Managing goats successfully requires an understanding of how nature designed them to thrive, including nutritional and psychological needs, as well as how to identify a problem and intercede before it’s too late. For more than a decade, Gianaclis Caldwell and her family have operated Pholia Farm Creamery, an off-grid, raw milk goat cheese dairy. In Holistic Goat Care, Caldwell offers readers a comprehensive guide to maintaining a healthy herd of goats, whether they are dairy goats, meat goats, fiber goats, or pet goats. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pygmy goats are a domestic variety of goat that are said to have originated in the Cameroon region of West African. They belong to the class Mammalia. It is possible to find forms very similar to these all over northern and southwestern Africa. The scientific name for these animals is Capra aegagrus hircus, which derives from the Latin terms for she-goat (capra) and he-goat (hircus) (hircus). Pygmy goats, who are known for their small size and outgoing personality, are now commonly maintained as pets in many different locations. Pygmy goats are also referred to as dwarf goats due to the fact that they only reach a maximum height of 20 inches during their lifetime. The ladies can weigh anywhere from 35 to 50 pounds, while the males can weigh anything from 40 to 60 pounds. They come in a wide variety of hues, including white/caramel, dark red, silver/black with frosted spots, solid black, and brown. The choice of colors is rather extensive. Characteristics of the breed that are viewed favorably include the absence of beards in females and the presence of a broad, long mane that spans the shoulders in males. Although they are primarily used for meat, these goats do have the ability to produce a very tiny amount of milk. They have pupils that are rectangular in shape and a stomach that is divided into four chambers. Their hooves have two toes each. They are nimble climbers thanks to their hooves, which have two toes each, and their pupils, which are rectangular, allow them to view 280 degrees in all directions surrounding their body. Because of this, they are able to search the surroundings for potential dangers. In addition to this, goats have a four-chambered stomach that is populated by bacteria that are responsible for breaking down the cellulose found in the vegetation that goats consume. Their first stomach has an incredible capacity of 10 quarts, which enables them to consume massive quantities of food in a short period of time.
