Book excerpt: NEON THE UNKNOWN - After nearly dying of thirst and desert heat, a strange glowing pool gives Tom Corbet amazing "neonic" powers: the ability to fly, to discharge energy, to glow and to fight with super-human strength. As NEON THE UNKNOWN he fights against Nazis and other evil-doers of the world. One of the most colorful characters of the Golden Age, NEON THE UNKNOWN appeared in the first 17 issues of Hit Comics (1940-1941) - and only Gwandanaland Comics brings you his complete adventures! SPIDER WIDOW - She weaves a web of justice to trap the insects of corruption! "Miss Diane Grayton, beautiful, wealthy and athletic, combats the forces of crime, enemy of the underworld, as the dangerous but lovely SPIDER WIDOW!!" She is beautiful, but dons the disguise of ugliness to ensnare evildoers. These are her complete stories, including her classic team-up with Phantom lady and The Raven! MOUTHPIECE - "A newly elected district attorney, young Bill Perkins, draws the ridicule of older officials because of his alert action methods. When our after first-hand evidence, Bill wears a mask and to the evasive figures beyond the law he brings terror and grim respect - to them he is THE MOUTHPIECE!" No one suspects his secret identity, which allows him to work the law from inside and outside - and for 13 exciting issues of Police Comics (1941-1942), THE MOUTHPIECE did just that! 711 - His real name is Dan Dyce, but no one knows or cares, because behind the prison walls he is merely Lifer #711. But cement walls and steel bars cannot hold this innocent man! When trouble demands, Dyce stealthily breaks from prison and becomes 711, scourge of evil and enemy of gangland's worst. #711 appeared in the first 15 issues of Police Comics (1941-1943); Gwandanaland Comics brings you his complete series, from beginning to end! WILDFIRE - "When she was an orphan, Carol Martin, adopted daughter of a wealthy family, received a gift of power over all flames from the Fire God! Now Carol, as the famous WILDFIRE flaming crusader against crime!" WILDFIRE, PRINCESS OF FLAME had a short run - Smash Comics #25-37 - but in that time cemented herself as a fan favorite for new generations. This is her complete series! Rip Graves (an ominous name if there ever was one) discovers that he is thought dead in battle at Flanders in World War One, and honored as an Unknown Soldier at Arlington. When World War Two breaks out Graves becomes Ghost of Flanders, fighting for his country using his crypt as his base. One of the great patriotic heroes of the Golden Age, GHOST OF FLANDERS appeared in Hit Comics for a short-but-exciting eight issues - and Gwandanaland Comics is the only place to find them altogether! But what about the many less well-known heroes who lined up to fight crooks, super villains or Hitler--like the Shield, the Black Terror, Crimebuster, Cat-Man, Dynamic Man, the Blue Beetle, the Black Cat and even Frankenstein? These and other four-color fighters crowded the newsstands from the late 1930s through the early 1950s. Most have since been overlooked, and not necessarily because they were victims of poor publication. This book gives the other superheroes of the Golden Age of comics their due.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phantom Lady is a fictional superheroine, one of the first female superhero characters to debut in the 1940s Golden Age of Comic Books. Originally published by Quality Comics, the character was subsequently published by a series of now-defunct comic book companies, and a new version of the character currently appears in books published by DC Comics. As published by Fox Feature Syndicate in the late 1940s, the busty and scantily-clad Phantom Lady is a notable and controversial example of "good girl art," a style of comic art depicting voluptuous female characters in provocative situations and pin-up poses that contributed to widespread criticism of the medium's effect on children. Phantom Lady was created by the Eisner & Iger studio, one of the first to produce comics on demand for publishers. The character's early adventures were drawn by Arthur Peddy. The character was ranked 49th in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list. Phantom Lady first appeared in Quality's Police Comics #1 (Aug, 1941), an anthology title the first issue of which also included the debut of characters such as Plastic Man and the Human Bomb. That issue established her alter ego as Sandra Knight, the beautiful Washington, D.C. debutante daughter of U.S. Senator Henry Knight. The issue established that it was not her first appearance as the Phantom Lady, but it did not go into her origin. Stories published decades later by DC Comics would give her a proper origin, which was altered several times to give Sandra a more active role. Her skimpy costume was eventually explained as a deliberate tactic to distract her usually male foes. Sandra Knight assumed the identity of Phantom Lady in a costume consisting of a green cape and the equivalent of a one-piece yellow swimsuit. She used a "black light projector," a device which allowed her to blind her enemies and make herself invisible. She drove a car whose headlights also projected black light when necessary. She was sometimes assisted by her fiance, Donald Borden, an agent of the U.S. State Department. Phantom Lady ran as one of the features in Police Comics through #23. Arthur Peddy continued as the artist through #13, with Joe Kubert drawing her feature in Police Comics #14-16; Frank Borth on #17-21; Arthur Peddy returned for #22,; and Rudy Palais on #23. Phantom Lady also appeared in Feature Comics #69-71 as part of a crossover with Spider Widow and the Raven

