Book excerpt: The field of Strategic Management has explored a range of new questions regarding technical change, firm capabilities, and executive decision-making, producing insights into the development of firms and unfolding of competition over time. These insights point to the importance of industry context and technical change, but little research deals systematically with the interaction between such contingencies and strategic choice. This volume explores the relationship between business strategy and the industry lifecycle competitive interaction. The contributors to this volume ask, "What kinds of firm capabilities are required to compete effectively in the various stages of the industry lifecycle?". Rather than focusing on generalized principles of interaction, they ask, "How do firms build these capabilities, and where to they come from?". Their answers expand our understanding of the relationships between industry evolution, technical change, and business strategy, as well as industry life cycle itself.

Book excerpt: Examine the global pharmaceutical industry and the effect of national, regulatory, economic, and market environments on the competitiveness of the industry! This unique book is the only empirical study that examines the effects of the national environment on the competitiveness of a country's pharmaceutical industry. This informative book explores such topics as the types of comparative advantages that firms use for developing competitive advantages and what strategic choices firms should make when collaborating with international firms. Public policy implications with respect to the economic environment are also discussed to give you a complete look at the international pharmaceutical industry. Global Competitiveness in the Pharmaceutical Industry recognizes pharmaceutical industries as being of great social and public importance to all countries, since so many life saving drugs have emerged from pharmaceutical laboratories over the past four decades. By helping to combat many fatal diseases and eradicate others, drug producers have helped to positively alter mortality patterns in many parts of the world, thus making companies compete to provide many important medicines. The unique research presented in this book examines the determinants of global competitive advantage in the pharmaceutical industry by answering such questions as: Which factors stimulate or inhibit a nation's pharmaceutical industry to be globally innovative? Which factors stimulate or inhibit diffusion of pharmaceutical innovations (NECs) into its markets? Are there differences between industrialized and developing countries with respect to factors that affect innovation and global competitiveness in the pharmaceutical industry? Global Competitiveness in the Pharmaceutical Industry makes several theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions which lead to results and generate important managerial and public policy implications. You will find a comprehensive overview of the nature of global competition in the pharmaceutical industry and its evolution in the post World War II period. Global Competitiveness in the Pharmaceutical Industry provides you with an in-depth understanding of the dynamics and importance of the global pharmaceutical market.

This book was released on 2011-11-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the pioneering work of Joseph Schumpeter (1942), it has been assumed that innovations typically play a key role in firms’ competitiveness. This assumption has been applied to firms in both developed and developing countries. However, the innovative capacities and business environments of firms in developing countries are fundamentally different from those in developed countries. It stands to reason that innovation and competitiveness models based on developed countries may not apply to developing countries. In this volume, Vivienne Wang and Elias G. Carayannis apply both theoretical approaches and empirical analysis to explore the dynamics of innovation in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on R&D in manufacturing firms. In so doing, they present an alternative to Michael Porter’s Competitive Advantage Model—a Competitive Position Model that focuses on incremental and adaptive innovations that are more appropriate than radical innovations for developing countries. Their research addresses such questions as: Do innovations advance the competitive positions of manufacturing firms in developing countries? Does the pace of innovation matter, in particular, in socio-economic and socio-political contexts? To what degree can national innovation systems and policies influence development? To what extent do a firm’s innovation commitments correlate with the protection of intellectual property rights? What roles do foreign direct investment and relationships with clusters and networks play? The resulting analysis not only challenges traditional theoretical approaches to innovation, but provides suggestions for improving business practice and policymaking.

Book excerpt: From a managerial perspective, the biopharmaceutical industry represents a competitive, fast-changing, intellectually-powered, innovation-driven sector. Many management scholars have studied this discontinuous era to make sense of strategic behavior and the cognition of firms and top managers. A past look at the biopharmaceutical industry provides answers to questions that most managers have. For example, what options do you have and what actions do you take when new firms enter your industry? In the 1970s, new biotechnology firms, funded by venture capitalists, appeared in the pharmaceutical industry with new knowledge. Successful pharmaceutical firms decided to collaborate with the new entrants and forge relationships to develop and create new, biotechnology engineered drugs. Thus, the addition of new biotechnology firms ushered in a new business model based on strategic alliances. Strategic alliances have now become an industrial norm called open innovation. The author looks at the historical path of the biopharmaceutical industry, particularly in the United States. While the pharmaceutical industry’s main contributions to society are substantial, there are pressing challenges the industry must face, such as an increase in infectious disease outbreaks or the global aging population, which require new types of care, additionally, mental health care and prescription painkiller addiction are persistent issues with economic repercussions to both federal and local governments. This book presents a holistic view of the biopharmaceutical industry, putting it in a historical context. It will best serve those who are eager to learn about this dynamic, fast-evolving industry and who would like to tackle current biopharmaceutical industry issues in the United States and be prepared for future industry challenges.

It is a national network of affiliated manufacturing extension centers and field offices located throughout all fifty states and Puerto Rico. Funding for MEP Centers comes from a combination of federal, state, local and private resources. Centers work directly with manufacturing firms in their state or sub-state region. MEP Centers provide expertise, services and assistance directed toward improving growth, supply chain positioning, leveraging emerging technologies, improving manufacturing processes, work force training, and the application and implementation of information in client companies through direct assistance provided by Center staff and from partner organizations and third party consultants. 21st Century Manufacturing seeks to generate a better understanding of the operation, achievements, and challenges of the MEP program in its mission to support, strengthen, and grow U.S. manufacturing. This report identifies and reviews similar national programs from abroad in order to draw on foreign practices, funding levels, and accomplishments as a point of reference and discusses current needs and initiatives in light of the global focus on advanced manufacturing,

Book excerpt: Twenty-one authors from a variety of backgrounds analyse the global competitiveness of the Asian firm in different parts of the world and at different phases of their internationalisation process. They find that the Asian firms' emphasis on 'soft' skills such as networking, organisational learning and sharing stands in sharp contrast to the economic rationality of Western firms, which stress individual performance measurement, clearly defined responsibilities and accountability. Asian firms face serious problems in adjusting their systems to the Western environment without losing their competitiveness.
