Book Synopsis The Dynamics of the Computer Industry: Modeling the Supply of Workstations and their Components by : Walid Rachid Touma
Download or read book The Dynamics of the Computer Industry: Modeling the Supply of Workstations and their Components written by Walid Rachid Touma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers communicate globally via satellite or fiber optic links, wide area networks share resources thousands of miles away, and the average home can have the capacity of access information at the push of a button - the digital information age has arrived! Several technologies have made this computer age possible, helped it grow, and affected its dynamics over time. This book addresses the problem of formulating a model that interrelates the factors that drive the supply of these technologies over time to the attributes of the computers that are manufactured from them.
Book Synopsis Image and Video Compression Standards by : Vasudev Bhaskaran
Download or read book Image and Video Compression Standards written by Vasudev Bhaskaran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image and Video Compression Standards: Algorithms and Architectures presents an introduction to the algorithms and architectures that underpin the image and video compression standards, including JPEG (compression of still images), H.261 (video teleconferencing), MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (video storage and broadcasting). In addition, the book covers the MPEG and Dolby AC-3 audio encoding standards, as well as emerging techniques for image and video compression, such as those based on wavelets and vector quantization. The book emphasizes the foundations of these standards, i.e. techniques such as predictive coding, transform-based coding, motion compensation, and entropy coding, as well as how they are applied in the standards. How each standard is implemented is not dealt with, but the book does provide all the material necessary to understand the workings of each of the compression standards, including information that can be used to evaluate the efficiency of various software and hardware implementations conforming to the standards. Particular emphasis is placed on those algorithms and architectures that have been found to be useful in practical software or hardware implementations. Audience: A valuable reference for the graduate student, researcher or engineer. May also be used as a text for a course on the subject.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basic statistical and analytical techniques of computer intrusion detection. It is the first to present a data-centered approach to these problems. It begins with a description of the basics of TCP/IP, followed by chapters dealing with network traffic analysis, network monitoring for intrusion detection, host based intrusion detection, and computer viruses and other malicious code.
Book Synopsis Software Visualisation by : Peter Eades
Download or read book Software Visualisation written by Peter Eades and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-11-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “software visualisation” refers to the graphical display of characteristics and behaviour of all aspects of software: design and analysis methods, systems, programs and algorithms. The purpose of this book is to collect and compare different experiences of software visualisation both from fundamental and applied viewpoints. The book is divided into four parts, covering important aspects of software visualisation. Part 1 covers a survey on existing software visualisation tools and environments, the strategies for making a software visualisation system language independent, and program animation for C language. Part 2 presents topics and techniques on graph drawing, which supports efficient and aesthetically pleasing visualisation. Some recently developed graph drawing systems and techniques used are described. Part 3 discusses visual programming concepts and techniques for supporting parallel and heterogeneous distributed programming. Part 4 includes several case studies of software visualisation, concentrating on the broader field of software engineering ranging from software metrics to reverse engineering.
Book Synopsis Parallel Programming Using C++ by : Gregory V. Wilson
Download or read book Parallel Programming Using C++ written by Gregory V. Wilson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996-07-08 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Bjarne Stroustrup Software is generally acknowledged to be the single greatest obstacle preventing mainstream adoption of massively-parallel computing. While sequential applications are routinely ported to platforms ranging from PCs to mainframes, most parallel programs only ever run on one type of machine. One reason for this is that most parallel programming systems have failed to insulate their users from the architectures of the machines on which they have run. Those that have been platform-independent have usually also had poor performance. Many researchers now believe that object-oriented languages may offer a solution. By hiding the architecture-specific constructs required for high performance inside platform-independent abstractions, parallel object-oriented programming systems may be able to combine the speed of massively-parallel computing with the comfort of sequential programming. Parallel Programming Using C++ describes fifteen parallel programming systems based on C++, the most popular object-oriented language of today. These systems cover the whole spectrum of parallel programming paradigms, from data parallelism through dataflow and distributed shared memory to message-passing control parallelism. For the parallel programming community, a common parallel application is discussed in each chapter, as part of the description of the system itself. By comparing the implementations of the polygon overlay problem in each system, the reader can get a better sense of their expressiveness and functionality for a common problem. For the systems community, the chapters contain a discussion of the implementation of the various compilers and runtime systems. In addition to discussing the performance of polygon overlay, several of the contributors also discuss the performance of other, more substantial, applications. For the research community, the contributors discuss the motivations for and philosophy of their systems. As well, many of the chapters include critiques that complete the research arc by pointing out possible future research directions. Finally, for the object-oriented community, there are many examples of how encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism can be used to control the complexity of developing, debugging, and tuning parallel software.
