Book excerpt: Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) is widely recognized as both the supreme exponent of the Spanish Golden Age and as one of the greatest artists of all time. During his lifetime, he was admired not only at the cosmopolitan court of King Philip IV in Madrid, but also by the imperial court in Vienna and the papal court in Rome. Rediscovered in the 19th century, his work became an essential stimulus to the development of modern painting. Fernando Checa's monograph recasts the traditional critical reception of Velazquez as a Realist master, exploring other avenues of interpretation by examining his relationship with Classicism and with the most progressive trends in painting in his day. At the heart of the book is the color catalogue, which includes Velazquez's entire oeuvre with numerous details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postwar migration of Puerto Rican men and women to Chicago brought thousands of their children into city schools. These children's classroom experience continued the colonial project begun in their homeland, where American ideologies had dominated Puerto Rican education since the island became a US territory. Mirelsie Velázquez tells how Chicago's Puerto Ricans pursued their educational needs in a society that constantly reminded them of their status as second-class citizens. Communities organized a media culture that addressed their concerns while creating and affirming Puerto Rican identities. Education also offered women the only venue to exercise power, and they parlayed their positions to take lead roles in activist and political circles. In time, a politicized Puerto Rican community gave voice to a previously silenced group--and highlighted that colonialism does not end when immigrants live among their colonizers. A perceptive look at big-city community building, Puerto Rican Chicago reveals the links between justice in education and a people's claim to space in their new home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of 32 articles about Velázquez which appeared in scholarly journals, exhibition catalogues and newspapers and magazines between 1964 and 2006. Several are published in English for the first time. The text is the record of a lifelong engagement with the life and works of this enigmatic artist and evaluates many of the numerous attempts to solve the mysteries presented by the Spaniard’s paintings. These questions are considered in the final essay, Velázquez, today and tomorrow’, which is published here for the first time. Two themes unite the essays. Velázquez was the court painter to Philip IV, and the changing relationship between painter and patron provides the framework for interpreting the artist’s career. The centerpiece of this relationship is Velázquez’s Las Meninas, which is the subject of two long articles, the now-classic On the Meaning of Las Meninas’ (1978) and Las Meninas as a masterpiece’ (1999). The second theme is the problem of attributions and the related question of Velázquez’s innovative technique. Velázquez was not a prolific painter. As the supply of securely-attributed works is now mostly in museums, and as the price of great pictures continues to reach new heights, questions of authenticity become increasingly contentious. In this book, Brown considers the problem in its widest dimensions and participates in the debate about individual attributions.Jonathan Brown is regarded as a leading specialist on Spanish painting of the Golden Age and on the Spanish master Diego Velázquez. Among his many books are Velázquez, Painter and Courtier (1986) and Velázquez. The Technique of Genius (1998), with Carmen Garrido. His studies of art at the European courts include A Palace for a King. The Buen Retiro and the Court of Philip IV, with John H. Elliott (rev. ed. 2003). Brown is Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Fine Arts, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

Book excerpt: Here approximately two hundred works by French and Spanish artists chart the development of this cultural influence and map a fascinating shift in the paradigm of painting, from Idealism to Realism, from Italy to Spain, from Renaissance to Baroque. Above all, these images demonstrate how direct contact with Spanish painting fired the imagination of nineteenth-century French artists and brought about the triumph of Realism in the 1860s, and with it a foundation for modern art."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The startling conclusion of The Late Paintings of Vel?uez is that Diego Vel?uez painted two of his most famous works, The Spinners and Las Meninas, as theoretically informed manifestos of painterly brushwork. As a pair, Giles Knox argues, the two paintings form a learned retort to the prevailing critical disdain for the painterly. Knox presents a Vel?uez who was much more aware of the art theory of his era than previously acknowledged, leading him to reinterpret Las Meninas and The Spinners as representing together a polemically charged celebration of the "handedness" of painting. Knox removes Vel?uez from his Iberian isolation and seeks to recover his highly self-conscious attempt to carve out a place for himself within the history of European painting as a whole. The Late Paintings of Vel?uez presents an artist who, like Annibale Carracci, Poussin, Rembrandt, and Vermeer was not only aware of contemporary theoretical writings on art, but also able to translate that knowledge and understanding into a distinctive and personal theory of painting. In Las Meninas and The Spinners, Vel?uez propounded this theory with paint, not words. Knox's rethinking of the dynamic relationship between text and image presents a case, not of writing influencing painting, or vice versa, but of the two realms being inextricably bound together. Painterly brushwork presented a challenge to writers on art not just because it was connected too intimately with the base actions of the hand; it was also devilishly hard to describe. By reading Vel?uez's painterly performance as text, Knox deciphers how Vel?uez was able to craft theoretical arguments more compelling and more vivid than any written counterparts.

