Book excerpt: The Plasma Proteins: Structure, Function, and Genetic Control, Second Edition, Volume III is an eight-chapter treatise that describes the plasma proteins in a systematic integrated manner. This book presents first the perspectives and global outlook at plasma proteins, followed by a series of chapters on the well-characterized major proteins, with particular emphasis on immunoglobulins. Other chapters are devoted to the integrated systems of plasma proteins, especially their structure, function, and genetic control. A chapter describes the plasma protein fractionation. The remaining chapters introduce the clinical relevance of the plasma proteins. This book will be of great value to biologists, geneticists, clinicians, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protides of the Biological Fluids contains the proceedings of the 23rd Colloquium on "Protides of the Biological Fluids" held in Brugge, Belgium in 1975. The discussions were organized around three themes: proteinase inhibitors, clinical evaluation of plasma protein patterns, and affinity chromatography. Comprised of 117 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of carcinofetal proteins, followed by an analysis of proteinase inhibition. The reader is then introduced to the mechanism and structure of human alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor; some properties of a complex between ?2-macroglobulin and brinase; and the interaction of proteinase inhibitors with blastocyst proteinases involved in implantation. Subsequent chapters deal with the thermodynamics and kinetics of the interaction of trypsin with trypsin inhibitors; purification and characterization of acid-stable proteinase inhibitors from human seminal plasma; and the possible role of protease inhibitors in cartilage metabolism. The book also explores the structure and function of animal proteinase inhibitors as well as techniques and methods used in clinical evaluation of plasma protein patterns. This monograph will be of interest to biologists and research workers in biology.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Nuclear Medicine, founded in 1961, celebrates with this Festschrift, its Golden Jubilee. It has been a remarkable 50 years of progress of the radionuclide tracer methodology. From initial, physiology based experimentation, a full independent medical discipline evolved, and with it, a comprehensive clinical service. Diagnosis and Treatment with radiotracers have established the basis for Nuclear Medicine. Technological advances have permeated the field like none other, its multidisciplinary character and its translational research are embedded in the history of the Institute and its success. Recent and latest advances in the field promise a future as bright as has been witnessed and documented in the last 50 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Hormone Radioimmunoassay, Second Edition is a compilation of radioimmunoassay techniques for the quantification of hormones. Various kinds of hormones are considered, namely: intracellular messengers; hypothalamic and pineal hormones; pituitary hormones; thyroid and parathyroid hormones; renal hormones; hormones of the gastrointestinal tract; pancreatic hormones; steroid hormones; uterine and placental hormones; vasoactive peptide hormones; and growth factors. The corresponding method of radioimmunoassay for each hormone is described. This book is comprised of 49 chapters and begins with a discussion on the radioimmunoassay of cyclic adenosine-3',5-monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine-3,5'-monophosphate (cGMP), together with problems related to measuring both compounds. The reader is then introduced to prostaglandins and prostaglandin metabolites, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Pituitaty gonadotropins, prolactin, and thyrotropin are also discussed. The remaining chapters deal with hormones of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreatic hormones, steroid hormones, and growth factors. This monograph is intended for both clinicians and investigators interested in methods of hormone radioimmunoassay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to measure accurately the hormones regulating calcium homeosta sis is the fundamental first step toward understanding the roles these hormones play in health and disease. Techniques for such measurements have only been available for the past 10 years or so and remain in a state of rapid development. Sensitive parathyroid hormone (PTH) radioimmunoassays appeared in the early 1970s, and with them came a whole new appreciation for the prevalence and implications of hyperparathyroidism, primary or secondary, in the popu lation. The calcitonin (CT) radioimmunoassay came later and achieved rapid success in the. diagnosis of a previously poorly understood cancer, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, frequently associated with the familial multiple endo crine neoplasia type 2 syndromes (a and b). As the sensitivity of the calcitonin radioimmunoassay has improved, our understanding of the role of calcitonin in normal physiological processes has increased. The knowledge that vitamin D must be metabolized to produce its biologic effects is only 15 years old. This has had profound implications in our understanding of a variety of metabolic bone, kidney, and gastrointestinal diseases. Assays to measure the major cir culating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, were described 10 years ago. Assays for the other metabolites, in particular, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, were described even more recently. As of today, we know of many vitamin D metabolites and have developed the techniques to measure most of them; how ever, many questions remain concerning their physiological role.
