Book excerpt: This report reviews potential health hazards from carbon/graphite and boron composite materials used in aircraft. Carbon and boron fibers are used as reinforcement in an epoxy matrix to form composite material aircraft parts. There is increasing concern over the potential health effects of these fibers released during sanding and grinding of composite parts in structural repair shops, and during clean up operations following aircraft accidents involving fire and/or breakage of composite parts. With the demise of the term 'CORKER, ' hazards from carbon composite materials were deemphasized. However, the CORKER annotation only addressed the electrical shorting hazards from airborne fibers following a fire and did not examine in detail potential health effects. Maintenance workers fear that carbon fibers are carcinogens. A review of the current literature on carbon fiber indicates it is relatively inert. Industrial hygiene evaluations should include sampling for total dust and comparing the levels to the ACGIH TLV for nuisance dust. Occupational health efforts should focus on problems with contact dermatitis from the resins systems and toxic effects of resin hardeners.

Book excerpt: Concerns about the potential health hazards of burning fiber-reinforced polymer composites in aircraft fires parallel the rising usage of these materials for commercial aircraft primary and secondary structures. An overview of the nature and the potential hazards associated with airborne carbon fibers released during flaming combustion of aircraft composites is presented. The current data derived from animal studies are insufficient to determine the acute toxicity of carbon fibers from burning composites. Further work is needed to examine the adverse health effects of volatile organic chemicals and to assess if any synergistic interactions exist with the fibers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Navy aircraft are involved in crash incidents, firefighters must be aware of hazards presented by airframe composite-material construction. Composite matrices may be combustible, contributing to the aircraft fuel load and burning hazard. Additionally, fibers released from burning composites may present a respiration hazard to firefighters. Current Navy and military doctrine recognize these hazards; cautionary guidance is provided for composite materials reinforced with carbon/graphite fibers and boron/tungsten fibers. The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), which provides technical guidance for aircraft fire safety, was concerned that hazards presented by new composite materials and greater quantities of composites may not be adequately addressed in current firefighting and guidance. The objective of this project was to perform a literature search to identify any existing "gaps in knowledge" concerning the role of composite materials in a fire mishap involving an aircraft having composite construction materials. With these "gaps" identified, future actions can be identified, prioritized, and performed.

Book excerpt: Industrial hygiene surveys were conducted to assess personnel exposures to carbon fibers and carbon/epoxy composite dust during carbon composite airframe sanding operations. The operation is currently performed every two to three weeks for eight hours at a time. The nature and frequency of operation performance is expected to change as more composite aircraft are put into service. The health implications of carbon composite particulate exposure are not well understood. Good industrial hygiene practices, however, suggest that exposure levels be kept to a minimum. Recommendations for reducing personnel exposure have been made. To characterize the composite debris, a particle size distribution and fiber dimension analyses were done. Additionally, several organizational standards relating to carbon composite particulates were evaluated. A recommendation for reducing the applicable Coast Guard standards has been made. Other potential hazards identified were exposure to solvents during lay-up procedures, and to primer dust during sanding work. Both require further evaluation to determine the extent of the exposure.

Book excerpt: Military use of advanced polymer matrix composites (PMC)â€"consisting of a resin matrix reinforced by high-performance carbon or organic fibersâ€"while extensive, accounts for less that 10 percent of the domestic market. Nevertheless, advanced composites are expected to play an even greater role in future military systems, and DOD will continue to require access to reliable sources of affordable, high-performance fibers including commercial materials and manufacturing processes. As a result of these forecasts, DOD requested the NRC to assess the challenges and opportunities associated with advanced PMCs with emphasis on high-performance fibers. This report provides an assessment of fiber technology and industries, a discussion of R&D opportunities for DOD, and recommendations about accelerating technology transition, reducing costs, and improving understanding of design methodology and promising technologies.
