Book Synopsis Components of manufacturing inventories by : Alan J. Auerbach

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a structural model of production and inventory accumulation based on the hypothesis of cost minimization. It differs from previous attempts in several respects. First, it integrates the analysis of input inventories with output inventories, treating the two stocks separately. Second, it distinguishes between temporary and permanent fluctuations in sales as they are anticipated by the industry. Third, it allows for a more general structure of adjustment costs, and in particular for a cost changing the production level rather than only for deviations of the production level from a fixed target. Empirically, there are three principal conclusions. This model performs much better than those with no cost of production adjustment allowed. Disaggregation of inventories provides significant insights into the dynamics of the adjustment process. However, the restrictions on our model implied by the continuous-time stochastic control theory that we utilize are rejected by the data. We believe that a more disaggregated specification or a more detailed econometric treatment of the discrete-time nature of the observations would avoid this difficulty

Book Synopsis Production Control by : J. W. M. Bertrand
Download or read book Production Control written by J. W. M. Bertrand and published by North-Holland. This book was released on 1990 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years the authors have been engaged in projects with many firms to analyse and redesign production and inventory control systems. The main purpose of this analysis and redesign was the reduction of inventory and costs, improvement of delivery performance, and simplification of the organization involved in production and inventory control. During these studies the authors became convinced that the knowledge available on the design of control systems places too much emphasis on techniques and methods, whereas the main concern should be to establish a proper control structure. This control structure should identify the main decision functions, their goals, their relationships, and the organizational position to which these decision functions should be assigned. For each decision function in the control structure, a global planning and decision procedure should be established. This book gives a comprehensive overview on the elements of a good production control structure. It examines approaches for possible structures, and how to select an adequate structure for a particular production situation. The book consists of two parts: The first part covers basic terms and ideas regarding the design of production and inventory control systems in general. The second part examines four case studies from essentially different production areas. The volume is intended for postgraduate students in such fields as production and inventory control, logistics, information systems and practitioners who are working in this field on a high organisation level.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Manufacturing Enterprises by : N. Viswanadham
Download or read book Analysis of Manufacturing Enterprises written by N. Viswanadham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Manufacturing Enterprises presents a unified and systematic treatment of manufacturing enterprises. These enterprises are networks of companies working in partnership. Such networks are a common occurrence in auto, grocery, apparel, computer and other industries; and competition is among enterprises rather than between individual companies. Thus, for these enterprises (global or local) to succeed, there is a need for systematically designing the enterprise-wide value delivery processes such as the order-to-delivery process, supply chain process, and new product development process. This calls for developing systematic analysis methodologies for evaluating the performance of value delivering processes. Analysis of Manufacturing Enterprises fills this vital need. The first part of the book focuses on foundations of manufacturing enterprises: the generic value delivery process, their performance measures and redesign to meet specifications on lead time and defect levels. The second part provides a clear and comprehensive discussion on new product development, order to delivery, and supply chain processes, which are core processes of a manufacturing enterprise. Analysis of Manufacturing Enterprises is an excellent resource for researchers and professionals in the field of manufacturing engineering.
