Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique compilation on the use of leaching/extraction methods in different fields. The use of leaching test methods is increasing in various areas including: waste treatment and disposal; incineration of waste; soil clean-up and reuse of cleaned soil; sludge treatment. This has led to (and may increasingly lead to) the development of a large number of very similar tests in these different fields. However, these developments are taking place with no clear understanding of their mutual relationships. In view of these developments, efforts are needed to harmonize the leaching procedures that could be adapted for different matrices, as well as validate the use of existing tests in other fields. The development of a wide variety of leaching/extraction tests for different matrices is undesirable from a regulatory point of view and undesirable for industry. Clarity in testing is crucial in producer-consumer relations. This collective document will assist in improving the understanding of leaching from a variety of sources and will, where appropriate, help to bring together the approaches used in different technical fields and in different countries.

Book excerpt: Resource recovery and recycling from millions of tons of wastes produced from industrial activities is a continuing challenge for environmental engineers and researchers. Demand for conservation of resources, reduction in the quantity of waste and sustainable development with environmental control has been growing in every part of the world. Resource Recovery and Recycling from Metallurgical Wastes brings together the currently used techniques of waste processing and recycling, their applications with practical examples and economic potentials of the processes. Emphasis is on resource recovery by appropriate treatment and techniques. Material on the subject is scatterend in waste management and environmental related journals, conference volumes and government departmental technical reports. This work serves as a source book of information and as an educational technical reference for practicing scientists and engineers, as well as for students. Describes the currently used and potential techniques for the recovery of valuable resources from mineral and metallurgical wastes Discusses the applications to specific kinds of wastes with examples from current practices, as well as eht economics of the processes Presents recent and emerging technologies of potentials in metal recycling and by-product utilization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad and developing scope of ergonomics - the application of scientific knowledge to improve peoples' interaction with products, systems and environments - has been illustrated for over twenty years by the books that make up the Contemporary Ergonomics series. Presenting the proceedings of the Ergonomics Society's annual conference, the series embraces the wide range of topics. Individual papers provide insight into current practice, present new research findings and form an invaluable reference source. The volumes provide a fast track for the publication of suitable papers from international contributors. These are chosen on the basis of abstracts submitted to a selection panel in the autumn prior to the Ergonomics Society's annual conference held in the spring. A wide range of topics are covered in these proceedings, including: applications of ergonomics, air traffic control, cognitive ergonomics, defence, design, environmental ergonomics, ergonomics4schools, hospital ergonomics, inclusive design, methods and tools, occupational health and safety, slips, trips & falls and transport. As well as being of interest to mainstream ergonomists and human factors specialists, Contemporary Ergonomics will appeal to all those who are concerned with people's interactions with their working and leisure environment including designers, manufacturing and production engineers, health and safety specialists, occupational, applied and industrial psychologists, and applied physiologists.

Book excerpt: The concept of Sustainable Development, implicating the protection of soil and groundwater, the limitation of waste production and the re-use of soild waste materials is still the leading theme of WASCON '94. Although it is clearly recognized in most countries that products derived from solid waste materials can be applied as construction materials, research is still needed to assess various environmental problems.

Book excerpt: The analysis of soils and sediments for pollutants is increasingly required in today's industrial world. It is therefore important that extraction procedures used for environmental risk assessment studies, production of certified reference materials and applications of extraction schemes are standardised throughout the scientific community. This book deals specifically with operationally-defined extraction methods for the determination of "fractions" of elements in soil and sediment matrices. Bringing together the work of a number of different international laboratories, the book describes single and sequential extraction procedures. It then goes on to present a summary of the latest research on extraction/leaching tests for the determination of trace organic compounds in wastes, followed by an outline of an international network which aims to standardise extraction and leaching methodologies for their applications to various environmental matrices. Methodologies for Soil and Sediment Fractionation Studies will be welcomed by researchers and analysts in academia, industry and government institutions worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique source of reference on the chemical analysis of potentially contaminated land. It assists in specifying appropriate analyses, relevant strategies for carrying out analyses, and methods of interpreting results within the new risk-based legislative framework for contaminated land. It addresses all aspects of the analysis, from delivery of the samples to the laboratory to the presentation of the results to the clients. Emphasis is placed on concentrated, tabular data, wherever possible. Problems of analysis are highlighted and solutions are proposed. Asbestos is covered in detail in the chapter on inorganic parameters, and a chapter is included on the new techniques of ecotoxicity measurement. Directed equally at the analytical chemist and the environmental scientist or engineer responsible for commissioning analyses of potentially contaminated soil or water samples, the book is written in a way that will prove helpful to both new and experienced practitioners. As such, it is one of the first volumes to bridge the gap between the customer and the supplier.

Book excerpt: Concrete and cement-based materials must operate in increasingly aggressive aqueous environments, which may be either natural or industrial. These materials may suffer degradation in which ion addition and/or ion exchange reactions occur, leading to a breakdown of the matrix microstructure and consequent weakening. Sometimes this degradation can be extremely rapid and serious such as in acidic environments, while in other cases degradation occurs over long periods. Consequences of material failure are usually severe – adversely affecting the health and well-being of human communities and disturbing ecological balances. There are also large direct costs of maintaining and replacing deteriorated infrastructure and indirect costs from loss of production during maintenance work, which place a great burden on society. The focus of this book is on addressing issues concerning performance of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments , by way of this State-of-the-Art Report. The book represents the work of many well-known and respected authors who contributed chapters or parts of chapters. Four main themes were addressed: I. Nature and kinetics of degradation and deterioration mechanisms of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments, II. Modelling of deterioration in such environments, III. Test methods to assess performance of cement-based materials in such environments, and which can be used to characterise and rate relative performance and inform long term predictions, IV. Engineering implications and consequences of deterioration in aggressive aqueous environments, and engineering approaches to the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste Materials in Construction contains papers from the first international conference on the environmental implications of construction with waste materials held in Maastricht in November, 1991. The three key themes of the conference are technical options for the application of waste materials in products for the construction industry, the resulting chemical and environmental aspects thereof, and legislation policies as they pertain to waste management. There has been a great deal of laboratory testing carried out in several countries on the impact of waste-derived products on the environment since most of these products are used in close contact with the soil ( eg. road construction). There is however, no consensus as to the methodologies possible for assessing the environmental behaviour of waste residue and the consequences of using them nor for developing standards to ensure environmentally safe re-use. The first half of the conference addresses this problem of lack of consensus. The second half deals with technical solutions and procedures to use waste materials for the production of construction materials.
