Book excerpt: The influence of exercise intensity while participating in a structured exercise program on a) energy expenditure outside of structured exercise (non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)), b) reported energy intake (REI), and c) cardiometabolic biomarkers have not been previously examined. This study aimed to: 1) examine how exercise intensity (continuous moderate-intensity exercise versus high-intensity interval training) influences compensatory responses (changes in NEAT and REI) to an exercise training program in overweight/obese college-age females, 2) explore whether compensatory changes in NEAT and EI explain inter-individual differences in cardiometabolic responses to moderate- and high-intensity exercise training, and 3) examine the effect of psychological constructs and view of exercise as commitment versus progress on compensatory changes in NEAT and EI. Overweight/obese college females were randomly assigned to continuous moderate-intensity cycling (MOD-C) or vigorous sprint-interval cycling (VIG-SIC) for 6 weeks of exercise training. Participants in the VIG-SIC group performed 5-7 repeated bouts of 30-second sprints at maximal effort, followed by 4 minutes of active recovery. Females in the MOD-C group completed 20-30 minutes of moderate intensity with duration matched to maintain equal energy expenditure between groups. NEAT was measured with the Actiheart physical activity monitor, REI via the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour Recall (ASA24), and cardiometabolic biomarkers were determined using standard clinical procedures. Exercise views were recorded immediately following exercise training sessions via the wrist-worn PRO-Diary monitor. No between or within group differences in NEAT were apparent on exercise or non-exercise days. Similarly, no between or within group differences were found in REI changes. When groups were combined, participants maintained NEAT (p=0.99) and decreased REI (p=0.01) throughout the study. Significant associations were found between NEAT responses and CRP and GLUC changes and while these associations were small in magnitude for GLUC, a 100 kcal/day in NEAT was associated with a 0.42 mg/dL decrease in CRP. Exercise views were not shown to be associated with compensatory responses, but higher self-control scores were associated with increased REI during the exercise training intervention. Future exercise training interventions should educate participants beginning a structured exercise program about potential adverse compensatory responses.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of acute exercise on food motivation, energy intake, and total physical activity in normal-weight and obese women. Participants of both groups were matched (except for Body Mass Index) and conditions (exercise vs. non-exercise) were randomized and counter-balanced. Eighteen normal-weight and 17 obese women completed an exercise and non-exercise day, each performed on the same day of the week. Exercise was performed on a motor-driven treadmill at 3.8 mph and 0% grade for 45 continuous minutes. To test for food motivation, participants were shown a continuous stream of pictures of food and flowers (control) while neural activity was monitored. Data were analyzed using a 2-group x 2-exercise condition x 2-picture type repeated measures analysis of covariance on event-related potential (ERP) amplitude and latency. Dietary records were analyzed using the Food Processor SQL nutrition software. Physical activity was monitored using a GT1M accelerometer. For both groups under both conditions, ERP amplitude was higher and latency was lower for food pictures compared to flower pictures. When normal-weight and obese women were combined, there was a significant condition*picture type interaction for late positive potential (P=0.04) with participants showing less neurological response to food pictures following a 45-minute exercise bout. Exercise did not alter energy intake. However, the exercise condition resulted in significantly more total physical activity, moderate intensity, vigorous intensity, moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) intensity activity, and less sedentary time than the non-exercise condition. There was a significant group*condition interaction for MVPA (P=0.043) with obese women showing less MVPA than the normal-weight group. The sample of women studied did not show neurological differences in response to pictures of food based upon BMI. However, exercise decreased neurological responses to food, which may indicate lower food motivation. A supervised and planned exercise bout dramatically increased total physical activity in normal-weight and obese women compared to a day without planned exercise. There may be some negative compensation for MVPA in obese women following a 45-minute exercise bout compared to normal-weight women.

Book excerpt: Physiological responses after maximal and submaximal exercise are routinely monitored in a plethora of diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, asthma, neuromuscular disorders), and normal populations (e.g. athletes, youth, elderly), while slower or irregular post-exercise recovery usually indicates poor health and/or low fitness level. Abnormal post-exercise recovery (as assessed via blunted post-exercise heart rate dynamics) helps to predict the presence and severity of coronary artery disease, while differences in recovery outcomes in athletes might discriminate between fit and unfit individuals. Disturbances in post-exercise recovery might be due to acute or persistent changes in: (1) adaptive responses mediated by the autonomic nervous system and vasodilator substances, (2) cellular bioenergetics, and/or (3) muscular plasticity. Preliminary evidence suggests possible role of time-dependent modulation of nitric oxide synthase and adenosine receptors during post-exercise recovery, yet no molecular attributes of post-exercise recovery are revealed so far. Currently several markers of post-exercise recovery are used (e.g. heart rate measures, hormone profiles, biochemical and hematological indices); however none of them meets all criteria to make its use generally accepted as the gold standard. In addition, recent studies suggest that different pharmacological agents and dietary interventions, or manipulative actions (e.g. massage, cold-water immersion, compression garments, athletic training) administered before, during or immediately after exercise could positively affect post-exercise recovery. There is a growing interest to provide more evidence-based data concerning the effectiveness and safety of traditional and novel interventions to affect post-exercise recovery. The goals of this research topic are to critically evaluate the current advances on mechanisms and clinical implications of post-exercise recovery, and to summarize recent experimental data from interventional studies. This knowledge may help to identify the hierarchy of key mechanisms, and recognize methods to monitor and improve post-exercise recovery in both health and disease.

Nutrient Composition of Rations for Short-Term, High-Intensity Combat Operations considers military performance, health concerns, food intake, energy expenditure, physical exercise, and food technology issues. The success of military operations depends to a large extent on the physical and mental status of the individuals involved. Appropriate nutrition during assault missions is a continuous challenge mainly due to diminished appetites of individuals under stress. Many less controllable and unpredictable factors, such as individual preferences and climate, come into play to reduce appetite. In fact, soldiers usually consume about half of the calories needed, leaving them in a state called "negative energy balance." The consequences of being in negative energy balance while under these circumstances range from weight loss to fatigue to mental impairments. An individual's physiological and nutritional status can markedly affect one's ability to maximize performance during missions and may compromise effectiveness. With the number of these missions increasing, the optimization of rations has become a high priority.
