Book excerpt: Rolled, silver white hair created a halo about the woman's head. The lamplight cast oblique shadows on her delicate, high cheekbones. Above the cheekbones, her eyes were ice blue and steady, belying the eighty years of this statuesque woman. Her demeanor exhibited and commanded an aura of aristocracy. Kathleen's throat tightened and felt dry. She trembled slightly as she spoke. She was a reasonably intelligent, thirty-eight-year-old woman quite capable of comprehending all that had been depicted and yet, the shocking concept of the old woman's claim was loathsome and incredulous. Acceptance of such cruel allegations against her grandmother, whom she so admired, was totally denied. In this emotionally charged family saga, Kathleen is shocked to learn of her grandmother's wicked past from her Great Aunt Rose. As if the shocking revelations aren't hard enough for Kathleen to deal with, she is forced to make a decision that will determine the course of her future.

Fancy meeting you here, in the pages of a book about living unapologetically. I'm guessing you, like me, have spent far too much of your life saying "sorry" for things that don't warrant an apology. Things like existing, having opinions, or *gasp* taking up space in this vast, crazy world of ours. Let me tell you a secret: I never meant to write this book. In fact, I almost apologized to my publisher for pitching it. Ironic, isn't it? But here's the thing – that moment, that almost-apology, was the very reason I knew this book needed to exist. You see, I'm a reformed apologizer. A recovered sorry-aholic, if you will. I used to apologize for everything – for being too tall, for being too ambitious, for wanting more out of life than what was handed to me. I even apologized to a chair once when I bumped into it. (Yes, really. No, the chair didn't accept my apology. Rude.) But one day, something snapped. Maybe it was the time I apologized for getting promoted, or when I said sorry for winning an award. Whatever it was, I realized I was diminishing my own light, shrinking myself to make others comfortable. And so began my journey towards unapologetic living. It wasn't easy. There were stumbles, backslides, and moments where I found myself apologizing for not apologizing. But slowly, surely, I began to stand tall (all 5'11" of me), to speak my mind, and to live life on my own terms. This book is the culmination of that journey. It's part self-help guide, part personal narrative, and part kick in the pants for anyone who's ever felt they needed permission to be themselves. Fair warning: this isn't your typical self-help book. You won't find any promises of overnight transformation or secret formulas for success. What you will find is honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of tough love. Oh, and probably a few typos – because I refuse to apologize for being imperfectly human. In these pages, we'll explore why we apologize so damn much, how to stop, and what life looks like on the other side of "sorry". We'll laugh (mostly at my expense), we might cry (no judgment), and we'll definitely challenge some deeply ingrained beliefs about our place in the world. So, if you're ready to ditch the unnecessary apologies, to stand in your power, and to live life unapologetically, then buckle up, buttercup. It's going to be one hell of a ride. And remember: you have nothing to apologize for.

As a New Year begins in Bath, Ben Brace proposes to his long-term girlfriend, Caroline, the daughter of notorious crime baron Joe Irving, who is coming to the end of a prison sentence. The problem is that Ben’s father, George, is the Deputy Chief Constable. A more uncomfortable set of in-laws would be hard to imagine. But mothers and sons are a formidable force: a wedding in the Abbey and reception in the Roman Baths are arranged before the career-obsessed DCC can step in. Peter Diamond, Bath’s head of CID, is appalled to be put in charge of security on the day. Ordered to be discreet, he packs a gun and a guest list in his best suit and must somehow cope with potential killers, gang rivals, warring parents, bossy photographers and straying bridesmaids. The laid-back Joe Irving seems oblivious to the danger he is in from rival gang leaders, while Brace can’t wait for the day to end. Will the photo session be a literal shoot? Will Joe Irving’s speech as father of the bride be his last words? Can Diamond pull off a miracle, avert a tragedy and send the happy couple on their honeymoon?

This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first introduction to the French language was in the spring of 1962 when under the GI Educational Bill I enrolled, along with the other required courses, in French 101 at the College of Marin. Regretfully, employment pursuits required that I drop one course. To my lifelong regret I opted to cut French, since my eventual 40 year old professional career in International Advertising, Marketing, and Sales Promotion, as well as a 5 year tour as a Commercial Attaché with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Foreign Commercial Service, led me into numerous environments where being able to speak and comprehend French would have rendered my career even more successful. With a decision to join my eventual spouse’s business in Belgium during 1977, I inherited a Belgian family, most of which had a sound understanding of English and were more interested in improving on my language than on insisting that I improve on theirs! During the ensuing 35 years I was somewhat successful in this respect, but managed to make only marginal progress in my attempt to obtain fluency in the French language, despite a 3 year residency in Belgium and ultimate 8 retirement years in France. Still, during these periods I managed to observe segments of the French language that at least could be considered survival methods. For example, having enrolled in several French courses in both Belgium and France I noted that teachers tended to over-complicate French grammar; especially when tutoring ‘English’ students. Over the course of my 78 years I noted that the basics of all languages are rooted in knowing how to address the “Who, What, When, Where, and Why” of a language. After more than 10 years of procrastination I decided to make a small contribution to help rectify this educational oversight! The result is this guide; the contents of which, while not a substitute for learning to speak and write fluently in French, will at least offer one the ability to ‘communicate’ their desires, objectives, and needs when confronted by situations wherein only French is spoken and understood. I hope the user of this guide will find its contents as informative and useful as I did in preparing it. -Paul S. Lessig

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our culture is self-obsessed – in our schedules, relationships, and especially online. (Can you say selfie?) But in this near-narcissism, people are less content than in decades past. Why? Because we forgot the joy that comes from putting others first. Doing so requires us to live alert, listening for “heart drops,” hints from those in our lives who need a helping hand or a generous dose of encouragement. Living alert lifts our own spirits, showing us that blessing others blesses us even more. Listen, Love, Repeat offers biblical teaching and suggests doable actions that are simple, heart-tugging, sentimental, even sneaky and hilarious. This message: • Presents scriptural examples of those who lived alert, including Jesus, who noticed those who least expected to be seen. • Explains the role of good works for followers of Christ. They aren’t our ticket to heaven but they are our marching orders on earth. • Gives creative ideas for showing love to friends and family, and suggests practical ways to reach out to the lonely, the marginalized, the outcast, and the odd duck. Additionally, it helps you comfort the grieving, showing what you can do when you don’t know what to say. • Provides inspiration for blessing the “necessary people” in your life, those often-overlooked souls who help you get life done every day, and teaches you how to hug a porcupine by genuinely loving the hard-to-love. As we scatter love, we create a safe space where we can openly share the gospel. We get to see lives changed right before our eyes. Most importantly, Listen, Love, Repeat will enable you to live a life that is full of kind deeds, not to selfishly shout, “Hey! Look at me!” but to humbly implore, “Will you look at Him?”

Book excerpt: In this gripping book, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ron Suskind tells the complete story of the financial meltdown in the United States and an untested new president charged with commanding Washington, taming Wall Street, rescuing an economy on the verge of collapse and restoring the confidence of a shaken nation. Suskind moves from the frenzied trading floors of lower Manhattan to the power corridors inside the Beltway and introduces a larger-than-life cast of politicians and advisors, titans of high finance, reformers, lobbyists and others who faced a crisis that threatened not only a nation, but the entire world. Based on hundreds of hours of interviews and exhaustive research, filled with piercing insight and startling disclosures, Suskind’s eye-opening book goes beyond the headlines and previous accounts, bringing into focus the unprecedented struggle between Wall Street and Washington, between hope and fear, that continues to roil the country.
