Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preeminent writer of Taiwanese nativist fiction and the leading translator of Chinese literature come these poignant accounts of everyday life in rural and small-town Taiwan. Huang is frequently cited as one of the most original and gifted storytellers in the Chinese language, and these selections reveal his genius. In "The Two Sign Painters," TV reporters ambush two young workers from the country taking a break atop a twenty-four-story building. "His Son's Big Doll" introduces the tortured soul inside a walking advertisement, and in "Xiaoqi's Cap" a dissatisfied pressure-cooker salesman is fascinated by a young schoolgirl. Huang's characters -- generally the uneducated and disadvantaged who must cope with assaults on their traditionalism, hostility from their urban brethren and, of course, the debilitating effects of poverty -- come to life in all their human uniqueness, free from idealization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Capitalizing on the talents of a multigenerational work force is the key to future business success. Sherri Elliott recognizes that and gives sound advice.” —Leslie Elliott, president, Toni & Guy, USA For the first time in history, the American workforce is comprised of four distinct generations—Traditionalists, Boomers, Xers, and Millennials. Additionally, today’s workforce brings with it a new set of challenges and opportunities: the looming labor shortage, sagging productivity, knowledge transfer, the language barrier, and stereotypes. Ties to Tattoos offers innovative ways to recruit, reward, manage, motivate, train, and retain, all within a generationally diverse workplace. Understanding generational issues is one of the best new tools for resolving conflicts and boosting productivity. Ties to Tattoos provides keys for understanding these issues and strategies to leverage multigenerational differences in ways that make companies stronger. The creative people strategies described throughout the book set the bar for companies in the coming decade with the sustainable competitive advantage engaged and committed employees. “Ties to Tattoos provides thought-provoking realities you need to consider. It affords actionable ideas on how to gain better understanding of what drives today’s workforce to deliver exceptional results.” —George Killebrew, Senior Vice-President of Corporate Sponsorships, Dallas Mavericks “Provides very helpful insights into the nature and reasons for these generational differences and offers strategies for leveraging them to an organization’s advantage. While the commonalities between generations may be much greater than the differences, knowing how to recognize and manage the differences can make the leadership challenge less daunting.” —Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, past president, Society for Human Resource Management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Lazonick explores how technological change has interacted with the organization of work, with major consequences for national competitiveness and industrial leadership. Looking at Britain, the United States, and Japan from the nineteenth century to the present, he explains changes in their status as industrial superpowers. Lazonick stresses the importance for industrial leadership of cooperative relations between employers and shop-floor workers. Such relations permit employers to use new technologies to their maximum potential, which in turn transforms the high fixed costs inherent in these technologies into low unit costs and large market shares. Cooperative relations can also lead employers to invest in the skills of workers themselves--skills that enable shop-floor workers to influence quality as well as quantity of production. To build cooperative shop-floor relations, successful employers have been willing to pay workers higher wages than they could have secured elsewhere in the economy. They have also been willing to offer workers long-term employment security. These policies, Lazonick argues, have not come at the expense of profits but rather have been a precondition for making profits. Focusing particularly on the role of labor-management relations in fostering "flexible mass production" in Japan since the 1950s, Lazonick criticizes those economists and politicians who, in the face of the Japanese challenge, would rely on free markets alone to restore the international competitiveness of industry in Britain and the United States.

Book excerpt: Japanese semiconductor firms are well known for obtaining dynamics in a short period of time and achieving even global leadership. A significant portion of their success are attributable to cooperative interfirm relations and the development of intermediate organizational structure based on long-term relationship between firms. The purpose of this book is to explain how interfirm relations contributed to their dynamics during the golden age of the semiconductor industry. Meanwhile this book clarifies the real source of dynamics in interfirm relations and how the firms have interacted. The author concludes that the competitive-cum-cooperative (CCC) interfirm interaction are observed. Quantitative and qualitative findings show that firms enjoy not only flexible cooperation based synergy effects, but also dynamics market-like effects by creating competition among partners through CCC interaction.

Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. There has been increasing interest and debate in recent years on the instituted nature of economic processes in general and the related ideas of the market, in particular the competitive process. This debate lies at the interface between two largely independent disciplines, economics and sociology, and reflects an attempt to bring the two fields of discourse more closely together. This book explores this interface in a number of ways, looking at the competitive process and market relations from a number of different perspectives. It includes a wide range of contributors, most of whom are leading writers and thinkers in the field. The book considers the social role of economic institutions in society and examines the various meanings embedded in the word 'markets', as well as developing arguments on the nature of competition as an instituted economic process, rather than as competition being something that disturbs norms or institutions. It goes on to consider the deeper and more involved connection between markets and cognition, explaining how institutions can ease cognitive difficulties, and the effect of culture on markets and competition is also fully studied. This book will be of vital use to students and academics working in the fields of economics, sociology and business studies. It sketches the agenda for future research about markets and the competitive process.