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phantom Lady featured the character of Sandra Knight, aka, the Phantom Lady, a character formerly published by Quality Comics. This series continus the numbering sequence from Wotalife Comics and continues as My Love Secret following issue #23. Phantom Lady appeared in Police Comics #1 to 23, and Feature Comics #69-71, where she teamed up with Spider-Widow. Phantom Lady's more modest (!) Quality Comics lookPhantom Lady then jumped ship from Quality, when the (now simply) Iger Studio recostumed her for use by Fox Features Syndicate, who gave the character her own title, Phantom Lady, which lasted from #1 (August, 1947) to #26 (April 1949). She also guested in All-Top Comics #8 to #15. Shortly afterwards, Fox went bust. Star Comics bought the rights to the Fox characters, and had Phantom lady turn up in a couple of their comics, then Farrell Publications got hold of her, and produced four issues of their own Phantom Lady series (unlike many of the characters they revived from other companies, they kept both costume and true identity unchanged). Eventually Charlton bought up most of the Fox characters, presumably including Phantom Lady. This Volume covers Phantom Lady adventures from 1947 - 1949 Approx 365 pages

Weighing in at over a thousand pages, containing over forty-seven stories and two novels, this book is big baby, bigger and more powerful than a freight train—a bullet couldn’t pass through it. Here are the best stories and every major writer who ever appeared in celebrated Pulps like Black Mask, Dime Detective, Detective Fiction Weekly, and more. These are the classic tales that created the genre and gave birth to hard-hitting detectives who smoke criminals like packs of cigarettes; sultry dames whose looks are as lethal as a dagger to the chest; and gin-soaked hideouts where conversations are just preludes to murder. This is crime fiction at its gritty best. Including: • Three stories by Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich, Erle Stanley Gardner, and Dashiell Hammett. • Complete novels from Carroll John Daly, the man who invented the hard-boiled detective, and Fredrick Nebel, one of the masters of the form. • A never before published Dashiell Hammett story. • Every other major pulp writer of the time, including Paul Cain, Steve Fisher, James M. Cain, Horace McCoy, and many many more of whom you’ve probably never heard. • Three deadly sections–The Crimefighters, The Villains, and Dames–with three unstoppable introductions by Harlan Coben, Harlan Ellison, and Laura Lippman Featuring: • Plenty of reasons for murder, all of them good. • A kid so smart–he’ll die of it. • A soft-hearted loan shark’s legman learning–the hard way–never to buy a strange blonde a hamburger. • The uncanny “Moon Man” and his mad-money victims.

Book excerpt: Collected from Magazine Enterprises' comic books of the late-1940s, the complete adventures of Starr Flagg, the Undercover Girl, present a microcosm of post-war American popular culture and paranoia from the unique perspective of a female protagonist. In the comics of the atomic age espionage was an almost entirely male occupation but chain-smoking Starr traded punches and gun shots with a bevy of antagonists, both male and female. The stories were all most likely written by Gardner Fox and were definitely illustrated by Ogden Whitney. Bob Powell provided the three covers for the three reprint issues of Undercover Girl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing especially on American comic books and graphic novels from the 1930s to the present, this massive four-volume work provides a colorful yet authoritative source on the entire history of the comics medium. Comics and graphic novels have recently become big business, serving as the inspiration for blockbuster Hollywood movies such as the Iron Man series of films and the hit television drama The Walking Dead. But comics have been popular throughout the 20th century despite the significant effects of the restrictions of the Comics Code in place from the 1950s through 1970s, which prohibited the depiction of zombies and use of the word "horror," among many other rules. Comics through Time: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas provides students and general readers a one-stop resource for researching topics, genres, works, and artists of comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels. The comprehensive and broad coverage of this set is organized chronologically by volume. Volume 1 covers 1960 and earlier; Volume 2 covers 1960–1980; Volume 3 covers 1980–1995; and Volume 4 covers 1995 to the present. The chronological divisions give readers a sense of the evolution of comics within the larger contexts of American culture and history. The alphabetically arranged entries in each volume address topics such as comics publishing, characters, imprints, genres, themes, titles, artists, writers, and more. While special attention is paid to American comics, the entries also include coverage of British, Japanese, and European comics that have influenced illustrated storytelling of the United States or are of special interest to American readers.

Entertainment took the form of literature, music, and theatre. During this golden age of Broadway, actors and actresses became legends and starred in now classic plays. Laurence Olivier, Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontaine were names to remember, etching plays into memory as they brought the words of Tennessee Williams or Eugene O'Neill to life. Joseph Cotton romanced Katherine Hepburn in Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story while Laurette Taylor became The Glass Menagerie's Amanda Wingfield. Frederic March, Florence Eldridge, Jason Robards Jr. and Bradford Dillman showed us life among the ruins in Long Day's Journey Into Night. In All That Glittered, Ethan Mordden, long one of Broadway's best chroniclers, recreates the fascinating lost world of its golden age.
