been vaguely ascribed to a special gift; and consequently but little attention has been paid to the training of the faculties in this direction. But education can do as much for the child in teaching him how to write, as in giving him a knowledge of figures; and instruction should not be neglected on account of a seeming lack of natural aptitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary English Grammar and Composition, for Use in Public Schools In the treatment of Syntax, the book contains numer ous examples of inaccuracies in English, selected with a view to test the knowledge and exercise the ingenuity of the pupil. This part of Grammar, partly from the defect in our text-books, has not received, hitherto, that prominence which its importance demands. As every pupil attending our Public Schools should have a fair mastery of English in writing, the elements of Composition have been introduced, and such suggestions given as will guide the teacher and aid the pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Composition Through Analysis and Synthesis: A d104 Book for the Senior Classes of Elementary Schools and for Pupil-Teachers AS a means of teaching composition and the principles that 'govern sentence structure, analysis of sentences has completely broken down and become, outside the teaching profession, entirely discredited. Pupils parse and parse, analyse and analyse, for years of their school life, and in the end are ignorant of what constitutes a good sentence and wholly without ability to write one. The cause of this unsatisfactory result is not, I think, difficult to dis cover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Composition Composition and grammar are very intimately bound together. In the earlier years of a school course, they are generally considered as one subject, - language; but in the later years they are pursued as separate subjects. Among educators there is a difference of opinion regarding the time when composition and grammar should be taught. One group, and that the larger, drop the regular study of composition when the study of grammar begins. This may be in the sixth, seventh, or eighth year of a school course, - rarely as late as the eighth. They aver that there is not time to pursue both grammar and composition; and as grammar must be finished before the high school period, composition, except the writing of occasional essays, must be dropped. They say, too, that while studying grammar, a child is learning composition; for familiarity with the principles governing a language is a direct and positive influence leading to correct expression. The second group hold that a knowledge of the grammar of a language is a great aid to expression; but that expression is not best learned through grammar alone.
