Book excerpt: The application of quantitative reliability evaluation in electric power sys tems has now evolved to the point at which most utilities use these techniques in one or more areas of their planning, design, and operation. Most of the techniques in use are based on analytical models and resulting analytical evaluation procedures. Improvements in and availability of high-speed digi tal computers have created the opportunity to analyze many of these prob lems using stochastic simulation methods and over the last decade there has been increased interest in and use made of Monte Carlo simulation in quantitative power system reliability assessment. Monte Carlo simulation is not a new concept and recorded applications have existed for at least 50 yr. However, localized high-speed computers with large-capacity storage have made Monte Carlo simulation an available and sometimes preferable option for many power system reliability applications. Monte Carlo simulation is also an integral part of a modern undergrad uate or graduate course on reliability evaluation of general engineering systems or specialized areas such as electric power systems. It is hoped that this textbook will help formalize the many existing applications of Monte Carlo simulation and assist in their integration in teaching programs. This book presents the basic concepts associated with Monte Carlo simulation.

Book excerpt: We are very pleased to be asked to co-author this book for a variety of reasons, one of which was that it gave us further opportunity to work together. The scope proposed was very wide with the only significant proviso being that the book should be in a mongraph-style and not a teaching text. This require ment has given us the opportunity to compile a wide range of relevant material relating to present-day knowledge and application in power system reliability. As many readers will be aware, we have collaborated in many ways over a relatively long period and have co-authored two other books on reliability evaluation. Both of these previous books were structured as teaching texts. This present book is not a discourse on "how to do reliability evaluation" but a discussion on "why it should be done and what can be done and achieved" and as such does not replace or conflict with the previous books. The three books are complementary and each enhances the others. The material contained in this book is not specifically original since it is based on information which we have published in other forms either jointly or as co authors with various other people, particularly our many research students. We sincerely acknowledge the important contributions made by all these students and colleagues. There are too many to mention individually in this preface but their names appear frequently in the references at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Most books on reliability theory are devoted to traditional binary reliability models allowing for only two possible states for a system and its components: perfect functionality and complete failure. However, many real-world systems are composed of multi-state components, which have different performance levels and several failure modes with various effects on the entire system performance (degradation). Such systems are called Multi-State Systems (MSS). The examples of MSS are power systems where the component performance is characterized by the generating capacity, computer systems where the component performance is characterized by the data processing speed, communication systems, etc. This book is the first to be devoted to Multi-State System (MSS) reliability analysis and optimization. It provides a historical overview of the field, presents basic concepts of MSS, defines MSS reliability measures, and systematically describes the tools for MSS reliability assessment and optimization. Basic methods for MSS reliability assessment, such as a Boolean methods extension, basic random process methods (both Markov and semi-Markov) and universal generating function models, are systematically studied. A universal genetic algorithm optimization technique and all details of its application are described. All the methods are illustrated by numerical examples. The book also contains many examples of application of reliability assessment and optimization methods to real engineering problems. The aim of this book is to give a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of MSS reliability theory based on modern advances in this field and provide a theoretical summary and examples of engineering applications to a variety of technical problems. From this point of view the book bridges the gap between theoretical advances and practical reliability engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of power system reliability is demonstrated when our electricity supply is disrupted, whether it decreases the comfort of our free time at home or causes the shutdown of our companies and results in huge economic deficits. The objective of Assessment of Power System Reliability is to contribute to the improvement of power system reliability. It consists of six parts divided into twenty chapters. The first part introduces the important background issues that affect power system reliability. The second part presents the reliability methods that are used for analyses of technical systems and processes. The third part discusses power flow analysis methods, because the dynamic aspect of a power system is an important part of related reliability assessments. The fourth part explores various aspects of the reliability assessment of power systems and their parts. The fifth part covers optimization methods. The sixth part looks at the application of reliability and optimization methods. Assessment of Power System Reliability has been written in straightforward language that continues into the mathematical representation of the methods. Power engineers and developers will appreciate the emphasis on practical usage, while researchers and advanced students will benefit from the simple examples that can facilitate their understanding of the theory behind power system reliability and that outline the procedure for application of the presented methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric power networks are complex systems because of their geographic spread and the consequent need for interconnections and integration of different components such as generators, transformers, lines, reactors, relays, and loads. Therefore, power utilities seek to ensure an acceptable degree of reliability in planning and operations, and accordingly, need information on component outages while satisfying the growing demand in order to ensure the availability of the system and prevent downtimes. Power systems of today are facing major challenges because of the rapid increase in penetration of energy resources (ERs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). This thesis focuses on the evaluation of composite system reliability using direct probabilistic analysis techniques. The research presents the mathematical foundations, evaluation procedures, and reliability and risk indices associated with composite power system reliability evaluation using the minimal cut set calculations. The concept of minimal cut sets is applied to evaluate two sets of reliability and risk indices, system indices and nodal indices. System indices are essential for system planners and operators to determine the likelihood of interruption of supply, while nodal indices provide useful information on significant load points. The performance of the system under outage condition of generators, transmission lines, or both, is examined by conducting an appropriate power flow study. An optimal power flow (OPF) model is solved to find the system and nodal minimal cut sets and the associated indices. The thesis presents a novel composite system reliability based planning for ERs with clustering techniques based approaches to determine the optimal location, size and year of installation of ERs in the system. The K-means clustering and Fuzzy C-means clustering techniques are applied to the set of reliability indices, Load Not Served per Interruption (LNSI), which are determined using nodal minimal cut sets. The nodal minimal cut sets are obtained using an OPF based approach. Once the optimal sizes and locations of ERs are obtained, the earliest year of their penetration into the system is determined using an adequacy check algorithm. The thesis further presents a novel method to detect the critical components of composite power systems under steady-state conditions and short-term operations in order to help planners make economic decisions on new investments in generation capacities and transmission lines upgrades, and also to help operators maintain the delivery of electricity during system failure and disturbance events. Each component is ranked based on minimal cut set outage probability and the consequent loss of load arising from the outages of components belonging to a minimal cut set. Finally, the thesis presents a novel framework to evaluate the impact of PEV charging loads on composite power system reliability. A Smart-OPF model combined with a minimum cut set approach is proposed to evaluate the system reliability indices. Demand response (DR) is included in the proposed procedure and its impact on system reliability indices is studied. The procedure to determine the critical components of the power system in the presence of PEV loads and DR is also proposed.