CHAPTER XI Scarcity of drawings by Velazquez--Collections where they are to be found-- Only two engravings by Velazquez are known, one an etching and the other engraved by the 'burin'--The character of Velazquez, inferred from official, in the absence of more intimate documents--His relations with his fellow artists-- Memorandum of the pictures taken to the Monastery of the Escurial by Diego Velazquez--History of this memorandum; different opinions upon it; it must be considered apocryphal--Velazquez's journey to the Pyrenees on the occasion of the marriage of the Infanta Maria Teresa de Austria with Louis xiv.--His return to Madrid--Illness of Velazquez--His death on August 6th, ]66'0, at the age of sixty-one--Death of his wife Juana Pacheco--The sequestration of the possessions of Velazquez and their complete restoration six years afterwards--The best known pupils of Velazquez; his influence on his contemporaries. EVERY biographer of Velazquez, even at the present day, meets with two inexplicable gaps which are obstacles to the complete knowledge of the man and the artist; the first is the almost entire disappearance of his correspondence, as mentioned in Chapter vi.; and the second the surprising rarity of drawings and sketches by his hand. How is this to be explained? Can Velazquez have executed his pictures without the help of preliminary studies, or even a sketch of the composition? I am inclined to believe it, for even whilst admitting the carelessness of the majority of those who possessed his drawings, it is hardly probable that almost all could have gone astray. In Spain it is only possible to regard as authentic the two somewhat unimportant sketches at Madrid, one in the National Library,1 and the other and better one in the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating journey through a single painting’s history, meanings and associations by “one of the great non-fiction writers of this and the last century” (Simon Schama, Financial Times). Acclaimed travel author and art historian Michael Jacobs was haunted by Velázquez’s enigmatic masterpiece Las Meninas from first encountering it in the Prado as a teenager. In Everything is Happening Jacobs searches for the ultimate significance of the painting by following the many associations suggested by each of its characters, as well as his own relationship to the work. From Jacobs’ first trip to Spain to the politics of Golden Age Madrid, to his meeting with the man who saved Las Meninas during the Spanish Civil war, to his experiences in the sunless world of the art history academy, Jacobs delivers a brilliantly discursive meditation on art and life that dissolves the barriers between the past and the present, the real and the illusory. Cut short by Jacobs’ death in 2014, and completed with an introduction and coda by his friend and fellow art lover, the journalist Ed Vulliamy, this visionary and often very funny book is a passionate, personal manifesto for the liberation of how we look at painting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the creation of canine breeds in early modern Europe, especially Spain, illustrates the different constructs against which notions of human identity were forged. This book is the first comprehensive history of early modern Spanish dogs and it evaluates how two of Spain’s most celebrated and canonical cultural figures of this period, the artist Diego Velázquez and the author Miguel de Cervantes, radically question humankind’s sixteenth-century anthropocentric self-fashioning. In general, this study illuminates how Animal Studies can offer new perspectives to understanding Hispanism, giving readers a fresh approach to the historical, literary and artistic complexity of early modern Spain.
