In particular they are promising candidates for realisations of quantum bits and further applications in quantum information theory. The harmonically confined Hooke's atom model is experimentally verified. In order to study effects of an anharmonic confinement potential on spectral properties of planar two-electron quantum dots a sophisticated numerical approach is developed. Classical and quantum features of complexity and chaos are investigated. The concept of offset entanglement, the entanglement of harmonic models in the non-interacting limit, is introduced. It shows that only in the groundstate the electrons are not entangled in the fermionic sense. The applicability, validity, and origin of Hund's first rule in general quantum dot models is further addressed. In fact Hund's first rule is only applicable, and in this case also valid, for one pair of singlet and triplet states in Hooke's atom. For more realistic models of two-electron quantum dots an extension of Hund's first rule for unnatural parity states, the alternating rule, is found to be valid.

The properties of many-electron systems confined in a dot are also studied. This includes the separation of the center-of-mass mo tion for the parabolic confining potential (and hence the insensitivity of the transitions under far infrared radiation to the Coulomb interactions and the number of particles - the generalized Kohn theorem) and the effects due to Coulomb interactions (formation of the incompressible magic states at high magnetic fields and their relation to composite jermions), and finally the spin-orbit interactions. In addition, the excitonic properties of quantum dots are discussed, including the energy levels and the spectral function of a single exciton, the relaxation of confined carriers, the metastable states and their effect on the photoluminescence spectrum, the interaction of an exciton with carriers, and exciton condensation. The theoretical part of this work, which is based largely on original re sults obtained by the authors, has been supplemented with descriptions of various methods of creating quantum-dot structures.

Book excerpt: In the quest towards harnessing quantum systems to study quantum physical phenomena and eventually build a universal quantum computer, multiple promising platforms have emerged. Vast progress has been made on the circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) platform, where superconducting quantum bits (qubits) are already being used in networks of beyond 50. Another favored implementation is the spin of a single electron. While it is challenging to control due to its weak interactions with the environment, that property is a promising ingredient for long-lived and coherent qubits. Uniting these two platforms has the potential for a powerful symbiosis, combining the long-range networking via microwave photons with the coherence of a single electron spin.In this thesis, we build upon first demonstrations of coherent coupling between individual electron spins with microwave photons. In this coupling approach, the electron is trapped inside a double quantum dot (DQD) and subjected to a strong magnetic field gradient, which enables coupling of the spin to the electric field of a superconducting resonator. We extend this hybrid cQED architecture by a new coupling approach that allows for scalable access to charge-photon coupling while retaining its coupling strength. We then utilize this architecture to demonstrate resonant long-distance coupling between two spins and a cavity photon across a distance of over 4 mm. This first link between two separated spins improves the range of interaction between two spins by more than 4 orders of magnitude compared to usual exchange based approaches with 100 nm length scales.We scale the architecture from using DQDs to triple quantum dots (TQDs) and study the valley states in the array. Using the high-resolution readout of the coupled resonator, we extract the inter-valley coupling elements between neighboring quantum dots, studying the complex-valued nature of the valley states. This new insight into the state landscape of electrons in silicon quantum dots can help feed back into substrate fabrication efforts and shed light onto interdot dynamics that also occur in quantum dot arrays without a cavity sensor. Finally, we utilize a cavity-coupled TQD to perform high-fidelity spin readout via a flexible gate-sensing approach.

Book excerpt: The authors have performed a comprehensive set of experiments on the dynamics of electrons and holes in semiconductor quantum dots, and a complete picture of the dynamics as a function of carrier density and temperature has emerged. Specifically, they have used two- and three-pulse femtosecond differential transmission spectroscopy to study the dependence of quantum dot carrier dynamics on temperature. At low temperatures and densities, the rates for relaxation between the quantum dot confined states and for capture from the barrier region into the various dot levels could be directly determined. For electron-hole pairs generated directly in the quantum dot excited state, relaxation is dominated by electron-hole scattering, and occurs on a 5-ps time scale. Capture times from the barrier into the quantum dot are on the order of 2 ps (into the excited state) and 10 ps (into the ground state). The phonon bottleneck was clearly observed in low-density capture experiments, and the conditions for its observation (namely, the suppression of electron-hole scattering for non-geminately captured electrons) were determined. As temperature increases beyond about 100 K, the dynamics become dominated by the reemission of carriers from the lower dot levels due to the large density of states in the wetting layer and barrier region. Measurements of the gain dynamics show fast (130-fs) gain recovery due to intradot carrier-carrier scattering, and picosecond-scale capture. Direct measurement of the transparency density versus temperature shows the dramatic effect of carrier reemission for the quantum dots to thermally activated scattering. The carrier dynamics at elevated temperatures are thus strongly dominated by the high density of the high-energy continuum states relative to the dot-confined levels. Deleterious hot carrier effects can be suppressed in quantum dot lasers by resonant tunneling injection.
