Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Whichever way it is turned, the magnetic needle swings slowly around, and finally settles to rest with one end pointing nearly north and the other end nearly south. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Notions of Geography Any text on geography would be unintelligible without il lustrations, and the illustration peculiar to geography is the map. This little book lays the foundation for the study of the map by the lessons on direction and on the elevations and depressions of the earth's surface. The forces of nature, and the various phenomena connected with the sun, moon, and stars, are all closely related to geography, and cannot be overlooked in any presentation of that subject, however simple. The lessons on the materials which supply our food, clothing, and shelter are an introduction to that larger study of geography which reveals how nature and the forces of nature have been made to render service to man. Suppose again you had been the commanding officer at some great battle, and wished to explain the movements of the troops to a friend, to shew how this farmhouse was taken, that clump of trees occupied, and that road defended, in short how the battle went from beginning to end; what would you do? You would draw it all out small on a piece of paper, in the same proportions, and with the places and things in their positions with regard to each other, just as it would look if you were hanging over it in a balloon in other words, you would make a map of it, and then you could easily shew your friend where the regiments stood, and how the batteries were placed, and in short could go through all the successive operations of the day, and make them plain to him, plainer than they were in the battle itself, where only one part could be seen at a time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
