The succeeding homotypic division of the dyad cell nucleus is not accompanied by cell wall for mation so each one of the dyad cells becomes 2-nucleate (fig. 4c, H). The apical dyad cell degenerates (fig. 4b, The basal one develops into an embryo sac (fig. 4d, E, I) during increasing cell growth and plasma vacuolization (fig. 4j, K). After new nuclear divisions there is a 4-nucleate embryo sac stage (fig. 4l). The material shows all the accounted stages very richly. However, there are no older embryo sac stages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compositae Newsletter, Vol. 40: 31 July 2003 Molecular studies of the owering plant family Compositae (asteraceae) conducted with jose panero, focusing on the Mutisieae and with sterling keeley and raymund chan focusing on the subfamily Cichorioideae have provided new insights into the evolution of the basal one third of the family. Based on comparative dna sequence data of chloroplast genes this study provides new insights into the radiation of the family. The results support the creation of new groups to maintain a classification that re ects evolutionary history. A paper (panero funk 2002) has been published proposing the following new names: subfamilies Corymbioideae, Gochnatioideae, Gymnarrhenoideae, Hecastocleoideae, and Pertyoideae. The totals now stand at 11 subfamilies and 35 tribes. Only one tribe, the Mutisieae, is non monophyletic having two branches. Most of the new groups are derived from taxa included in tribe Mutisieae, long suspected to be a paraphyletic group. Molecular studies that support these changes are discussed elsewhere (panero funk, ms) but a summary of their results is presented.
